tOfficial Red Wings offseason thread

I'm not "jumping to conclusions" about whether or not there will be amnesty rules. The CBA is up, the NHL wants the cap down, and the players don't. Last time around, the players took a serious haircut; it's possible that something along the same lines happens. Do I promise it? Of course not.

Speaking of "jumping to conclusions," did you really just say that we offered Semin $7M a year but he went to Carolina for the same term instead?

Ooops, my bad. Didn't realize I was taking RockyWeakSauce seriously. Ignore it is. Ta!

No I said "offer 7 mil" as in he was offered 7 mil and went to Carolina. The landscape has totally changed now. People act like Ken Holland is going to get a call while pumping gas that _____ wants to play for the Wings. It's not like it was 4-5 years ago.

Omg 4 years without a cup!! Better start blowing money a wrecklessly as possible to appease mike Valenti and the other amateurs that can't see two feet in front of their face.

Some of you turds really wanted Semin? It seemed alluring at first but with time to think it over, I was hoping he'd stay away.

It's stupid to write off the wings. Our offense has improved overall and while we won't be shutting everybody out, i really doubt the D is going to be as much of a tire fire as some believe.

I can roll with the D as is, but what happens when, inevitably, a D-man misses extended time due to injury or even worse the 70-80% likelihood that at some point we'll be missing at least 2. Who are the next names up? I honestly have no clue, but odds are they're not NHL caliber. That's why I think it sucks so bad. At this point I want him to acquire somebody, anybody, who can play D in the NHL to add some depth.

I disagree that we've gotten any better outside of Gustavsson. We added two 3/4 line forwards (of which we have about 10) and on D we lost 2 bodies and added 0. I'm not writing off the wings, I don't think the playoff streak ends, but we're not Stanley cup caliber and I haven't seen anything to suggest we have the type of goalie then can carry a middle of the road team to a cup. We'll most likely be fighting for a bottom half playoff spot and go out in the first or second round, which isn't terrible, but I would have thought most wings fans would hold this team to a higher standard.

What exactly is "Stanley cup caliber" anymore though? An 8-seed just won it all.

An eighth seed that had just traded for a 30 goal scorer and finally stopped underachieving. It wasn't the typical eight seed to say the least.

That's what I was referencing when I said we didn't have the type of goalie (i.e. Quick) that could carry us to a cup. Basically I'm just saying we're no better today, probably worse, then the team that has failed to get by the second round the last 3 years.

I forgot guys, we didn't have enough cap space. This clusterfuck of an offseason all makes sense now.

And I've said I would not have done that deal. Fire holland!!! We haven't won a cup in 4 years and he made a trade you didn't like!!

Disagree; I think there is still a HUGE majority of players that when push came to shove, they would rather play for the Wings then anyone else because of the way the organization is run. Is that still a negotiating ploy when you can't pay as much as another franchise? Abso-fucking lutely.

  • Is there an award for the team with the most cap space?

Semin should have been signed. Extra capspace is for Nashville. 7 million? what are the Wings going to do with that 7 million in space. Absolutely nothing.

One Eastern Conference club reportedly has a four-year, $30 million offer on the table. The Red Wings were hoping to sign him for three years at between $4.5 million and $5 million.

i wanted nothing to do with semin. if doan is asking for too much, i want nothing to do with him either. i dont need holland blowing his load of money on locker room cancers and overpriced 35 year olds just cuz he has the money in his wallet. KH is going to make sound decisions to keep the team competitive every year. its still a playoff team, and there is still an opportunity to do something this upcoming season at the trade deadline if wings are in position to make a deeper run than expected.

How I feel too. Never saw the grand appeal for Doan when he was 30, so why would I want him at 35? He's a goon, a cheap shot artist and what has he ever really done that was significant? Semin is not worth one year and there are seven million reasons why.

  • I'm kind of annoyed with this offseason but not completely. You can't just throw money at anyone just because u think you have to make a move. Next years UFA list is much stronger than this years. Also, with the way the cap is looking, many teams may have to part ways with their talent starting next spring. This season may end the playoff streak but I think the wings are in prime position for the following year and years after.

Come the trade deadline next year the Wings will have an awful lot of money to bring in rentals.

  • Agreed. Carolina just paid $7 million for a loafer who scored 21 goals last year. If he was so wonderful, how come Washington wanted nothing to do with bringing him back, and that's with another Russian Ovechkin as their captain.
Teams are desperate right now and are entering into some horrible contracts. I can't blame the Wings for not trying to outstupid other far more desperate teams. It's time to see what some of these younger players can do.

Just like last trade deadline where they had around 6 mil to spend. That worked out very well.

I've seen flashes of it from Howard - 2010 when he carried the injured Wings to a playoff spot as a rookie, and the first half of last year before he broke his finger (had 32 wins and a 2.03 GAA when it happened). Hopefully he can put it all together this season.

True, but let's be honest.- you wouldn't be saying they were "Stanley cup caliber" if they had lost to Vancouver, even in 7 games. I'm still not convinced NJ was either! But I guess that's the reality of the NHL playoffs, especially as we get further into the lockout era.

does it matter what he gets? Are you paying the bill? Will ticket prices at the joe go down? Will the extra cap space be used.

    no, no, no, no.

Can he help the team in a top 6 role.

    Yes.

Cant wait to see Bert and Cleary on Datsyuk and Zetterbergs wing.
