  • Hit Vail again on Saturday. Shitty drive up (2.5 hours) but it was actually pretty good snow. They reported 2" and 7" the day before, and we hit a couple of the back bowls and found a few fresh tracks and then good snow most of the day. Wanted to leave by 1ish to beat traffic but decided the snow was finally good for once and stayed a little longer. Made it home in 2 hours including stopping at Qdoba. Queso Steak burrito.

I had been meaning to post this photo. It was from Superbowl weekend, my buddy from MI (Spartan) and I were at Breck and we decided to take the singles line to get up to the top faster. He sat down and was riding the lift up with some random people or whatever, looks over and sees this (pic) on the chair. He said he wanted to take a picture but then said "nah, I'll get it next time" but then stopped and thought "what are the chances I'll get this exact same chair, ever again". Cool story, bro? Anyway, thought it was a pretty cool, completely random occurrence.

Edit: The photo will not post for some reason, link here: http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n409/whitesnakeMSU/100MEDIA36IMAG0047.jpg

    Dude that looks exhausting.

The hiking was exhausting. Silverton has one lift that takes you to the top of a massive ridge. The hikes are 10-45min depending on what you want to ride. We rode both Saturday and Sunday and made 4-5 of the longer hikes. To put it in perspective, we made 8 runs all weekend and we ate our lunch on the lift. Worth it though...terrain was absolutely sick.

I live in CO and have a condo in Copper and have skiied them all many, many times.

I am not a fan of Breck. It is a very difficult mountan to get around and most of the runs funnel everyone in valley runs that get very crowded. I haven't skiied there in 10 years because thier are just a lot better options.

Copper is voted by the residents of Summit county as their favorite place to ski year in and year out. It is by far the best mountan in Summit. I also really like Beaver Creek and Vail in Eagle county but bring your Visa because everything is very expensive.

Keystone is pretty good, and Arapahoe basin is very different with beautifull scenery but is small.

For resorts close to Denver I would rank them as follows:

Vail Copper Beaver Creek Winter Park Keystone Arapahoe Basin Breck Loveland

Of course all of them are awesome compared to anything east of the Rockies

I'm a little more keen on Loveland, and much less so on Copper. But then again, I like steeper stuff.

Vail, Beaver Creek, Loveland, Breck, A-Basin, Copper, Winter Park, Keystone

  • Massive Avalanche Takes Out French Ski Lift -- With Skiers On It

No one was reported hurt, so you can relax and watch these crazy videos of a ginormous, late-afternoon, wet avalanche at St. Francois-Longchamps, France, in the Savoie, destroying a quad chairlift. Some 70 people were on the lift and, incredibly, not one was injured and all were evacuated within two and a half hours. ..

I agree with most of what you said. I haven't been to winter park though ans have heard it is more of a skiers mountain with moguls everywhere.

Breck has good stuff if you know where to go, but you're right that it funnels into one area and gets very crowded. Cat walks are a bitch too. If im not mistaken, Breck is the busiest resort in NA and possibly the world. TONS of people.

So ... how about you let me rent your condo when you aren't using it? Spartan discount? I work M-F and usually only go up on the weekends and it sucks to drive 1.5 hours, ride for 4, then leave early to beat the traffic.

For an intermediate boarder Breck is fun I think. I just go over to 7 and stay over there. Less people, longer runs. I think part of the allure with Breck is also the party atmosphere in the bars at each base and the town is a pretty good time.

  • Did Brighton and Snowbird so far. Spring skiing conditions. Windy and snow expected today. Going to The Canyons this morning and hitting the fresh snow expected overnight at Alta tomorrow.
Anyone here been to Powder Mountain? Giving that a thought Thursday or Friday.

  • Home from Utah. Skied 7 straight days, the kids did 8. Did go to Powder Mountain twice and loved it. They got 4-7" of snow and nobody else got anything appreciable. Loved the terrain. Reminded me of Snowbasin before it was bought out by Sun Valley.

After the first day there the van mysteriously stops running on the way home and we get stranded near Huntsville. (I'll blame the solar flares.) Had to have it towed to Ogden and still had to get back to Park City that night. Fortunately they were able to fix it the following day and we left Saturday after skiing the Canyons without any issues. It was warm and the end of the week and downright hot at the Canyons. The place was a slush field before we left. Demoed some fat skies the last 2 days and I'm sold on them. Will have a new pair before I ski again.

Anyone doing Krazy Daze this weekend?

  • Bump.

Driving home from work today (heading west) and noticed that Mt Evans and all of the taller peaks are completely white, when they weren't just days ago. I actually went camping this past weekend at 11,300' (Loch Lomond near St. Mary's), which I bet saw some snow too (There was snow at A-basin in the 10,500 area).

I am jacked for snow season.

  • Bump again. First day at a-basin yesterday. Only 2 runs open and 15-20 minute lift line waits, but felt good to get out for the first time.

  • Bump again. 4th day of the season today. First 3 were at A-bay, today was at Keystone. Decent snow for being mostly man made, sun came out and softened things up, then around 2pm things got crusty.

21k vertical today (season pass includes RFID chip and each lift has a reader so they calculate your vertical based on what lifts you hit).

  • Rode Vail yesterday. They've gotten a foot over the last 3 days and are expecting almost 2 more feet by Wednesday.

Found fresh tracks in the trees all day yesterday, at least 2 feet deep.

  • Finalized all of my bookings a couple of weeks ago. Going to be in Park City last weekend in January. Never skied Utah before (been all over CO and been to Jackson Hole). Pretty excited about it.

  • Headed to SLC a week from today. Plan to ski Alta, Snowbird and Solitude. Both Alta and Snowbird have had over 29" in the past few days with more to come. Shouldn't have to worry about any core shots this year and ski anywhere with all the snow they have been getting. Last year at this time it was tough skiing off piste compared to 2010. Have never been to Powder Mountain but would like to make it over there on this trip.

On a limited schedule I would ski the following areas in order of importance :
    Alta
    did I mention Alta?
    Powder Mountain
    The Canyons
    Snowbasin
Snowbird (you can do a combined ticket with Alta)
    Park City
    Solitude
    Deer Valley
    Brighton

Watch the ski reports carefully. Even though most of the resorts are relatively close to one another as the crow flies it's not unusual that one resort gets a foot of fresh powder and the one 5 miles away only gets a few inches. This happened to us at Solitude and Brighton several times.
They are all great resorts, you'll have fun at any of them.

I was up there Wed-Sun & it was great. Part of Game Creek was open and as you know, Northwoods. It has to be great pow today as it was dumping big when I quit at noon yesterday to get CME to Eagle.

What are you riding this year? I just switched to the Blizzard 8.5 ti and they are super versatile.

BTW, one of the best if not the THE best online retailers anywhere is the old Keego Harbor, MI shop (can't remember the name) that has incredible inventory and prices: That's where I got the Blizzards.

Dude that ski is awesome. Blizzard is making some baller sticks right now. The bonafide and cochise are badass for western skis.

Got a pair of Kastle MX88s after demoing them last year. Couldn't decide between that and a blizzard ski though.

Yeah, they have that slight double rocker and are really lightweight but good at speed. Had Volkl AC50s that were also stable but much heavier & harder to handle. My cousin has the Bushwackers (no metal) that are 88mm waist like your Kastles and a lot of fun. I tried them but I think yours are probably better all-around with metal. Too bad brands like Kastle and Blizzard are kind of hard to find in a lot of retail shops. Can't go wrong with Austrian skis/ /biggrin
