Vail has gotten about 4 feet in the last 2 weeks. Everything still isn't open yet, but there are still good spots to be found. This is from Sunday, they had reported 4" that morning but we found some decently deep spots. First time making an edit. 6th day of the season, 1st day at Vail (3 A-basin, 2 Keystone).

That's the longest snowboard video I've ever watched......

Ya I ski intuition liners. Warmer stiffer and lighter than a stock liner. They're made of a closed cell foam which is better than open cell foam in stock liners.

Ultimately nothing is better than a properly fit boot with a good shell fit. But intuition liners can take up volume if you're running into shin bang or other slop issues as well.

My issue is with the bottom of my feet. I get pressure points on the nerves on the balls of my feet (metatarsalgia) that becomes extremely painful if I don't take my boots off once or twice during the day. More than once I've had to tear a boot off in the middle of a run I've been in so much pain. I've had just about every shop in Colorado and Utah work on them. I've done the Superfeet insoles. I'm thinking about trying the Intuition Liner as a next step.
I'll get fitted in Big Sky when we get out there and see if it works out. They are cheaper than buying another pair of boots again.

My son and some of his friends on a trip to Park City & Brighton, Utah last year. (Skip to the 3 minute mark to actually watch some snowboarding.)

While I certainly appreciate better booze options, I'm taking the family out. Is Colorado more of a spring break party?

    What about the actual hills?

If this is your first time out with the family or if they are very young I would actually recommend Colorado first. Overall their resorts are probably a little more kid friendly than Utah and the ski schools at Vail and Breckenridge are world class. There is probably a little more to do off the slopes in Colorado than in Utah depending on where you are staying. Having driven to both places more than I care to count we could leave Detroit about 4pm and be in Breckenridge before noon MST. If the kids are little that extra 5 hours can make a huge difference.

Ed I've had similar problems and I'm 35. You go to Utah a lot. Go see Brent Amsbury. He's a licensed CPED and he owns park city boot fitters. Designed me a solid insert, adjusted my existing liner, worked with the chanting on the boots, etc. set me up with the right size shell without trying to sell me anything. Basically, searched through catalogues, picked a few good boots for my foot shape and told me to get em' on them online and bring em' back. I've also got a decent warmup routine to condition them when your out there.

Thanks. I'll be in Park City the 1st week of March. I'm going to try out these liners when I'm in Big Sky and if no improvement I'll definitely go a see him.

Wow you must drive 120 mph and have a deal with the weather gods! It's taken me nearly 3 hours just to go from Denver to Breck some days because of weather or tunnel delays when they meter traffic and hold cars for 20 min at a time.

We have always lucked out getting through the pass but we also never had to do it on a weekend. We have had more issues with I-80 closed to wind and weather than problems outside Denver. When we get rolling we only stop for gas and bathroom breaks and have breakfast at some choke-and-puke in Nebraska. Once took us 30 hours to get to Steamboat.

I don't know what to make of this.... are you saying it was too long? Or decent enough to continue watching that long coming from a skier? Or Vail sucks and Aspen rules?

  • Looking to get a new board... Haven't bought a new one in about 10 years.. currently have a 153cm.. It was nice for doing spins and stuff but now Im more into speed and getting air and what not.. Looking at the Burton Barracuda but trying to decide between the 161 and the 165... I am 5'10" and weigh in around 215. What would you experts out there recommend? A couple of my buddies seem to think 165 is too big, but every site I have checked out has told me 160+ is good. Thanks

  • Skier since I was 5, I generally try to avoid going to CO skiing. The few times I've been to CO mainly Vail, Summit County it's always crazy long lift lines. Favortie places to ski are Kirkwood, CA, Fernie, BC, and Alta, UT.

    +1 for the pic.

make sure you try some reverse camber boards. IMO they are much more playful and fun.

Headed to Steamboat in Feb. My fav of the CO places.

Suppose to go to Bohemia over MLK weekend, but the place is still not open. Kind of concerning.

They should hopefully have snow by then. Do you follow the website? One of the lifts busted a gear and it's currently being replaced. I think it's supposed to be repaired by then. They realistically need about 3' of snow before they can open since they don't make snow, don't groom and so much of the resort is glade skiing.
Where are you staying up there? Roughing it in a yurt? lol

We'll be up mid-February. The owners - Lonnie and Lindsay are really nice. Really enjoyed the opening of the bar last season. biggrin

  • I'm heading out to Vail February 8-10. Does anybody have any recommendations on where to stay and also any way to get cheap/discounted lift tickets. My buddy found the Holiday Inn on 70 there at a discounted rate of $200/night which seems reasonable compared to some other places that popped up.

I've never been so any advice/insight would be appreciated. TIA.

No yurt. Just going to stay in Houghton to have something to do at night.

Web site had said they would open Jan 9, then 12, now it says they dont know when it will open. Not much snow in MI this year so far.

Lift should be up and running by now.

When you get to Vail, keep driving. Stop when you get to Glenwood Springs. Find a cheaper room and stay there. Then, you can drive up the valley and ski one of four great mountains where you will never stand in even a single lift line.

Otherwise, ski Vail along with 20,000 other folks driving up from Denver every morning.

went to a nearby ski mountain and was introduced by a friend to skiing and I think I'm hooked. I was riding the blues after my 3rd run. Not flying down the hill - just focused on turning and not crashing. had a lot of fun. and the mountain is nearby so the lift ticket is dirt cheap during the weekdays and had the mountain to ourselves - looks like I have a new winter activity!

Question for the veterans - I'd like to get some equipment. just beginner stuff. any recommendations? best time to buy? favorite brands? I think I'll do a seasonal rental because I'm sure I'll make up the value vs. renting at the mountain, but would be nice to have gear to call my own. TIA

Also - ski sizes. I remember that they gave me a 156. but most online sizing has me around 170. I liked the 156. I no I are Noob... but just wondering what the RCMB Ski Collective thinks. is it okay to stay shorter or should I be manning-up to a larger ski? Tanks

  • Switched from Steamboat to Vail, Ill be there Feb 6-10 as well. We blew our wad on a condo in the village. Bringing the wives who don't ski much and we were forced to stay in a nice place rather than some cheap ass hotel or so-so condo. Have not been to Vail since I was in college, it was crazy busy then so I'm expecting the same. What also sucks is the wives only ski the blues, so looks like I'll be in line more that actually skiing. Oh well.

Mt. Bohemia finally opens this friday in the UP. Anyone going up anytime this year? I need to pick a new weekend since it has been closed.

Well, I'm a snowboarder but the best time to buy is usually around the spring. Figure out what you want and keep an eye out for deals online. Or you could start off with some used gear, it would still probably be better than the rental stuff. Check craigslist or any second hand sporting goods stores.
