Bears | Kellen Davis looks for increase in production Thu Jun 7, 01:46 AM

Chicago Bears TE Kellen Davis is looking for a dramatic increase in production under new offensive coordinator Mike Tice. 'I'd like to have between 40-60 catches at least,' Davis said. 'I'm hoping to get out there and put some numbers up.'

Our view: Former OC Mike Martz didn't use the TE position much, but new OC Mike Tice should have a more TE-friendly system. We expect the Bears to have a high powered passing game, and Davis should post better numbers than he did last year. However, we don't think he'll be much of a fantasy factor in 2012. Davis is going undrafted in standard 12-team leagues.

Bears | Two WRs expected to compete for one roster spot Wed Jun 6, 03:29 PM

Chicago Bears WRs Dane Sanzenbacher and Devin Thomas are expected to compete for one roster spot during training camp because the team is not expected to have seven receivers on their final roster.

Our view: Thomas was a second-round pick by the Redskins back in 2008 but has failed to play up to his potential as a pro. We like Sanzenbacker in this competition because he's got strong hands and is not afraid to run routes over the middle.

Packers | Jerel Worthy might help pass-rush immediately Sun Jun 17, 08:58 PM

Green Bay Packers DL Jerel Worthy showed some flashes of pass-rush quickness, and the early signs suggest he might help the rush immediately.

Our view: Worthy has good functional strength and understands leverage when fighting through blocks. His first step is decent but it's his relentless motor that helps him push the pocket.

exans | Several receivers battling for roster spot Sun Jun 3, 12:03 AM

Houston Texans WRs Keshawn Martin and DeVier Posey, two undrafted free agents, are among several receivers battling for roster spots. WRs Trindon Holliday, Juaquin Iglesias, Jerrell Jackson, Mario Louis and Jeff Maehl are also in the mix, and the team is expected to sign a couple more veteran receivers to compete. 'I like this group,' head coach Gary Kubiak said. 'I like their ability. They've come a long way (in six OTAs).'

Our view: We think Martin and Posey win roster spots this year. Holliday may also be able to win a spot with the team because he's versatile. He's built like Darren Sproles and can be used effectively as a change of pace RB, slot WR, or return man.

Jets | Five players sit out practice Wednesday Wed Jun 13, 11:17 AM

New York Jets TE Brian Linthicum (quadriceps), WR Patrick Turner (hamstring), WR Jordan White (foot), DE Marcus Dixon (calf) and FS LaRon Landry (Achilles') did not practice Wednesday, June 13.

Trenton Robinson seeing time with starters Mon Jun 4, 01:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers FS Trenton Robinson has been seeing time with the first-team defense during organized team activities because franchise free-agent SS Dashon Goldson and FS Donte Whitner have skipped some of the workouts this offseason.

Redskins | No QB competition Tue Jun 5, 08:30 AM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III said there will be no quarterback competition between himself and QB Kirk Cousins. 'With Kirk, it's fine. They brought me in for a reason,' Griffin said. 'We all know they brought me in to be the starter, and I plan to be the starter, and they brought him in for a reason as well. He knows that. And it's not a competition. Let's just go ahead and say that. But we're cool ... We work out together, we were roommates for rookie minicamp, so there's no conflict there.'

Our view: Many people wrongly assumed the Redskins were hedging their bets when the selected Cousins in the fourth-round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Griffin has superstar potential and could flourish in the Shanahan system. Cousins is more of a backup caliber QB who reminds many in the scouting community of the Seahawks Matt Flynn. The Redskins were wise to select Cousins so they could develop him and perhaps trade him at a later date. Make no mistake about it, Griffin III is the real deal.

  • Chargers | Edwin Baker, Le'Ron McClain in mix for carries Tue Jun 26, 10:11 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the unquestioned starting tailback, but it gets murky after that on the depth chart. RB Ronnie Brown is viewed as being at the tail end of his career. Brown will try to hold off RB Curtis Brinkley for the primary backup role behind Mathews. RB Edwin Baker and FB Le'Ron McClain will also be in the mix for carries.

Our view: McClain had nearly 1,000-yards rushing for the Ravens in 2008, but hasn't been asked to carry the rock in recent years. Baker has good lower body strength, elite quickness, and good initial burst. However, he lacks top end speed and is nothing more than a change of pace back in our eyes.

  • The San Francisco Chronicle believes undrafted 49ers rookie TE Garrett Celek has the talent to make a 53-man roster.

Garrett is the brother of Eagles TE Brent Celek. Reporter Kevin Lynch puts Celek's chances of cracking the 49ers' crowded tight end corps at 20-to-1, but believes a strong preseason could turn him into a possible waiver claim. Per Lynch, Celek "catches the ball so softly, you hardly ever hear the ball hit his hands," and also "seems to know his way around a pass route."

  • Jets waived/injured TE Brian Linthicum.

Undrafted out of Michigan State, Linthicum's bid to make the Jets' roster took a severe blow when he came down with a quadriceps injury prior to last month's minicamp.

  • Titans | Javon Ringer wants starting opportunity Thu Jul 5, 12:04 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Javon Ringer is looking for an opportunity to become a starting running back in the NFL. With one more year on his rookie contract, Ringer is already thinking about the options he might have to become a starter somewhere else. 'Sooner or later, I hope to get a legitimate chance to prove myself,' Ringer said. 'This is my contract year, so I'm hoping and praying for the best.'

Our view: Ringer has flashed some ability as a rusher during his pro career, but last season he was a disappointment. Averaging only 3.1 YPC he managed a mere 59 carries during a year when starter Chris Johnson struggled. He's unlikely to get much opportunity this year unless Johnson gets hurt. If that happens we feel second-year RB Jamie Harper may be the Titans back to own instead of Ringer.

Packers | Jerel Worthy saw time with starters Thu Jul 5, 01:49 PM

Green Bay Packers DL Jerel Worthy said he saw a lot of time with the starting defense during offseason workouts. Worthy said the defensive coaches said they plan to have Worthy to play with the starting defense often this season.

Our view: No surprise here. Worthy has great functional strength and his best attribute is his ability to shed blockers. He's got violent, strong hands, understands leverage and can rush the passer from the middle of the D-Line.

Ex-Spartans Javon Ringer, Jerel Worthy talk about life in NFL | Michigan State Spartans | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Despite playing a limited role in his three seasons with the Tennessee Titans, former Michigan State running back Javon Ringer says he feels blessed to have made it to the NFL. However, it's clear he wants to contribute more than he has.

  • The Bengals believe Kyle Cook is quietly becoming a top center.

A former undrafted free agent, Cook took over as a starter full-time in 2009 and signed a four-year, $14 million extension last offseason. While Cook doesn't get a ton of play nationally, Pro Football Focus rated him as an above-average run blocker for the third straight season. He'll look to stabilize the Bengals' offensive line between first-round RG Kevin Zeitler and new LG Travelle Wharton.

  • Texans | Keshawn Martin may be favorite for No. 3 WR job Sun Jul 15, 02:48 PM

Houston Texans WR Keshawn Martin may enter training camp as the favorite for the No. 3 wide receiver job. The team will use camp to determine Martin's role in the offense.

Our view: Martin is a talented rookie who is effective on underneath routes because of his run after the catch ability. We like Lestar Jean as the favorite to win the WR3 job in Houston. In fact, Jean has the ability to be a quality starter opposite Andre Johnson if he gets the opportunity. He's a big WR who consistently plucks passes out of the air.

Jean was the one player from FAU that was decent in 2010. Kind of funny to see him and K-mart competing for PT in the pros.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

  • Not looking good for B.J. in Miami:

If Ochocinco and Naanee stick, that leaves one or two spots for Roberto Wallace (most impressive of the unproven ones), Marlon Moore (good speed but some exasperating drops), Clyde Gates (still thinking too much), Julius Pruitt (three touchdowns in one June practice), and long shots Chris Hogan (the second-year kid from Monmouth who was decent in May/June work), B.J. Cunningham (too many drops), Rishard Matthews (will get a look on returns) and Jeff Fuller (practice squad potential).

Me neither. He had a problem his freshman year, but improved in that area substantially his sophomore year, and never really had a problem after that. Wonder if it's a function of the different playbook, and different QB's throwing to him.

Still -- hope he at least hits the practice squad somewhere.

  • Sixth-round WR B.J. Cunningham suffered from "too many drops" in offseason practices, according to the Miami Herald.

A previous report suggested Cunningham's drops occurred in rookie minicamp before he improved measurably in OTAs. After Brian Hartline and Davone Bess, the Herald believes Chad Ochocinco and Legedu Naanee are the favorites for the third and fourth roster spots, though the latter can't afford a letdown in camp. Roberto Wallace is the "most impressive" of the unproven entities vying for the fifth spot. Seventh-rounder Rishard Matthews will get a look on returns. Clyde Gates is "still thinking too much."

  • Greg Jones - LB - Giants

The Giants have moved second-year LB Greg Jones from middle to outside linebacker.
Jones failed in an early-season audition at middle linebacker last year, finishing out his rookie season as a reserve and special teamer. A 2011 sixth-round pick out of Michigan State, Jones is battling for a roster spot in 2012.

He's a natural WILL that played MIKE because MSU didn't have anyone else that could handle the position. This isn't surprising.

that is the absolute last thing I expected to hear about BJ. brings to mine grabs like the 2 point conversion vs. Purdue in 2010, the juggling TD vs. Northwestern, and many many more. if anything he seemed to have the strongest hands we've had in a long time. I assumed "speed" would be the main critique. weird.

  • Packers | Two suspended DLs won't get many snaps during camp Sat Jul 28, 02:31 PM

Green Bay Packers DLs Mike Neal and Anthony Hargrove will not get many snaps in team drills during training camp because both will be serving suspensions to begin the regular season. Neal has been suspended for the first four games and Hargrove will miss the first eight.

Our view: No surprise here. The Packers need the young guys on the depth chart, like rookie Jerel Worthy, to get experience and reps in training camp.

Chargers | Trio of RBs have added company Sat Jul 21, 12:05 AM

The San Diego Chargers signed RB Jackie Battle Friday, July 20, making things much tougher for RBs Edwin Baker, Curtis Brinkley and Michael X. Hayes heading into training camp and the preseason.

Our view: The team lost FB Mike Tolbert in free agency, and Battle will compete with Le'Ron McClain to help fill that void. We don't expect Battle to get as many touches as Tolbert but he does have the versatility to contribute as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Norv Turner has said the team will give RB Ryan Mathews 'as much as he can handle' this year.

  • Davis expected to have expanded role

With Mike Tice replacing Mike Martz as Bears offensive coordinator this season, it’s no secret that tight ends are expected to be more involved in the passing game.

“Tight ends are the No. 1 reads and the No. 2 reads on a lot of passing plays now and a lot of the quick-game stuff will be good for us,” said tight end Kellen Davis.

The likelihood that Davis would be more involved in the offense was a big reason he chose to re-sign with the Bears in March after attracting serious interest elsewhere in free agency.

“I enjoy getting the ball,” Davis said. “It’s always fun and it amps me up, but I like run blocking too, especially if we can open up a big hole. Anytime we can get big plays, I’m up for that, especially when they’re going to me.”

Used predominantly as a blocker and a red-zone threat as a receiver last season, Davis led the Bears with five touchdown receptions while catching only 18 passes for 206 yards.

The 6-7, 267-pounder has appeared in all 64 games with 20 starts in four seasons since arriving in 2008 as a fifth-round pick from Michigan State, catching 28 passes for 300 yards and nine touchdowns.

Coach Lovie Smith is a big Davis supporter, saying during the offseason that he boasts great size, is a great in-line blocker and is “skilled enough as an athlete to be able to move outside and do some things.”

  • The Miami Herald describes sixth-round pick B.J. Cunningham's chances of making the Dolphins' final roster as "not good."

It's not a great sign for Cunningham in perhaps the league's most talent poor wide receiver corps. A star at Michigan State, Cunningham had a case of the dropsies throughout spring practice and apparently isn't making up for it so far in training camp. Rishard Matthews isn't making much noise, either.

Dammit. Well, there are always 31 other rosters and 32 practice squads to shoot for. Plus, BJ had hands issues as a freshman, and was able to make a remarkable improvement. If he can do it once, he can do it again.
