I'm willing to put money on a Tiger/Casey Martin pairing to start the tournament. The USGA loves creating some buzz with their opening round pairings.

Took the virtual course tour today. Wow. The new par 3, #8, is going to be a bitch. From the tee, it doesn't even really look like there is a green. It's just a sliver of fairway leading up to a tiny green that looks like one you'd hit to on the range. 200 yards isn't really that long for a Par 3 anymore (Olympia Fields had one that was 260), but this will be one of the tougher holes on the course throughout the week I'm sure. I didn't realize the only two Par 5s on the course were back to back. That could make for some fireworks late, but the one is 670 and the guy giving the tour said it could be stretched out to 696 if needed.

Willing to bet the USGA moves up the tees on 18 on Sunday to encourage more players to drive the green. It's 344 from the back tees, but it can be played from 315-320 from the next tee box up and that will persuade more people to go for it instead of just banging a hybrid down there and spinning a lob wedge in. I like a nice, long Par 4 for a finishing hole in the US Open, but this could be kind of exciting and that seems to be what the USGA is trying to make the US Open more of now as opposed to the usual papercut bogeyfest.

Anyone who wants to get to know the course, I'd recommend checking out wgt.com, where you can play a virtual round at Olympic Club on the US Open setup. Pretty fun. (My best score so far is 4-under par 66.)

Martin also has set up a practice round for Wednesday morning with his former Stanford teammate, Tiger Woods. They did the same thing in 1998, and Martin is looking forward to the reprise.
