tOfficial discuss Dan Roushar thread

  • Strange plays... i mean, the wildcat plays at the end - Bell all by himself, nobody there to block. Wondering why we abandoned success (the inside running game with Bell) only to throw into the teeth of the secondary over and over. Team seems to lack an offensive personality. We used to be a run-first, play-action team. Just looked like a reach into the grab bag of trick plays and wildcat desperation in the second half.

  • The OC didn't do a good job, but the wide receivers were getting absolutely no space at all this game. I swear all the sacks Nebraska had except for one was a coverage sack. I think this game was a mix of bad play calling and a bad match up with our wide receivers and their corners. Lucky for us that none of the teams we play does not have a secondary close to Nebraska's.

Was Finkel the O corrdinators at OSU? If not who was under Treasell. We should raid OSU's staff when they get fired at the end of the season.

Fickell was the DC, not sure who the OC was. I think Tressell called at least some of the plays.

  • I disagree about firing anyone 2/3 of a season into their first year as OC that is WAY too premature especially if you did this NO half way decent coordinator would ever want to coach here. While I'm defending the him against the firing talk, I will say that does not excuse what we saw. That was terrible playcalling. It was like we were bound to fit square pegs in round holes. The uphill run game was there for the taking and for whatever reason MSU refused to take it. All I hope for with 4 games left is just win. MSU can and should win at least 3 if not all 4 of the games.

My favorite was the Cousins play action with NO ONE in the backfield lol

    ~7-8min mark of the 3rd.

    This was heartbreakingly bad.

Draymond Green, Magic Johnson, and Oscar Robertson are the only players to have two triple-doubles in the NCAA Tournament.

Our O is talented, do you guys realize how nasty we would be with a good OC?

  • I don't want Roushar fired, I just want him to stop sucking. I'm a fucking idiot, and even I know where we went wrong in this game, and I could spot it from the second drive. Not a good sign.

There are a lot of tOSU fans that would pay us a handsome price to take Bollman off their hands I assure you. He is loathed there this season...

  • Didn't read the thread, therefore this may have been posted. Bottom line, Roushar sucks because promoting from within is easier than finding the right guy for the job.

We've lost two games this year due to Football Program laziness (and wretched excess...read: DIno Folino, Brad Lunsford, et. al., but that's a discussion for another day).

  • We have very talented offensive players and a decent offensive line - there is Absolutely NO Excuse for only scoring 3 points on a team that gave up 48 points to Wisconsin, 38 to Washington, and 29 to Fresno St. The play calling was terrible and there were zero adjustments against a defense that was banged up and playing inexperienced corners. This is the responsibility of the offensive coordinator and HE FAILED!

This his first year as MSU's OC, but he's been an OC before (at Ball State and Northern Illinois). No 'learning' excuse allowed this time around.

He was also the O Coordinator at Illinois in 2004, and Butler ('89-'92).

And during the Illinois year, they went 3-8.

  • Rocky and I were texting the entire game. He brought up this very good point...(I haven't bothered to look at all the posts above.

He said "Nebraska has had 4-5 years gearing their defense to play against Big 12 pass happy and spread offenses. So why in the hell did Roushar put a Big 12 game plan in for the offense this game????????frustratedheadslap

What was with all those empty backfields , trips wide with a single rb... Why didn't Roushar just have his mike plugged into the Nebraska coaching booth for all it was worth! Might as well have done that the way we were tipping our hand time and time again. Why no sharp cuts by the WR to the empy middle of the field? WHy no square routes at all? What was with all these incredibly shallow , loping pencil thin routes where the QB has to thread a midget needle to get a completion... and then , worse... throwing it into bracketed coverage. We gashed them pretty good with the power running... the were down TWO DTs for this game...two DTs for them were going ot have to play the entire time, their LBs besides david is slow and at 220 why not have 265 lb Anderson pound him all game long?

Really.... one of the stupidest game plans and sets of play calling I've ever seen. Played right into the teeth of their defense time and time again.....just absolutely horrible. AND.. NO ADJUSTMENTS AT HALF TIME! Geessshhh! And no urgency at getting the plays run when we were behind three scores.. Just unacceptable.!

You can see why Roushar was never able to stick as an OC.....this game plan, calling, game management etc shows he is really not up to the task. Sorry...but if MSU wants to get to the next level we have to look seriously as to whether we stay with this guy as the OC.

  • I just have to wonder if Roushar is maybe an exceedingly stupid human being. Everyone seems to be drawing the same conclusions about our gameplan, and everyone I talked to during the game, even during the first half, was already drawing these conclusions. He had his head so far up his ass this game that his face was coming out his mouth. I don't even know what the fuck that means.

More or less what I said lol.

Seriously though, Nebraska is comfortable playing against 4 and 5 wide sets. That's what they saw in the Big XII, and they had one of of the best pass D schemes to combat it. That scheme is ill-suited for handling a pro-style, power offense.

Why did we run a Big XII offense?

I have no idea, but this is the 2nd terrible road game for Roushar this season. I feel that the D played well enough to win, but got 0 help from the O.

I get that Roushar wants to go vertical more often, but:

    1) You can go vertical out of sets that aren't 5 wide.

    2) Sometimes it's ok to adjust your gameplan and go with power run; they didn't stop us once when MSU went up the gut, we got at least positive yardage.

    3) I hate the obvious formations. What I mean are the sets where it's obvious when we're running and obvious when we're passing. Seriously, you telegraph our play calling and then rely on our players to out-athlete the opposition. That works from time to time, but when it's obvious that it's not working, you need to re-examine your plan.

Finally, season is far from over. The Iowa game becomes incredibly important.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

You know, I've been hearing that from the "pros" (whateverTF that means) for a few years. I don't see it as a key part of what MSU's OC's decide to call. Every once and a while, but that's it. (And Dion should have caught his lone touch)

Almost as bad as when Bell picked up 16 yards on two carries and we immediately did a play action pass, despite the Nebraska safeties still playing deep. Two plays does not establish the damn run.

The receivers weren't open because of the coverage package and they only had to rush 4. They needed to run up the gut and off-tackle to loosen them up. Roushar lost his mind and never did.
