  • Has anyone tried Pizzeria Biga in Southfield yet? Same owner as Bacco. They serve Neopalitano-style pizza (whatever that means, supposedly more Italian) and my coworkers love the stuff. I hope I do too because they're opening a second location in the spring in downtown Royal Oak.

Here's their spiel, I'd put it in quotes, but well, I don't know how.
Our Biga, our yeast, is what makes our Neopalitano-style pizza different. Making the crust chewy, light and flavorful, Biga is a simple starter ingredient that creates a remarkable final product. Baked in a 900-degree wood-burning oven, our pizza crust ends-up slightly charred, as all real Neapolitano pizzas should.

Have you had Spags? I agree they are similar, but the sauce I like way better at Spags.

  • Detroit area version. I made it a quest to try them all a few summers ago when I was unemployed...or at least a lot of them. My list.

Best round - Alibi of Troy, Holiday Pizza of Sterling Heights
Best Detroit style - the old standby actually, Buddie's...most consistent. Honorable mention to The Gathering Place. When done right it's great....but they have a high miss rate.
    Best toppings/pepperoni - Green Lantern
Best Chicago style - Agree with whoever said Papalis has gone downhill. I made the trek out to NE Macomb to try a place called Father and Son Pizzeria and I'm giving it to them

Here's a list of places I tried (not all that summer obviously - no heart attack) not including the obvious chains:

    Buddies Pizza
    The Gathering Place (Troy)
    Corsi's (Livonia)
    Primo's (Birmingham)
    Pizza Papalis (Detroit)
    The Alibi (Troy)
    Alfoccino's (Farmington Hills, Auburn Hills)
    Passport Pizza
    Tony's Pizzeria (Troy)
    Pasquale's (Royal Oak)
    Como's (Ferndale)
    Sila (Berkley)
    Amici's (Berkley)
    Tweeny's (Farmington Hills, Berkley - u-bake)
    Buscemi's (East side)
    Supino Pizzeria (Eastern Market)
    Nikki's (Detroit)
    The Starting Gate Saloon (Northville)
    Pizzeria Uno
    Spagnuolo's (Okemos)
The South Lyon Hotel (Romulus - no just kidding, South Lyon)
G's Pizzeria (Lake Orion, Up North)
    Guido's Pizza
    Sammy's (Troy)
    Dan Good Pizza (Sterling Heights)
    Holiday Pizza (Sterling Heights)
    Sam's Sorrento Pizza (Shelby Township)
    Loui's Pizza (Hazel Park)
    Tania's Pizza (Royal Oak)
    Tower Pizza (Rochester)
    Georgio's Pizza & Pasta (Rochester)
    Frank's Pizza (Wyandotte)
    Green Lantern (Madison Heights)
    Shield's
    Tomatoes Apizza (Farmington Hills)
    Marco's pizza (chain)
    Mother's pizzeria (Plymouth, Commerce)
    Father & Son Pizzeria (Chesterfield)
    Cloverleaf Pizza (Clinton Twp)
    Antoniou's Town Square Pizza (Rochester)
    CJ Mahoney's (Rochester Hills)
    The Renshaw (Clawson)
    Kruse and Muer (Rochester)
    Get n' Go (Ferndale)
    Efros Brothers (Troy)
    Nino Salvaggio's (u-bake)
My cousin's New York Pizzeria (Bloomfield Hills)

i have. it's pretty darn good. that said, i still prefer tomatoes. in fact, i think the tomatoes at 14 mile and middlebelt is better than the halsted tomatoes. both have better pizza than biga. but biga is a way better restaurant experience. the food outside the pizza is all really well composed, too.

there isn't too much else that i've tried worth getting excited about. plenty of decent pizza, but only tomatoes and biga are outstanding.

  • When I was at MSU DeLuca's was like a hidden treasure tucked away on the North end known mostly by locals.

Fricano's in Grand Haven is very thin crust greasy pizza but very good.

Surprised no one mentioned the original Vitale's on Leonard NE in GR

  • DiMaggio's Pizza. On Blue Star Highway between South Haven and Saint Joseph, along Lake Michigan. The best in Michigan!

  • Brooklyn Pizza in B'ham or Supino's in Detroit. If I'm feeling cheap, I'd go for Primo's in Birmingham. Green Lantern if I'm desperate.

And for good measure - I think Buddy's is terrible. I swear it tastes like the dough isn't even cooked half the time.

Corner of 12 Mile and John R. in Madison Hts.

You need several napkins to absorb the grease out of the curled pepperoni.

This times 10. Don't forget that they put about a pound of cheese on each pizza. BTW, get the round... it's the better one that they offer IMO.

For anything that is deep-dish... Pizzapapalis, HANDS DOWN!. Best deep dish, Chicago-style pizza you can get outside of going to Chicago.
