  • Thought I'd give everyone a head's up about this. I typicall don't run with my phone, but it might be fun to play around with.

RunKeeper Pro—Our Favorite Mobile Running App—Is Free Through January, Normally $10

iOS/Android: Our favorite run-tracking app (and yours) RunKeeper, available for both iOS and Android, is offering a free download of their pro version through January (normally $10).

  • I've seen a lot of these running apps for phones and they seem cool, but I also don't run with a phone.

  • I downloaded it even though I use Nike+ just in case I want to switch to something else. I am trying to use my phone for more and more things, so maybe I can ditch my ipod for my phone with Runkeeper.

  • I've tried the Runkeeper app a couple times now but the GPS on it does not work well with my droid. It doesn't properly recognize my location until about halfway through my run, the first time it said I ran an extra 10 miles. But sometimes I have issues with my droid GPS so it might not be the app.

But good thing I got it for free, I wouldn't have paid money for it. I've heard Endomondo does pretty much the same thing so I might see if that works any better.

Also, don't put your mp3 player in the wash with your workout clothes, I now need to get a new Sansa Clip. But surprisingly my earbuds still work fine.

  • I downloaded "My Tracks" to my Droid last summer. It seems to work okay on bike rides. I've used it while walking the dog a few times and it works fairly well, not super accurate, but if you want to track distance/time it seems to work fine. It also tracks elevation change, but living in Chicago this is pretty worthless.

  • Anyone have any experience as runners with a torn calf soleous / gastrocnemious muscle?? How long is this going to take until I can star running again. Is this going to be one of those that is going to bother me the rest of my life?

Happened on 01/03/11 while down in FL and I haven't started walking on it yet, but am in a walking boot and on crutches still. I may be able to start taking a few steps this weekend, I hope. I'm afraid that I am looking at 8-10 weeks or so for a recovery timeframe - which sucks!!! Let me know if you have any advice.

    Just thought I would ask...

  • So is there no Heart of a Spartan this year? Kinda disappointed, I thought the event went well.

  • i was also disappointed to see that. it was the week before the river bank run 25k in GR, which was perfect timing.

i use a GPS watch with HR monitor, so i haven't really spent much time on runkeeper for my iphone.

  • No Heart of a Spartan this year. That said if you go to playmakers.com there are plenty of 5k's on campus throughout the year. None finish inside the stadium. I emailed the SpartanFund asking why (they received $$ from last years run if I remember right) never got a reply.

  • Two questions -

Why would you run with your phone?

If you want to track your data, why not get a Garmin?

I do like my Garmin, but I don't wear it every single time out. The data it collects is pretty good though. It's also very accurate.

This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.

Which one do you have? I bought the 305 Forerunner a few years ago, and I love the data but I just get sick of wearing what feels like a mini-laptop on my wrist.

I see Polar has decent looking GPS watches now as well, I'm just not sure I would trust it as much as I trust Garmin.

  • I have the 305 and yea it's a bit big at first. Honestly, I don't even notice it anymore though. At one point I thought about getting the 405 but people I know that have it have gone back to the 305.

Putting the data into the program that comes with it is ok, but Garmin Connect is far better.

  • Doing a 15k in March, half in July. Probably hood to coast again in the fall. Depending on how that half goes, considering Portland Marathon in October.

I haven't checked out Garmin Connect, I'll give it a shot.

I've had the watch for 3 years and still find it annoying. Oh well.

Maybe you're not aware of this, but "phones" do more than make calls these days.

  • Knocked out the first race of the year today in the cold and rain. Portland Shamrock 15k in 77min. Kind of disappointed as I left some energy in the tank. First time running this race and wasn't prepared for the first 5-6mi being uphill. Got a huge soaker with around 3mi to go. But felt real good. Haven't been running a ton but have been playing lots of basketball. Next up is a half in June.

    Nice.
I am running the Shamrock Shuffle 8k in Chicago on April 10. That will be my first race of the season, besides an indoor triathlon which I don't really count.

Garmin Forerunners are cool devices, but phones track data, play music and you can call someone in an emergency situation. Strap it to your arm, plug in some headphones and off you go.

I don't run with a phone, but it doesn't seem that crazy to me.

I was really bummed to hear they weren`t having it this year. I missed it last year and heard it was a great time from some friends who ran it.

  • You make good points. I don't run with music and carry a road Id in case something happens.
Sometimes I think people forget what it was like without technology and that things were just fine if nobody knew anything but you were out running. Then again I will put my phone up for days on end sometimes.

Yes I am posting from an iPod.

In May I'll be running the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City and I'm thinking of running the Martian half in Dearborn next month.

I have never used a gps while running and have been looking at getting the garmin forerunner 305. While running will I be able to see exactly how far I have gone? I think that could help my 5k times to know exactly where I am in the race.

Yes, it will tell you a lot more than that on the spot.

My advice on 5k is don't look at a watch during. You should be going all out the entire time. If you are holding back, you aren't racing it properly. Just my thought on that distance.

Agree. Just run all out (or as close as you can get) and you'll be done soon enough.

  • I use cardio trainer by worksmart labs...their gps is very accurate. I also integrate my heart rate monitor with it.

it not only records your walks/runs/bike rides, but does a lot of different things including weight lifting. When I lift weights with a trainer, i use this app because it monitors my heart rate.

  • For those without a fancy phone or GPS I suggest: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

I've used it for everything from bike rides to trail running. Quite handy.

+2 on the Sansa Clip. Just wish they had a removable AAA battery.
