I'll caveat this by saying I'm a novice runner, with my furthest distance run being 10 miles earlier this year. Normally I'm between 4 and 6 miles, 2 or 3 times per week, but I'll admit that I'm woefully inconsistent...

    1. How to best hydrate before and during the race? 2. Best foods to eat the night before, day of, etc

Some of this stuff will be trial and error. I use to have to wait 2 full hours to run if I drank or ate anything, now I can drink right before I go out the door. Drink a lot of water throughout the day and during a run I take smaller sips if I drink at all.

Eating- What works best for you but don't eat a lot prior to a big run or a race. The saying goes if you do a lot of carbo loading the day before you are going to do a lot of unloading the day of the race...I do carbs, breads, rice, fruit, stuff like that but what ever gives you energy.

As far as feeling great some days and bad the others, that happens too all of us you just have to mentally fight through it.

sounds like my Detroit experience in 2007 - it's a bad feeling.. mine wasn't due to beer, though - - it was 83 degrees that day.. felt fine at 15-16.. and then around the 18 mile mark it was like someone ran up to me and said "Sir, would you mind carrying this cinder block the rest of the way"...

I've had good marathon experiences and bad ones.. that was the worst..

Yeah, it was 88 in Chicago that year too. First half was in the shade of the buildings and felt like about 65-70. Right at the 13.1 mark you went out into the burbs, down to us cellular and then back up. I had blisters on my shoulders from the burn (i was running for charity and wasnt used to running in a tank)

Side note - anyone else run the Chase Corporate Clusterfuck Challenge in Chicago yesterday? If so, next time, please get in the correct color group instead of going out with the sub 8 minute-ers and then walking right in front of us :) It was fun, but made me feel like I was playing frogger trying to dodge people.

if I'm just going out for 4-8 miles first thing in the morning, I'll drink some coffee and hit the road/trail about 20 minutes later..

if I'm going longer than that, I'll make sure I'm a bit more hydrated and eat a little something.. my preferred pre-workout food is a chewy granola bar with a fairly thick layer of peanut butter on it.. easy to eat and the protein from the peanut butter fills you up a bit, as well..

I started making home made ones a couple months ago.

    1 cups almonds
    1 cup raisins
    1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup bran flakes or other cereal
    2 cups oatmeal

Then combine with 1 cup of honey and 1.5 cup peanut butter that you melt together in the microwave.

Then just spread it out into a pan, put in the fridge and let it firm up before cutting. I keep them in the freezer in a ziploc, then pull them out about 5 minutes before i want to eat them. Waaaaaaay better than any store bought one I have ever had.

  • I love it when it's already 75 degrees by 8am. Going to be even better when I'm supposed to run 9 on Sunday and it's gioing to be even hotter. Then I'm supposed to go to DEMF where it will be 90 degrees out and I'll be drinking beer. Going to be rough.

I miss running when it's hot and raining in the burbs of East Lansing.

After last year's rock and roll in Seattle, I ended up at lunch with a few other Spartans from Chicago. They were complaining about our hills, but I prefer hills to heat any day.

    Same.

Most mornings I just get up, walk the dog, and then go run without eating or drinking anything. I'll sip a little water from drinking fountains on longer runs if it's hot, but I have no issues doing 5-6 miles with no water on an empty stomach.

Mind you, I'm usually starving when I get home and raid the fridge before I even cool down.

If I'm going to be out running for longer than an hour, I will eat something small 15-20 minutes before heading out. Maybe take a gel along and hit it halfway through the run or something.

If you're eating the right way (meaning you eat just enough so that you're not hungry anymore -- NOT TO THE POINT WHERE YOU'RE FULL) you shouldn't have problems running without eating something in the morning.

I would still drink at least a cup of water so as to stay hydrated.

If I'm really hungry in the morning, I will eat a cup of yogurt, banana, or an apple.

I use my cell phone and an app called Endomondo. It records your route like this.

Eh just my routes and age and weight. I'm not too concerned about that.

Yes, this app is great! I have a phone holder that works great. I usually just play music or stream pandora and then turn on this app to track my miles/time. Have you set up challenges with friends/family? The challenges are awesome as they really motivate you to work out more/longer.

In my circle of friends/family we have a monthly contest for most miles: overall, cycling, running, and walking.

I bought a Garmin 210 a few months ago. Not nearly as fancy as their newer models, but I it does what I want it to do, cost less than $200 and doesn't look or feel like a laptop strapped to my wrist.

From the research I did before buying the watch, it seems that the Nike watch wins on looks, but the Garmin watch has the better GPS (more satellites so it syncs faster and is more accurate).

  • On a side note, I picked up some Nike hyper cool shirts at the outlet and they are awesome. I will defiantly be getting another couple.

Can you use it for a regular watch also? I mean, without it looking too goofy and huge

    I have a Garmin Forerunner 305.
It works pretty well and does more than I need. It's a little buggy with uploading sometimes.

I like that it has a heart rate monitor, and that I can set it up to track different splits if I want. Plus it has a biking mode which is nice.

Here's a link to the watch I bought. Its much closer to a normal watch size then some of the other Garmins - I'd say the face circumference is comparable to that of a normal digital sport watch. The real difference is that the face is much thicker than a normal watch.

As long as you're at least an average size guy, I don't think it would look that weird to wear it as a casual everyday watch, but you'll have to remember to charge it every day or two if you wear it all the time. I'd probably just a buy a cheap second watch for everyday use so that I didn't have to worry about charging the Garmin all the time.

  • First marathon is next Saturday. Did 13.1 last Saturday in 1:49 (in my taper). Skipped a run today for yoga. Hoping for a 4 hour time.

Funny how much better my runs have been when I hydrate properly. Question for the group- do any of you carry your own Gatorade during a marathon? I know that there are aid stations every couple of miles, but I've found my belt (holding 3 8.5 oz bottles) very convenient.

I've used my own belt for half marathons. I just trust my own bottles more I guess. Not that I love carrying the two 8 oz bottles though.

  • Just finished the A2 half, pretty good event (but wish they had some biofreeze at the finish). Anyhow, I have some time to kill do any of the lawyer types out there know what the potential punishment would be if one were to leap the fence at the big house, run out onto the field and defecate on the block M at midfield?
