What do you guys who have said running 5Ks "hurt too much" and you have stopped doing them, but you clearly run longer distances, mean by those sentiments? I've run a couple of 5Ks and will possily build up to a 10K in the next month or so...not getting why the shorter distance is more "painful".

    It's a fast race.

I'm doing Hood to Coast again this year. Maybe I'll see you this time.

I hope I can do it. My wife and I are scheduled to have a kid in August.

  • Got a Garmin 405CX. I have no idea if it will help my running or not, but its a cool piece of tech.

  • I run 6 miles about 4x week. Many hills here in ATL, so given that context: my gym added these Jacob's Ladder machines and I tried it this past Friday.

Holy Crap. I lasted 5 mins before my legs burned and calves started cramping up. Definitely using this machine weekly. It is a challenge now.

  • Anyone have a good GPS/heart rate monitor that they use to run? I basically just want something that will tell me my heart rate and pace/speed. Thinking about going with the Garmin Forerunner 305, it got good reviews but it looks a little bulky.

I will assume you are strictly a jogger.......if so, then it should be fine. Not a big fan of wearing anything(gadgets, that is); i would recommend just taking your vitals after the run.

UM, Green Bay and Chicago teams all have one thing in common: They all suck

  • Just signed up for the River Bank Run 5k in GR. Anyone else here doing any of the River Bank Run events?

    Oh... okay.

I should have known better than to ask advice from this place.

  • I don't have a Garmin Forerunner, but several people in my old running club wear them. They aren't bulky, and I'm sure you'd get used to wearing it quickly. They seem to work great.

I've been thinking of picking up something like this too. I wear a Polar HRM, but it is very basic. Just heart rate and a stopwatch. I map my runs when I get home to get the distance, and log them on a website (dailymile.com) that calculates pace. These workout journal sites can upload data directly from a Garmin, which is pretty cool.

Having real-time speed/pace info is great if you do any kind of interval training.

I have a 305 and wear it on most runs. However, I have never put on the HRM because I don't really care to do it and it looks like a chaffing magnet. The 305 is really cheap now and works great. If you put the data into Garmin Connect you get some good stuff from it.

It's bulky at first, but you get used to it. I don't mind it anymore.

This country was built by people who worked hard then went home and had just a few too many every night. Then went back to work.

Damn. I just checked Amazon and you can buy a 305 for like $130.

Wow. Why so cheap, I wonder?

Also, I think the 405 has heart rate monitoring without the chest strap. (Not that this info really helps you...) There might be non-chest strap options that work with the 305.

Garmin 405CX. So far so good. Only taken it on a couple runs so far, but the data it collects is pretty intense. I believe Nike just came out with a true GPS watch as well. Not sure if it is also a HRM.

  • The people I know with the 405 went back to wearing their 305. I guess the didn't like touching the bezel as it's pretty sensitive.

Personally, you have to be a serious gear head to buy the 405 over the 305 when you can get the later for under $150 and it does basically the same things.

  • Phil - The 305 is cheap because it's been out for a while. That is the only reason.

I guess it pays to wait. lol
I remember looking at these a few years ago and thinking "cool, but I don't really want to drop $300 on one".

Now they're practically the price of a regular heart rate monitor.

anyone here go thru a phase where running is a pain in the ass? I normally have run 5-6 miles 3-4x week. Lately I am tired very quickly and either run 3.5 miles (part of my loop...there are points I can turn back) or I run 5 but walk a few times. Sucks I tell you! Hope I just push thru it and it comes back. Maybe I need to switch up to other cardio.

I've started power/hot yoga in addition to running. So far, so good.

Yes, everyone goes through times when running isn't as easy as normal for some reason. A lot of the time it's related to your diet. Re-focus on fueling properly before and after runs. I would also recommend seeing a sports therapist for a hardcore massage. It will hurt like hell but it will make your legs feel great after. Maybe focus more on stretching and using your roller too?

Oh yeah, I had a really shitty 4 mile run this morning. Felt like I was dragging an anchor the whole time.

I'm sure it was all the booze, beer and pizza, plus a few long workouts over the weekend that I'm tired from.
Usually when I have a few crappy runs, I take a few days off. I think my body is trying to tell me something...

Nothing, I do it all the time. I do really like looking at the routes, elevation, pace and what not though.

Like I said, I don't always wear it.
