  • It's pretty simple, and pointed out by Louis CK in that clip. White males don't care what they are called or portrayed as (well, obviously less than others). So it's the safest gender and race to show being stupid.

  • It's the safest thing to do. You put any other gender/race combination in there, and someone's going to get offended by stereotyping. Think of it as a compliment. White males have never been thought of as racially inferior (at least outside of China), so there aren't any hot buttons to push by portraying them as buffoons.

    Sad but true and there's one race in particular that would have a hissy fit by stereotyping. We see and hear about said "hissy fits" every day about any and every little thing.

  • I don't see the 'white guy' bias -- you could just as easily look at those ads and be upset that they hired a white actor instead of a black guy.

    I do agree, though, that there is an anti-male bias in a lot of advertising -- hell, in a lot of movies, TV, etc. For some reason, it's not only acceptable, but considered hilarious if a guy gets kicked in the balls on screen. But what do you think the reaction would be if you depicted a woman getting hit in the crotch with a golf club, then doubling over in pain? Yeah, ha effin' ha, right?

    I blame The Cosby Show. Despite being a highly educated man, Dr. Cliff Huxtable was always doing stupid things and getting himself into trouble, while that snotty bitch Clare looked down her nose at him and always had to sort out the messes her idiot husband got himself into. Up until then, you had just as many dumbass female characters on TV (Edith Bunker, Lucy Ricardo -- even Mrs. Cunningham was no rocket scientist). Then along come the Huxtables and it suddenly becomes fashionable for the man to be a retard and the woman to always have everything under control.

    I'm trying to think of a recent example of a female character being portrayed as an idiot, and I can't think of one -- at least not without a male counterpart who's even more inept.

  • At the end of the day, the only group of people that it is ok to make fun of/depict as idiots/descriminate against is the 21-40 yo white male. IMHO, who cares...yes I fit into this category, but I will tell everyone here the same thing I have told a bunch of other "offended" people...If you don't like it, change the channel, turn the radio dial, read a book, watch porn (pretty certain it's not the man looking like an idiot there).

  • What I've noticed in commercials is that anytime someone is shown breaking into a house, robbing someone etc........ (home security systems etc) it is always a white guy doing the breaking in. Never, ever will you see an African American playing the role as the robber.......
