  • Seems unusual to offer a scholarship to a long snapper. Since he is class of 2012 and will be joining team this summer it makes me wonder if we are not having some issues with long snapping this spring.

  • Here is my analysis of LS Tabor Pepper :

LS Taybor Pepper (6'-3.5", 196 lbs.) - He is one of the top LS in the USA. He has big hands and long arms which allows him to get terrific velocity on his snaps, especially on long snaps back to the punter. He has excellent size potential and has the frame to get much bigger and stronger in a college S & C program. He was planning to be a preferred walk-on @ UM but accepted a scholarship when MSU offered. He may contribute as a true Fr.

wow....contribute as a true frosh? Hmmmmmmmmm.....interesting at 196 lbs.....what weight could we expect him to be by opening game CBD: 210ish?

He will be up over 200 lbs. by the beginning of the season.
Remember, under NCAA rules now, defenses can no longer line up a player head-up on the LS. No more "ash canning" the LS.

  • This is something I appreciate about the coaching staff: getting and developing quality special teams players.

There's nothing worse than losing the momentum of a game due to a botched snap or a blocked kick.

LS isn't the most glamorous of positions but it's nice to lock a kid up with such high reviews for the next four years.

Thanks for the info. Question: does this now give MSU three long snappers? Sonntag was the unsung hero of the Outback Bowl for fielding a few poor snaps as a holder, so maybe we only have 2 legit LS? Since I have no insight into the team, offering a scholarship on (presumably) a luxury utility player when we are so tight on scholarships was surprising. Is there more to this story?

    TIA

Duffy - Maybe you can offer some insight into this, as I'm confused by this as Tupes is.

By all accounts, Giampappa (sp?) did an excellent job through the season last year, but then ran into some disciplinary trouble prior to the bowl game. Why would we need two top end LS's, unless the incumbent was not going to be back this year ?

I think you probably answered your own question there...

There have been rumors that Giampappa got in trouble again this offseason.

  • LS is definitely not a luxury. Do not like using a scholarship, but sounds like the need became great.

Also maybe a little addition by subtraction thrown in; adding to us, subtracting from scum.

How many games are won or lost with field goals or messed up punts.

I think Long Snappers are as worthy of schollies as Kickers and Punters because you never fully appreciate them until you have a bad one and it hurts your chances because a bad snap can cost you a win as much as a bad kick at the end of the game can. I realize it's not a glamour position but when you have a good one they are worth their weight in gold. He supposedly was one of the best LS's in the country and I'm happy he got an offer.

Don't disagree at all. I believe they often come in as Walk-ons and earn their Schollies. Not grabbing a good when where there is a need, would not be wise.

Based on where we are at in Spring practice and the fact they said he would be competiting in the fall, the need must be there. Sonntag, as mentioned before, saved us a couple times against GA.

Matt Giampapa, MSU Long Snapper Is Leaving Spartan Football…

Looks like trouble finally caught up to Giampapa... Good pickup with Pepper.. And F* scUM

  • Giampapa wasn't in any trouble this Spring.
He was basically homesick and wants to be closer to his family in TN.
He told Coach D about a month ago that he wanted to go back home and wouldn't be enrolling back at MSU this Fall.
Thus, the scholarship offer to Pepper.
Note : Giampapa was in line to earn that scholarship this Fall.

Thanks for clearing that up. Ends a lot of unfounded speculation.
