  • Matt Eleweke Is Headed To MSU As A Preferred Walk-On

An in-state linebacker attended the Spartans’ spring game on Saturday and says he is headed to Michigan State as a “preferred walk-on.”

Fantastic. Welcome. MSU has a fine tradition of walk-ons producing and earning scholarships. No coaching staff is more loyal to it's players than MSU's.

THIS. I have always been very proud to be a Spartan. Our treatment of athletes is phenomenal, even when their athletic careers don't pan out as planned. coachd

I remember seeing an article on Scout or Rivals a few months back about him deciding between walking on at MSU or signing with Syracuse, awesome get.

Being called a sunshine blower is not insulting to me and I'm proud to be one.

Matthew's final offer from Syracuse was as a Preferred Walk-On, not a full scholarship.

  • Here is my analysis of Matthew Eleweke :

LB/DE Matthew Eleweke (6'-3", 216 lbs.) - He relies on his speed and quickness to make plays. He has the acceleration to get to the ball once he diagnoses the play and can run with ease. He has some attributes of a "quick twitch" athlete and plays with a good motor. Even more impressive than his acceleration, is Eleweke’s closing speed. He finishes plays once he gets to the runner and shows good tackling ability. Against the pass, he comes off the edge as a pass rusher in his HS team's defense and rarely drops back into pass coverage. If he stays at LB, he will need coaching in dropping back into pass coverage. If he can bulk up once he is in a college level S & C program he could develop into a speedy edge pass rusher @ DE. He wil begin his MSU career as a LB. He has play-making ability that translates to BCS-level football. He will be red-shirted.

After reading your analysis, I'm surprised he didn't get offers. Glad to have as a preferred walk on.

Many teams felt Eleweke was a "tweener" between DE and LB. No matter which position he plays at the next level, he will have to gain additional size and strength.
He started to show some potential as a Sr. but most teams had moved off of him by then.
He is definitely a developmental prospect at this time but well worth a Preferred Walk-On offer.
