  • Welcome to MSU. I hope the time you spend there turns out to be as much fun and educational as the years I spent there in the 80's. I had a blast, learned a lot, and learned a lot about myself. I trust you will too.

Happy to hear you are as excited about being a Spartan as I was when I was your age. I was bouncing off the walls!! A dream come true for me, and I hope it's a dream come true for you as well.

Best wishes in everything for you and your time in East Lansing. GO GREEN!

Competition doesn't seem very strong, but Kodi is demolishing guys, and seems to play with a real mean streak. Looks terrific on D-line, too. Looks like he relishes physical contact. I have read that he has spent more time on D-line, so technique in pass blocking in particular will likely need work. Don't be fooled by lack of acclaim by recruiting services. Absolutely has size, athleticism, and motor to go with aforementioned mean streak.

Kodi's high school is 15 minutes away from me and I think my nephew's football team plays Carlson. Might have to check him out this year.

  • 3 star on Scout and ranked as the 75th OT in the country.

Like his size at 6'5" and 275 but i read somewhere else that he is already up to 300?

edit: mlive has him at 6'6" 307lbs

    http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2011/08/report_michigan_state_gets_ver.html

If he is already that big and he is in HS that means that he should be able to add strength and size without too much of a problem.

    Kieler Swaps Blue For Green

Spartan Tailgate caught up with Rockwood (Mich.) Oscar Carlson OT Kodi Kieler, who became the newest Spartan Monday despite growing up with his eyes on the Wolverines.

  • OT Kodi Kieler (6'-6", 302 lbs) - Fills a position of need in the 2012 class. Tough, physical player who plays hard all the time. Has the frame to get bigger and stronger and may still be growing. He dominates as a run blocker vs. his level of competition but like all young OL he will need coaching in pass blocking technique. He plays with emotion and has a mean streak. His film as a DE is also pretty impressive, showing that he has some quickness and athleticism. As Allen Trieu stated, he was playing DE last season at 270-275 lbs. but has grown into a OT at the next level. When he arrives on campus, Coach Mannie will take his weight down and then build him back up to an eventual 320 lb. mauler. He will be red-shirted.

  • Nice write up. One thing you can't teach is size and if this kid gets to 6-7 or 6-8, watch out!

  • Welcome to State, Kodi Keeler.

Saw the Rivals due claim in the Freep several days ago that Keeler was somewhat under the radar of the recruiting services because he hadn't gone to a lot of camps, a la Keyshawn Martin a few years ago.

Anyone know if there's veracity to that claim?

Well let me say welcome to the Spartan Nation Mr. Kieler!
Okay, here's my breakdown of the film:
    1) He has gained over 15lbs since last season and I'm sure he has added strength. That's a big strong boy.
    2) He has nice speed for his size.
    3) Great Burst! but I would've like to see him pancake those little bastards more. Still a very affective blocker though.
    4) Looks very coachable and the one thing he has that you can't coach is size. (I know I mentioned this before)

We needed to get a couple of OT's in this class and I think that Dantonio said "Hey this guy could be coached up and he's huge. Let's get him and then let our other recruits know first come first served". We all know that Kieler wasn't a "Plan A" guy but neither was LeVeon Bell (and that seemed to work out pretty well for everyone).
The MSU coaching staff has been pretty amazing at finding hidden potential and even better at dismissing *stars and all that BS. Hopefully Kieler has a great senior season and gets more coaching on the OL so he can become a valuable player in 2013-2014 for Sparty. Good stuff.

  • There are two things that most everybody goes by when judging recruits: stars and quality of offers. Stars are stars and he is "under the radar" per say on the recruiting sites, while the murmur on this site is he lacked "quality" offers. Not to think outside of the box here, but how come a MSU offer isn't considered quality? Why do we have to beat out Iowa/Wisconsin/scUM for a recruit for him to be accepted no questions asked? (Yes i just asked a question about asking questions). I, for one, am excited for this guy just as much as the rest of the guys coming in, because each of them will be apart of a winning program.

I believe he only did a one day camp at Michigan so he hasn't had much exposure. I think he's a great pick-up and a player that could surprise down the road.

OK. Was originally showing as premium on one of the Scout boards.

I saw it on Trieu's twitter, clicked through and I could read it (I don't have rivals or scout membership). Trieu is generally a good evaluator in my opinion so I thought people wouldn't mind reading his take on Kieler.
