'12 OH DT Terrell Jackson (Pitt Commit)

  • SpartanRocky said...

You're off by nearly 30 pounds on Iowa. Mitch King and Matt Kroul were the best DT combo in the B1G and played at 255 and 264 respectively. Karl Klug then played at 268 and Mike Daniels was a "giant" at 274.

To Red Hot Llama: Don't get too caught up in heights/weights. There are certain thresholds (you don't see a 5'10 DT usually), but I've seen guys range from 6'0 to 6'7 have great success at DT in college, and range from 255 (King) to 350 pounds. It's all about technique and hands. Additionally, it matters where the weight is; John Simon for tOSU played DT at around 270 this season but is a weight room freak athlete. Being 6'4 320 doesn't do you any good if most of that weight is fat.

As it pertains to these recruits, don't worry if they're "undersized" right now; they're not being expected to play and even if they were, they have 8 months to diet and exercise. If you can safely add or lose 1 pound/week, you're looking at a possible weight gain of 30 pounds or more between now and the fall. More likely they're going to RS; evaluate where they're at in the fall of 2013.

Just to Piggy back on this a little bit... Pickleman started out his CFB career as a LB (roughly 220lbs). Finished as a DT.
Jackson already has a good frame and size that will be molded in a college weight room. He'll have plenty of time to become Billy Bad Ass before he takes the field. nerd

  • I'd rather have a guy that is solid and in shape but needs to add 20-30 lbs that a guy who needs to lose weight or turn a bunch of fat into muscle. Jackson looks like a good athlete with a good frame to add as much weight as he needs, wouldn't surprise me to see him at 295 lbs in 2 years.

  • Awesome, thanks for all the replies gentlemen, especially Rocky. Really great stuff!

PS: You can't turn fat into muscle Johnny nerd

lol technically you're correct, but generally when you're building muscle, your body is burning fat to do so. That give the impression of the fat turning into muscle. I suppose it is, indirectly, in that the fat is broken down to fuel the muscle growth.

Edit: I don't like these new emoticons.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Sorry, I just finished medical biochemistry last semester. Lol, i'm starting to scare myself. Back on topic, I'm really excited about this recruitment, hope he chooses the good guys.

Quick question for ya (or any of the other recruitniks) What is a good weight for a B10 D-lineman and does he have the frame to add some more mass?

Although listed on rivals as 255...some reports have him as high as 270 right now.

He'll be redshirted and should easily be able to get to around 290.

He's going to be a good one...forget about stars and watch his tape.

I haven't seen his tape, but I usually look at offer sheets over stars. I didn't hear of him early in the process so my blind assumption was that he was going to be a reach late offer type of guy.

My assumptions were wrong because when I checked out his profile it listed offers from Illinois, Pitt and Iowa. He will be a great addition to this class.

  • Jackson somewhat flew under the radar because the only camp he attended last year was MSU's summer Big Man's Camp. He had a good performance at that camp and the Spartan staff stayed in contact with him.
Some of the Spartan coaches also attended his HS game the Fri. night before the OSU game.
When he gave Duke a verbal back in Dec. the staff backed off a little bit but when Jerel Worthy declared for the NFL, the staff got back in contact with Jackson and Jackson was still greatly interested in MSU.
Now he will be a Spartan soon.

i'm not a star whore at all...I don't care what they are as long as coachd wants them and they want to be here. I was just surprised to see the bit that he was the OH Defensive player of the year but only a low 3 star so wondered if there was an injury concern or something limiting his ranking. he's listed as the 74th player in the state...just seems odd.

that said, he looks like a beast and i can't wait to see him in green and white!

The drives only around 4 hrs and 40 minutes or so. Crazy that he would fly.

Not his dime. trips are school paid.

amen....kid doesn't get to hop on a plane that often: at least I didn't when I was that age...with bad weather on the roads that trip could turn into 6-7 hours easy. I would have flown too.....he should be Green by Monday morning. Now for Madaris, Cox, Dodson and WInston............I would think 2-3 of them should close out the class

    Jackson's 6'3. . . . Winston's a legit 6'5.

Winston has a LARGE frame. With some work from Ken Mannie, I can see him being a beast. Fingers crossed that this isn't the only time we see him in Green & White...

Edit- Moving this to Winston thread...my bad

This must mean its Winston for the class. Too bad, I wanted Jackson too. Good luck to you, Terrell!

Winston, or if we miss out on him, we go after Pinnix-Odrick.

I think we would've taken Jackson in a second (and it would've been mutual) if Winston wasn't coming. I gotta think his verbal is imminent and that will be an absolutely amazing finish to what now should be a top-25 class.

  • I wonder if that "conditional" offer stuff is true. If it is he made the right choice. Better to take the sure thing.

Best of luck to him. Johnson and Jackson in the middle......

Or Jackson got tired or waiting for an offer he could commit to and went to Iowa so he knew he had a seat on the bus. The staff may not have heard anything from Winston yet.
