Also, is this the son of CFL Legend and Hall of Famer David (Dr. Death) Fennell...can anyone confirm this?

Spent most of his high school years in Canada but transferred to Oregon to finish?

  • Ya, that's a really good point, I haven't thought of that..Would like that idea then, just think that Johnson and Jackson kid would be better bets and Midwest kids. Really want Johnson to switch, but if this kid is coming in I trust the staff must know Johnson is out then. They would take Johnson before this kid and if had any hope on Johnson I bet staff would wait. We shall see

He doesn't have an offer yet. Very odd thing...Would be disapointted if he took our last DT spot, was hoping for that Jackson kid or Jaleel.

Seems like after the staff finds kids like Le' Veon, etc., fans would stop questioning who the staff offered, grey-shirted, or whatever. If the staff spends their time on someone, that's all I need to know.

Also, it's sort of a leap to equate a youngster who hasn't gotten an offer yet to kids the staff has been after for years. It's not likely one or the other.

    spartan80

  • I understand that, but I mean the coaches haven't even seen this kid play in person or anything, just worries me they are going after a kid from there with just 1 year of tape, but the staff is best @ finding talent and developing it, can't disagree there, just think with back-back 11 win seasons and Jerel Worthy a 1st rounder we could have some easy sucess and getting a DT that has an offer @ least..But I do trust staff.

  • A) He was 6'1" & 240 when he was 15.
    B) His dad could buy him a college team.

Alright the link's no good, but here's why I posted it. From the UND site:

Bison06, just in case you are not familiar with some of the names that others have thrown out, here is some more info on a few of the notable Canadians to play at UND:

Dave Fennell: CFL Hall of Famer, 6 time Grey Cup winner, 1978 CFL Defensive Outstanding Player

In addition to being one of UND's great football players, Fennell also has been a very successful businessman. He recently sold one of his goldmines for $1.5 billion.

Is this how we are paying for our new scoreboard?

I've heard of paying college players, but not players playing schools lol

Just messing around, would love to have him!

  • Could be. I like the kids film. Gets under blockers, uses his hands well one DL.

If he got a scholarship, I wouldn't be disappointed. He isn't going to see the field right away regardless.

This could be the case where the recruiting services missed on this kids since he played in the US only a year. They do most of their assessing in the Summer at camps, and they could have just missed this kid because he didn't participate in the.

Google David Fennell football. ESPN list his name in their database but nothing else, I didn't see anything from Rivals or 247. I saw his Dad more than I saw him, and the post here showed up more than threads on David.

Oregon Preps has him listed as a prospect, that is all I found.

Somebody sent MSU some film and tipped them off to this kid. I remember one thing Jim Tressel said about MD, and that was there was no better evaluator of D talent than MD.

    In MD I trust.

  • Mobile for a big kid!! He uses of hands, Plays high but that tell me he is strong as a bull looks good!

    ronkbacon

  • Why? Did you not read the posts above?

We are talking about a kid who was not on nobody's radar, who has good film. Unless college coaches take the time to see the film, won't take notice.

David played one year of football in the US, and was not at any summer camps where the like of ESPN, Rivals or 247 assess kids for their rankings.

I don't view this as a greyshirt recruitment or desperation on MSU's part. MD and staff think this kid can play, and are jumping all over him.

Based on his film, I think he can play too. First season in American football, and he was all state division 6A, with no hype like the other kids being recruited.

I could be wrong in the long run, but I trust MD's ability to judge D players, and my belief this kid fell through the cracks.

I'm really pretty disappointed that this is where we are at the DT position 2 weeks before signing day. Oh well

Quit Whining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are not a coach doing recruiting. Trust in them, dont just expect them to be chasing 3* or above.. plent of kids don't get evaluated... this could be a major hidden gem. I hope the kid ends up with us and takes the college football world by storm. He has the pedigree to do it. Thats enough of a reason for me to give him a chance.

Nah, solid DT recruit. He would be 6'3' and 300 after one year with Mannie.

It's not like he's going to play in 2012 anyway.

  • Maybe there are going to be more scholarships available then we know of right now. There are some questions about a couple players health and could be career threatening. I don't see MD kicking players to the curb (ala SEC teams and Urban Liar), but there is more going on at MSU then any of us can even know. These coaches are paid to recruit and coach, if any of us were at their level or better we would be in the coaching ranks. So I trust MD and his staff more than anyone else on these boards.

  • Apparently Paul Lang is done because of a back injury. So MSU has 4 & possibly 5 spots left. With competition come transfers also, so unless you've got the pulse of what's going on in the depth chart you're just guessing on how many spots there are to fill. The coaches will give a number, then Worthy & Baker leave, a kid/kids hang it up due to injury, another kid/kids see they aren't going to see the field and decide to transfer. The number is somewhat of a moving target.

  • A few things:

    1) Recruit bashing is not going to be tolerated. You all should know better; this kid could be a member of the Spartan family in a few days.

    2) MSU is not taking DTs for immediate PT. There are 4 RS FR DTs, and 3 others (Kittredge, White, Reynolds).

    3) Off of #2, this guy is definitely raw; lived in CA till a year ago and has only been playing American football for a year. Some people have thrown out Kevin Pickelman analogies, but Pickelman came in as a 6'4 240 pound LB prospect and had to learn DT. This guy already plays on the line (3-4 DE plays a position very similar to our 3-tech DTs, just 1 gap over) and is 6'3 275. No way he sees PT till 2014 at the earliest, and by then he'll have 3 years at the training table + 3 years with Coach Gill.

    4) Kid's got great bloodlines; his father's nickname was "Dr. Death" in the CFL.

    5) It looks like there is raw talent there. He was 1st team All-State in his division (6A, which I assume is the biggest division in OR) despite only playing American football in a year

    6) If there's one thing this staff has shown, it's that it can evaluate talent with the best of them. All of MSU's draft prospects this year were 2-stars (Robinson, Foreman), or 3-stars (Cousins, Worthy, Cunningham, Martin, Linthicum) except for 1 (Baker).

    7) This guy wouldn't compete with JJ. JJ is a NT and this guy has 3-tech written all over him. MSU could take both and not have an issue with 2 guys in the same class fighting for the same spot.

Edit: 8) Per Sean, his dad if flying into EL to meet his son there and check it out. Where is Mr. Fennell flying in from? Siberia. To EL. That has BAMF written all over it.

I like the fact that his dad is a billionaire Canadian gold mine mogul who is flying in from Siberia to be with his son on his OV. Did I mention that his father was a CFL star DT nicknamed "Dr. Death"?

    That's ridiculously fun to type.

Edit to add in the Dr. Death part.

  • It shows how this staff is willing to look, listen and act. For staff to fly out to Oregon for a face to face, then fly him here to EL, there must be something special about him.

His dad's story and background are total bonus. Did his dad realize his potential and therefore move him to the US for his senior year to get some exposure?

This is certainly the staff you want coaching you if you have raw talent and need to be coached to your fullest potential.

  • We're not worthy!!!! He seems to have the same result as Jerel. he may not make the tackle but he plugs up a lot of space.
