  • East Xtra: Cox the latest to uphold Jeannette's rich tradition
    HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
    Thursday, September 01, 2011
By Brad Everett, Tri-State Sports & News Service

Since the door shut on his junior season, Jeannette's Demetrious Cox has had everything about his football future open up.

The dazzling highlight tapes and a fine showing at the Nike Combine impressed college coaches. Not long after that, Cox received more than 20 Division I scholarship offers. And one of the highlights of his summer was a trip to the West Coast to compete at a prestigious football camp dubbed -- you guessed it -- The Opening.

But it's at safety where colleges like Cox the most. An all-conference selection last season, Cox (6-1, 192) uses his muscular build and excellent speed to close in on defenders quickly and make plays. It's no wonder why he likes playing the position so much.

"I just love being able to see the whole field and being able to come up and have the advantage," he said. "It's fun to fly around, make contact and be a ballhawk."

  • Jeannette crushes East Allegheny
    By Keith Barnes, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, September 3, 2011

Jeannette coach Roy Hall has been champing at the bit all summer to take the reins off the player he calls his big horse, quarterback Demetrious Cox.

    And Cox didn't disappoint.

He scored touchdowns on his first two carries, threw for another late in the first half and returned a fumble for a fourth, as Jeannette (1-0, 1-0) sprinted out to a 27-point lead early in the second quarter and breezed to a 47-6 victory over East Allegheny at Churchman Stadium in the Interstate Conference opener for both schools. The Jayhawks' defense held East Allegheny to only 27 yards of total offense before the second string came into the game when the 35-point mercy rule went into effect midway through the third quarter.

"The crowd and atmosphere there is crazy on game day," Cox said.

  • Balanced Jeannette rumbles past Laurel
By Sean Meyers, FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, September 10, 2011

Demetrious Cox has the ability to dominate a game by himself, but Friday, Jeannette used a balanced running game to defeat Laurel, 38-12.

Four different players, including Cox, scored rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks. Cox totaled 40 yards on the ground on 10 carries and completed three of his four passing attempts for 24 yards. Junior fullback Jordan Edmunds paced the Jayhawks with 118 yards, including two long touchdown runs.

Jeannette coach Roy Hall liked the balance his team displayed and said Cox did not have any complaints about not touching the ball as much as usual.

"Cox realizes it's a team sport," Hall said. "They (the opponent) can't key on one person when we play like that."

  • Jeannette runs away late from Waynesburg
By Ray Judy, FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, September 17, 2011

Cox and the Jayhawks made big plays at key moments of the game.

With his team clinging to a seven-point lead, Cox rushed for 68 yards on the first two plays after halftime to give Jeannette a 14-0 cushion.

After Jordan Edmunds' 25-yard touchdown run in early in the fourth quarter, Cox scored on runs of 3 and 49 yards late in the game to make Jeannette's win look a little more dominant than it might have been.

  • Dual-threat quarterbacks are in home stretch
    By Kevin Gorman, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Thursday, September 22, 2011

Where Chartiers Valley's Wayne Capers would prefer to be on the receiving end of passes instead of throwing them, Upper St. Clair's Dakota Conwell and Jeannette's Demetrious Cox view playing quarterback as their last hurrah to have the ball in their hands every play.

The trio of WPIAL stars are dual-threat quarterbacks in a different sense, all Division I prospects who will play other positions in college: Conwell has committed to Pitt, which likes him as a linebacker; Cox is a coveted safety with scholarship offers from Pitt, Penn State and Notre Dame, among others; and Capers is being recruited anywhere from safety and outside linebacker to wide receiver, where his father played for the Steelers.

"Playing quarterback, it helps more than it hurts," Cox said. "It helps you see the field. If I throw the ball a certain way or make a bad decision, my coach always says, 'If you were back there on defense, you would have picked that off.' My favorite position is safety. But I want to be the best on the field."

  • Recruit Report: Players talk about Pitt's move to ACC
    Friday, September 23, 2011
    By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

With Pitt moving from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast, the question is whether it will have any effect on football recruiting?

"Recruiting-wise, I don't think it really matters," said Jeannette's Demetrious Cox, a heavily recruited defensive back who has Pitt on his final list of 10 colleges. "I can understand Pitt trying to be a part of whatever is going on with these super conferences. But it doesn't really bother me or mean that much to me, recruiting-wise."

By Sean Meyers, FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, September 24, 2011

Superstar quarterback Demetrious Cox did not play due to injury, but Jeannette still looked strong in a convincing 51-6 victory over Southmoreland on Friday.
Hall hopes to have Cox back next week when his Jayhawks travel to Charleroi, while Southmoreland hopes to rebound at Waynesburg.

  • Jeannette cruises to win over Yough
By Sean Meyers, FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, October 8, 2011

Jeannette scored five first-half touchdowns to cruise to a 49-13 victory over Yough on Friday. With the victory, the Jayhawks remain undefeated on the season (6-0, 5-0 Interstate).

Jeannette used a balanced attack, as Shavonta Craft and Anthony Canady both rushed for two touchdowns. Demetrious Cox completed only three passes, but two of them went for scores, as he totaled 70 yards through the air. Late in the first quarter, Cox completed a screen pass that Jordan Edmunds took 27 yards for a touchdown. Cox also connected with Vaughn Dalzell later in the half for a touchdown.

With the mercy rule in effect for the second-half, many of Jeannette's standouts were rested. Davey Headen, playing in place of Cox at quarterback, scored on a 2-yard sneak in the fourth. Clayton Waldron concluding the scoring for Yough when he caught a 56-yard pass from Eric Baer with 40 seconds left in the game.

It seems like we've really invested a lot of effort trying to get him.
He's on the top of my wishlist right next to 2 of Ohio's best.

IMO he is an absolute MUST GET. We backed off on other S prospects like Nate Smitch, ect. and it seemed to happen after Cox visited campus in the late summer. I figured that might be playing a role in the retreat from other prospects. Last but not least, the fight for J Diggs is an uphill battle.

Cox has been a Plan A guy since visiting for a Junior Day last winter.

Definitely a must get. We aren't getting Diggs, and we aren't recruiting any other true safeties as far as I know.

He is, but he is a corner. Ezra said that Diggs is coming with him, but Diggs has yet to say that himself, so we'll see. I'm one of the guys that believes that, if you can get a kid on campus, then anything can happen. However, Diggs has been a strong Nebraska lean for so long it seems, that we would have to be considered a long, long shot to get him. It's just really hard to get a kid when his good friend (Michael Rose) is already committed to the school he has been already favoring. Who knows though, I wont go as far as saying there is zero chance because anything can happen.

  • Has Diggs already visited Nebraska?
It would be awesome if we could get Robinson and Diggs to visit. Shock Wisky and all of college football... Then if Diggs visits or just watches Nebraska the week we play them and we win that game... That might sway Diggs our way.
Cox, Robinson, Diggs, and Edmondson... That gentlemen is a damn fine secondary class.
Edmondson got it started. Cox could get the ball rolling again with a commit after the UM game.

green_koolaid I think I might have had too much to drink.

Yes, he has already visited Nebraska, and he was also supposed to be back for his second visit this weekend (not 100% sure if it happened). Watching them come back for 27-3 deficit to OSU would have been a hell of a game to be at.
