'12 PA TE/LB J.P. Holtz (Pitt verbal)

  • Former Penn State commit. MSU apparently back in the running.

    Gorman: Coaching carousel's 'collateral damage'
    By Kevin Gorman, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, December 31, 2011

When J.P. Holtz made his college choice in July, the Shaler star pronounced himself a Pennsylvania kid and called it a dream come true to play at Penn State.

What followed has been nothing short of a nightmare, one that forced Holtz to not only reopen the recruiting process but redefine the word commitment. This time, instead of chastising prospects for wavering, we have watched the state's two biggest football programs leave this top WPIAL recruit wondering where he fits in.

Pitt soon pounced, convincing Holtz to take an official visit earlier this month. He was leaning toward picking the Panthers when, three days later, first-year coach Todd Graham slipped out of town to take the Arizona State job.

Luckily for Holtz, he didn't completely cut off other colleges when he made his commitment to Penn State. He has visited Pitt and Purdue and plans to take a trip to Michigan State next month before the Feb. 1 signing day.

Regarded as one of the state's top 10 players by Scout.com, the 6-foot-4, 243-pound Holtz has played every offensive skill position but projects as either a tight end or pass-rushing outside linebacker. Scout.com ranks Holtz the nation's No. 10 tight end, and his combination of soft hands, speed and football sense made him, perhaps, the best all-around football player in the WPIAL, despite pedestrian statistics (337 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, 19 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns).

JP Holtz will visit MSU next weekend

  • Great news. I hope he has a good visit, especially considering our new worries about the TE position.

I think he is going to be a DE at the next level but I hope we get him none the less.

The MSU staff is recruiting Holtz as a TE.

We already have Price and Jones committed, unless one or both of them end up as a DE.

Both Jones and Price will begin their MSU careers as TE's.
MSU's staff has made Holtz a priority recruit as a TE.
This is because Fr. TE Paul Lang's football career is over due to a back injury.

  • Chryst adds Belle Vernon's Rudolph to Pitt staff
By Jerry DiPaola and Dan Stefano, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Saturday, January 7, 2012

Pitt coach Paul Chryst has added Wisconsin tight ends coach Joe Rudolph to his coaching staff.

"He's in, and we're going to announce the staff at some point," Chryst said Friday night while attending the Seneca Valley at Shaler boys' basketball game. He was there to recruit coveted Shaler tight end J.P. Holtz, who plays forward for the Titans.

Chryst would not say what Rudolph's title would be.

"I think we're going to talk about that a little later," he said.

Rudolph, who also served as the Badgers' recruiting coordinator, is the fourth assistant hired by Chryst at Pitt, the third who coached with him at Wisconsin and the second with WPIAL ties. Rudolph is a graduate of Belle Vernon High Schoo

  • Not that it has any indication of Holtz's recruitment, but Pitt is getting wrecked in the first Q of the BBVA Compass Bowl, whatever the hell that is.

Well logically, PSU has no coach and is a mess anyway.

Would you rather play for a back to back BT champion off a bowl win over a good SEC opponent, or Pitt? New coach at a program that can't keep a coach. You wouldn't know whether the guy's going to be driven off or leave for a better offer in a year or two, or be a decent HC (which wouldn't preclude either of the former possibilities at Pitt). The admin at the school must be screwed up too, because the Athletic Dept. seems to be in constant turmoil.

Penn State has a coach, of course he won't be actually working there for a while. They are also terminating most of the current staff so there is no one to do recruiting. Any way the Penn State ship has sailed as far as Holtz is concerned.

Pit may be a bigger problem. I think they got it right this time and Chryst comes off as the opposite of a slick snake oil salesman. He is bringing the tight end coach with him from Wisconsin. He also looking to concentrate on Western PA. From the Post-Gazzette.

He said he wants to focus his recruiting efforts on solidifying the home base in Western Pennsylvania but they will also recruit in some of the surrounding states, particularly Ohio, as well as continue to go into Florida to try and find some players.

  • Holtz named to Big 33 roster.

Hopewell's Rushel Shell and Montour's Julian Durden will be Pennsylvania's running backs in the Big 33 Football Classic — two of the 12 WPIAL and City League players chosen for the June 16 all-star game at Hersheypark Stadium that pits some of the state's top players against their Ohio counterparts.

The Pennsylvania roster, selected by the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association was announced Sunday.

Other local selections include Shaler's J.P. Holtz (TE), Upper St. Clair's Ian Park (OL), Woodland Hills' Shakim Alonzo (WR) and Mike Caprara (LB), Penn Hills' Corey Jones (WR) and Treyvon Hester (DL), Erie McDowell's Greg Garmon (ATH), Central Catholic's Anthony Nixon (DB), Allderdice's Tyrique Jarrett (DL) and McKeesport's Terrell Williams (DL).

You really think he'd want to go to Pitt? They chased Walt Harris after some good seasons, hired and chased the stache, Heywood for five minutes while he was assaulting his wife, had Graham for a year and now Chryst. So this is the 5th coach since 2004. Even if you don't count "Heywood, the hire of the century", four coaches in the last 7 years is quite the revolving door. Seems to me recruits should be careful they don't get too close, lest they get nailed by the latest coach to fly outta there.panic

  • Anyone hearing anything. As far as I have heard he was the only recruit this weekend since he had to juggle around his basketball schedule and couldn't be here next week for the big weekend.

Pitt is about 8-9 miles from Pitt. It is a lot easier for a Pitt coach to get there than an MSU coach.

Looks like he scheduled the visit to MSU last Saturday because State College is a non-conference game.

Pitt recruits embrace new football coach Chryst's demeanor
    By Jerry DiPaola, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Monday, January 16, 2012

For the past quarter-century, Neil Gordon has watched college football coaches stroll into his high schools like there should be trumpets blaring and confetti tossed at their feet.

"The assistants walked in ahead of him like it's an entourage, and he's the king," said Gordon, a longtime Penn Hills coach who this week resigned from coaching at Shaler.

Then, Paul Chryst showed up at a Shaler basketball game Jan. 6 to meet with tight end recruit J.P. Holtz. If Chryst's face hadn't been in the newspapers and on TV after he was hired as Pitt's coach Dec. 21, he could have been mistaken for just another fan.

Shaler basketball coach Paul Holszhu didn't know Chryst was there until he was introduced to him after the game.

"He cares about the players," Holtz said. "He puts the players first."

Holtz remains uncommitted and planned a trip to Michigan State this weekend. Nonetheless, he was excited that Chryst came to watch him play basketball, tweeting the news before the game and, then, scoring 18 points — 10 above his average.

Said Holszhu: "I should have football coaches come to every one of our games."
