'13 OH S Jalyn Powell (MSU verbal)

  • Had to look up this speed everyone was talking about, holy crap! And the video's aren't sped up at all?

    Metal_Sparty

  • Jalyn is somewhat of a Spartan legacy. Former Spartan Chris L. Rucker is his cousin.

  • Watch the film. This was a very very good get. Welcome to MSU Jalyn. I expect I'll see you play in the Rose Bowl.

    Green n Mean

  • Buckeye fans liked him a fair amount.

  • Noticed somene had his 40 time at 4.82, most inacurate thing I've ever seen. This dude is crazy fast. Hopefully that's what has kept others from lasering in on him. Their loss, our gain.

  • I went on Bucknuts; they really think MSU got a steal here. Said he was injured during his JR year and if JT was the coach he'd have an OSU offer. Best thing they told me was that Powell has great tackling form and instincts. That's music to my ears.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

IMO they shouldn't even post 40 times for high school kids. They are meaningless and suspect nearly every time.

I agree. Every HS coach hand times his kids at 4.3seconds. The average time over a 5 year period for WR's at the NFL combine is 4.53 and CB/FS is 4.51. I thought we looked faster than everyone on the field last year and that's really all that matters.

  • Here is my analysis of Jalyn Powell :

S Jalyn Powell (6'-1", 185 lbs.) - He is the type of big, fast, versatile athlete that the MSU staff loves to coach. He played all over the field both on offense and defense for his HS team; S, CB, LB, WR, RB, Wildcat QB. Physically, he will remind you of his cousin, former Spartan Chris L. Rucker. He is an excellent tackler with good defensive instincts and he's a big time hitter. He shows good ball skills when the ball is in the air both as a DB and receiver. He can return KO's and punts and has big play ability and is a smooth, long strider with excellent speed. He will begin his MSU career as a S but could also project to CB at the next level.

Wow, you're right about the instincts. 21 other players on the field and he seems to know where every single one of them is. He ran where he saw blocks, he covered space on the outside when he saw his teammates had the inside covered, etc. Not to mention some freak athleticism. Could he see PT from day 1? We have to find a place for him, don't we?

(In regards to Dantonio recruiting the secondary)
You can get a good look at a T-Bone by sticking your head up a bulls ass... But wouldn't you rather take Dantonio's word for it!

    Great pick up coachd

Now, I could be wrong, but isn't a long stride bad for CB's? Usually shorter strides mean they can change direction more quickly and lose less speed doing so. Not saying it's a bad thing necessarily, seems like it'd be good for a deep threat WR or a saftey or something. Not saying this is true, but it's what I could've sworn I had heard it.

You are right about a long stride being bad for short term acceleration, but it doesn't seem to affect Jalyn's ability. He seems to be shot out of a gun.

What was Duane's take on Powell?

green_koolaidJaylyn Powell referenced in post about a 95 rated 4-star DB headed to play for B1G Legends division runners up.

    From Duane Longs website.

"Before Friday I was arguing that Warren Harding's Jalyn Powell is closer to Thomas than the experts might think. After seeing them both in person, I feel that it is Thomas that is just behind Powell. Powell is a ball hawk and actually the better hitter. I'd like to word this in a specific way. Dymonte Thomas has the higher ceiling, which in large part is what recruiting and the scouting of recruits is all about. But, not only do I feel that Jalyn Powell is the better safety today, I believe he is more likely to reach his ceiling. Powell is a natural gamer and I don't think that that is something that is easy to learn. Make no mistake, I would much rather see him in Scarlet than in Blue, but now I have him (Thomas) as number 2 instead of 1 for Ohio's safety class."

"Now to the newest north-bound talent in the state of Ohio; Dymonte Thomas. He is just a great looking athlete. He's long and lean and looks like a dream for a collegiate strength coach. He is so explosive out of his breaks with the ball in his hands. Most, however, like him best on defense as a safety. I was of that opinion going in and haven't changed having seen him in person. Getting in and out of breaks is huge for a safety and he has the tools. Playing outside linebacker right now, Marlington dropped him into coverage for the majority of the first half. He was taking good angles and being an athlete covering ground quickly. This shows me he has taken to his coaching well. He failed to get enough depth on several occasions with nothing in front of him and the ball went deep over his head. This shows me he's still a step back on natural understanding and instincts. In the run game he seemed a step behind on recognition and wasn't making an impact until they started bringing him off the edge in run blitzes later in the game. Before Friday I was arguing that Warren Harding's Jalyn Powell is closer to Thomas than the experts might think. After seeing them both in person, I feel that it is Thomas that is just behind Powell. Being a long strider at CB isn't necessarily a negative. His cousin Chris L. Rucker was a long strider and played CB very well. The real key to playing CB is having flexible hips and being able to turn and run with WR's. Jalyn's real asset is his overall speed which as a S would allow him to cover a lot of ground quickly in the secondary, either in run support or in pass coverage. One thing about long striders, the farther they run, the faster they get.
The ultimate long strider was Randy Moss.

Maybe I put too much faith in Duane Long's assessment of Ohio talent, but I have found his evaluation and comments regarding Ohio prospects to be solid. He just doesn't look at a players star rating and state that's the level of their ability. He judges talent and is not affraid to say if a player is overrated or underrated.

He had a lot of nice things to say about 2012 recruit Benny McGowan, indicating that he was one of the better offensive linemen that he wished OSU had offered.
