'13 ON OT David Knevel (Nebraska verbal)

  • Badger fans expected Knevel to be in Madison today - and I think many expected him to commit to Wisky on that visit. The Wisconsin writers are probably trying to soften the blow to their fans.

  • Welp, I was wrong. Looks like they had good reason to put Wisky as his leader. Don't understand why we didn't offer. It's not like we have more than two tackles on our board.

Maybe the staff didn't like what they saw? Granted the Wisconsin offer means a lot but he just may not be what we were looking for in an OT.

Coach D and the staff want to do a thorough evaluation of Knevel's film before they consider offering him.
I've been saying right along that Dennis Finley is the OT they really want.

CBD. Why do we continually struggle to recruit in the trenches? We have whiffed on so many kids, it's absurd.

For MSU to hang their hat on a Cass Tech kid is risky beyond doubt.

well Finley was on campus today too, so perhaps he has given them the thumbs up and they know he's going to commit?

OL and DL are the most difficult positions to recruit. There are lots of big kids out there but there just aren't that many out there who project to be successful at the D-1 level, unlike WR, DB, RB, even LB where there are always lots of athletes available every year.
The top OL and DL prospects get snapped up quickly. Number one you need to win consistently, number two you need to have a track record for sending OL and DL to the NFL, and number three you have to establish brand recognition with HS kids.

    Not now.

  • Michigan State did not offer Brantford (Ont.) Pauline Johnson Collegiate offensive lineman David Knevel today. The past two days Knevel visited Michigan State with his mom, Michelle Knevel, but Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said that they are still evaluating the process with Knevel.

"Today David and I sat in team and position meetings and were on the field this afternoon watching the first practice," Michelle Knevel told Spartan Tailgate ""Just before leaving Coach Dantonio spoke with us again, he indicated they would be continuing to evaluate David, review film and would keep in touch with us."

The 6-foot-8 ½ and 298-pound Knevel holds offers from Missouri, Purdue, and Wisconsin. Knevel is receiving interest from Michigan State, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Alabama.

  • right, wrong - the Highlander reference trumps everything else ;)

  • Knevel camped at Iowa this summer but did not receive an offer from the Dean of OL development Kirk Ferentz. .

    mandarich79

  • I agree Madarich - I see this as a situation where MSU simply isn't sold on Knevel. I don't think Finley has anything to do with not offering.

    zombieonidas

  • This should tell you that we should trust our coaches and offers they extend. We have passed up a three or four linemen this season that all have impressive offer lists. The oline is a position of need, and it does not appear that coach D panicks or takes unwarrented risks. The fact that he has passed on offering these recruits should placate some peoples consternation about Kieler, Fennel, Conklin, etc. A reply should go to the 2013 recruiting thread. If Knevel receives an offer, it is warrented. Again, trust in the D

  • I do agree that we need to trust the staff, but the fact still remains that we need at least one big time tackle in this class. I would love to think Finley is ready to commit, but the damn Cass Tech thing is always in the back of my head and I can't be too sure. I also don't see a lot of other tackles who are overly interested in us either. Gotta get that kid Knighton from New Jersey in for a visit soon!

Thats why it makes a lot of sense to take numbers at OL every year. While all the wr's were taking look like playmakers, MSU has an overabundance of wr's. Cant imagine enough touches fpr all of them to be satisfied.

I would rather take more OL than WR.

  • The wisconsin board is hilarious right now. Says we didn't offer because we don't know how to develop raw talent.

Staff is only going to take players they feel can contribute, not offer simply to build numbers. They had targets that went elsewhere and the staff is sticking to their standards, so unless they find some under the radar talent a la Fennell, they ain't taking numbers.

  • It's probably far less complicated than all this - I'd guess that MSU simply isn't sold on Knevel. Period. No moving parts. They simply aren't sold on him as a prospect (yet?).
