'13 PA ATH Alex Anzalone (Notre Dame verbal)

  • Landing Breneman was the first big coup for O’Brien, but missing out on Kugler, who had an offer on the table from the Lions, highlights the most important issue for the coach moving forward — keeping Pennsylvania talent in Pennsylvania.

The state’s 2013 class is top-heavy, with Breneman and Kugler leading the way, but the rest are still weighing their options. That includes Central Valley wide receiver Robert Foster, West Catholic running back David Williams and Wyomissing linebacker Alex Anzalone.

All three have offers from Penn State, as well as at least three other Big Ten schools. O’Brien’s NFL ties will work best with luring tight ends like Breneman, or quarterbacks like Hackenberg. For the other positions, he’ll have to work a little harder.

Penn State Recruiting: Top 5 in-state targets still on the board
Mar 15th at 6:42 am by Tim Tolley

When Bill O’Brien was hired, he said that he wanted to recruit the state of Pennsylvania heavily and get the core of the team from within a “300 mile radius.” Last Friday, O’Brien took a step in the right direction, landing 5 star tight end, Adam Breneman from central Pa. Of the 4 commitments Penn State has, Adam is the only one from in the state.
Who are the 5 MOST IMPORTANT Penn State recruits left on the board? I’m glad you asked!

    1. LB Alex Anzalone
Another BIG position of need for Penn State is LB. Oddly enough, Linebacker U has brought in just one linebacker in each of the last 2 classes. At a position that usually fields 3 at a time, that could become an issue in a few years. Penn State needs to bring in a strong class of LBs and they need to start with in-state stud, Alex Anzalone. Alex has offers from Stanford, OSU, Alabama, USC, Florida and around 25 other schools. Keeping him home would be huge for Bill O’Brien in his quest to bring in the top in-state talent.

  • I love how we're never listed as one of their offers in spite of being a top 3 defense. Unbelievable.

  • Surprized at how well Obrien is doing at Penn St recruiting wise. The scandal and Jopa almost seem like distant memories now. Penn St could become a recruiting monster again. The 2013 class is showing early signs of a potential top 10 class.

It really appears that the Penn State football program has put the scandal behind them. Most of the coaching staff is new and the investigation is focusing on the University and AD administration. I have said before and I know this sounds cold. The best thing Paterno did after being fired is die quickly. The funeral was widely covered i Pennsylvania and seemed to be very cathartic. There is even a movement to name the field in Beaver Stadium Paterno Field.

Anzalone lives near Reading which is traditionally strong Penn State recruiting territory. Pitt focuses on Western Pa and Temple and Rutgers have never been much competition for Penn State.

I see PSU just picked up a 4 star OLman today with a great offer sheet. Thats 5 4 stars out of 5 recruits. They really have some momentum going. The B1G seems to be on a real upswing recruiting wise.

Brendan Mahon, newest member of the Penn State 2013 recruiting class: "I love it there."

It was rumored that New Jersey offensive lineman Brendan Mahon was close to committing to Penn State at the February 18th Junior Day, but he left without giving the pledge. Not long after, he scheduled a return visit to State College for St. Patrick's Day weekend. Unlike last month, this time he left campus as a future Nittany Lion.

Brendan gave his commitment to Penn State and head coach Bill O'Brien last night.

So what does this have to do with Alex Anzalone again?

It's supporting the earlier discussion that the Sandusky scandal appears to have no effect on Penn State's recruiting, contrary to the assumptions of virtually everyone just a few months ago. This involves Anzalone since he lives in PA and Penn State is recruiting him.

  • Top In-State Recruits Plan Return Visits to PSU
Apr 2nd, 2012 at 5:50 am by Tim Tolley

After hosting a handful of recruits last weekend, it looks like April recruiting is ready to pick up where March left off.

I recently found out that Pennsylvania’s top linebacker, Alex Anzalone, will be coming to Penn State on April 14th for a visit. This will be Alex’s 3rd trip to Happy Valley in the past two months.

Anzalone was in Columbus on Saturday for his 2nd visit to Ohio State and left Sunday for a tour of California (USC, UCLA, Stanford). He has recently been to Florida, Notre Dame and Virginia. I don’t have a good feel for how long Alex plans to take, but the fact that he already has a visit scheduled to Penn State AFTER all these others should make Nittany Lion fans feel pretty good. I think Penn State is in pretty good shape here and I wouldn’t be surprised if Anzalone at least narrows down his choices following this west coast trip.

  • Bye Anzalone...although I never thought we had a shot, it's always going to be tough pulling kids from Pennsylvania that Penn State wants.

Penn State recruiting: LB Alex Anzalone set to visit this weekend
    Published: Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 6:55 AM
    By Tim Tolley

Army All-American linebacker Alex Anzalone has been across the country taking visits and will be at Penn State this weekend for the third time in two months.

Alex recently visited Virginia, Ohio State, Florida, Stanford, UCLA and USC. He was at the Penn State Junior Day, then returned in March after a visit to Michigan fell through.

Alex plays a combination of LB and Safety in high school, which leads to some diverse film.[Bandit]

  • Alex Anzalone has decommitted from Ohio State, considering Penn State
    Published: Friday, May 04, 2012, 4:52 PM
    By Tim Tolley

Wyomissing, PA linebacker Alex Anzalone has confirmed to me that he is no longer committed to Ohio State.

Alex committed during his visit to the OSU Spring game on April 21st, just one week after visiting Penn State for the 3rd time in two months. Alex wouldn't divulge the reason for the decommit, saying only that "There's a reason. Trust me."

Anzalone also confirmed to me that Penn State is most certainly back in the running for his commitment.

It was my assessment that Penn State was one of the top three choices for Anzalone prior to his Buckeye commitment, with OSU and Florida also in the running. I'll be sure to track this situation closely and update accordingly.
