'14 MI DE Malik McDowell (MSU offer)

He is not going to play hoops. Come on.

No, but he may think he will. That more or less wrapped up Dion Sims for MSU.

  • He's a MAC quality basketball player - you don't think he'd enjoy walking on to a final four/potential national title winning basketball team? Cause that sounds pretty freaking amazing to me... and all he has to do is talk to Drake Harris about winning titles in both sports. Izzo has been talking to McDowell - and Tom Izzo LOVES having football players walk on.

I think for a top football player it is much better to spend January through March in football off season workouts. How good can you really be if you are playing another sport for 3-4 months a year? I realize what Izzo is doing and it isn't a dumb strategy, but the odds that McDowell would be good enough to contribute and make it worthwhile is very slim.

  • i think he doesn't care what you think and that he will do what he wants!! let the kids play ball if they wanna play 2 sports let them! that is an advantage to us!! #GOGREEN fishing

I'm not up to date on McDowell, but seems I read that he's 6'6 (legit 6'6?) and in the 280 range. He's probably going to get heavier as he's still growing, and some think he might move to DT. I just don't see how effective a 6'6 small forward could be if he packing 280+ pounds.

If I could reverse engineer things, I'd love to see 6'6 Branden Dawson at DE. He is lightning quick and can jump out of the gym. McDowell will never be that nimble, and very well could be best suited as a year-round DT.

Please, oh please, I hope Izzo isn't really recruiting this kid. It will make MSU look that much more desirable if he has the opportunity to travel the country, stay in elite physical condition, learn from and be guided by one of the most respected coaches nationwide, and have the chance to put basketball championship rings on his right hand and football championship rings on his left. Not to mention Izzo is the strongest recruiter in the midwest. Say it ain't so!

This is what I hear when you post.

Frankly, if he keeps growing, McDowell might turn out to be a stud OT.

  • And yes - Izzo is an awesome recruiter ... a reality that has depressed UM basketball fans for well over the last decade. Sarcasm is funny ... Until its true ... Then it's just kind of sad ... Feel free to contact McDowell with your opinions on how he should approach his future athletic endeavors - I'm sure he's waiting for your advice ... ;)

Mcdowell is very nimble for a big guy which is why people are already saying he could be the number 1 prospect in the country. Playing basketball in the off season could keep him from gaining to much weight and help him remain a defensive end it could also help him with his explosiveness change of direction etc

he.would probably be an undersized atleast height wise, power forward.

He might not ever play a lot of minutes but he would probably be a very good interior defender and rebounder.

At the very least he would be a great asset to the scout team.

I love the comparison but barkley played between 252 and 260 pounds. Malik McDowell is already 295.

  • Dude this has nothing to with McDowell being good enough to actually play basketball at MSU - I'm not good enough and I'd love to walk on to a national title winner. Why wouldn't he? Football player Aaron Alexander walked on - you're next question should be "who?" ...exactly. Izzo loves football players and McDowell is much better at basketball than most.

Look I'm not downing it at all. Whatever gives a better chance of getting him to msu is all I care about.

He may not be. Just saw a listing of his height and weight somewhere.

I would say the Round Mound of rebound was over 250 when he was at Auburn.

Sour grapes. You don't have Izzo and we do, tough. If Izzo tells a football recruit that he will have a fair shot at walking on a making the team he means it. Just because one team in Michigan lies to recruits about playing time and their positions, doesn't mean we do.

I couldn't speak to that. However, my wife ran into him in hotlanta 10 years ago and snagged a pic with him and I can promise you he was pushing 300 elbows.

Combine verified height/weight of 6'6 292 lbs at the Rivals 5 Star challenge this past weekend. A number of recruiting guys mentioned how impressive he looked, not a lot of bad weight, etc. Hard to believe since I swear the kid was 260 just a couple months ago, but thats about as official as you are going to get from a high school recruit. Said he wanted to get back down to 280 by the season.

Its called two a days. I weighed a lean 170 in high school, but after August camp played the rest of football season at 159. Imagine the potential weightloss for a near 300 pounder in August heat. Even if he is as healthy as most seem to think.

Sir Chrales lost weight after his rookie year. Moses Malone told him he was fat and out of shapelol

Here's the Scout drills film. This is the performance that caused all the national pundits to get erections over him.

His shorts in that video are awful, and hopefully not a sign.
