'14 OH ATH Dareian Watkins (Northwestern verbal)

  • He has a 93 ranking, as a 4 star, ranked 119th nationally. Its not just the recognition. I just watched his highlight video. Three observations:

    1)There was a guy on the video screaming like crazy. It got weird.
    2) He is actually a pretty good quarterback.
    3) He broke alot of tackles. Partially because of his speed and elusiveness; and partially because of the level of competition (alot of broken/lazt tackles)

    This guy is not a recruit to take lightly.

    Sounds like they're recruiting him as a WR first, but if his height and weight are correct, he could project to S/LB as well.

    FWIW, he plays QB for his HS right now.

  • He visits Northwestern on March 9th to spend the weekend with the team. He will visit Michigan State soon. I think May 1st is a tentative date to make some key visits and hopefully make a well informed decision. There are some good pictures of Dareian and his teammate (God-brother) LaCario Davison during a couple MSU visits on their facebook pages.

    Not to down NU because coach Fitz is an amazing guy but I'd consider it a let down by the staff losing a kid like Watkins to NU.

    MSU has lost guys to Northwestern before. I wouldn't be totally shocked, but it appears MSU is sitting well and is going to get serious consideration as he makes his decision.

    What is NW recruiting Watkins as? If they are recruiting Watkins as a QB, I think that could give them a leg up. Regardless, as it has been mentioned, MSU will receive a serious look for his services.

  • Watkins is a superb ATH. He plays QB, WR, S and is a dynamic punt returner for his HS team.
    As a QB, he will remind you of Demetrious Cox.
    As a WR, he will remind you of Aaron Burbridge.
    As a S, he will remind you of Kurtis Drummond only faster.
    As a punt returner, he doesn't have Keshawn Martin type speed (few do) but he is fearless and has excellent field vision and can break long returns.
    MSU may have a slight lead for him over Louisville and NW.
    Note : NW is recruiting him as a dual threat QB.

    I honestly think the pitch to Watkins probably contains the ability to have a look there too. If we took him as an athlete we can focus on more of a pro QB and he's there getting a look at more than one position. It's hard to see a downside to having a kid like this. Would be a huge get.

    +1 thank you for the information. I thought the QB position was held in higher regard by Watkins. Glad to hear otherwise, as it helps our chances. The kid is an outstanding athlete with a high ceiling. I will be extremely happy with landing Watkins. Dareian we want you here donning the G&W!

The MSU coaching staff looks remarkably similar to the staff his father was a fan of at OSU. If you read Dareian's past comments you can get an idea of what he is looking for.

    1. A football program with great fan support and active in the community. 2. He prefers WR (MSU offered as WR). 3. A place family can see him play. 4. His favorite coach of all time was JIM Tressel.

    I am family, I will try not to step on Dareian's toes or put words in his mouth. Dareian has a very difficult time with the idea of disapointing any coaches. I think that is why he wants to decide this spring.
