  • I've known and coached Kyle since he was a HS Fr. He's a great kid from a good family with a good work ethici both on the field and in the classroom. He will give MSU a fair look and will be very deliberate throughout the recruiting process.
His family are osu fans but he will make his own decision.
Of course, I'll extoll the virtues of MSU to him without being too pushy, LOL.

    Well, then. It's settled.

You're responsible for making sure he signs an LOI to Michigan State in 2014. Good luck! :)

His father also told him to try to put aside his feelings of being a fan of any team when making a decision. "I liked watching them on TV" is not nearly as important as feeling like you've got a good fit with the coaches and players.

"..have been a Buckeye fan since I was little. Despite that, it won't affect my decision because I am looking for the best fit for myself." (from an interview on another site)

I'm an unpaid Assistant Football Coach @ Lancaster, OH HS for my friend, former NFL RB, Rob Carpenter.
I've coached both of Rob's sons, Bobby (osu) and Kyle (OH U) and LB Luke Roberts who signed with osu in their 2012 class. Luke was down to MSU and osu but his family are osu fans and that eventually was his choice. Anyway, I tried and Luke is a great kid. osu got a good one.
I'll be watching Kyle Trout's progress this season but I don't coach him, I coach the LB's.

Luke attended MSU's summer camp and really liked MSU and the coaches. The staff told Luke they liked his camp performance and they would get back to him about an offer.
I knew that MSU was only going to take 2 LB's in 2012 and they already had Riley Bullough's commit and they were pretty certain that Jamal Lyles was going to commit. I was told that if Jamal didn't commit, they were going to offer Luke. Jamal did commit and Luke wasn't offered by MSU.
He then went to osu's camp and they offered him. He asked me if I thought MSU would offer him and I told him it looked like MSU was full @ LB. Then he committed to osu.
MSU was also in contact with Rob's son Kyle but I said that realistically I didn't think Kyle was a B-10 level player. MSU didn't offer him and he accepted a scholarship to OH U and is doing very well in the MAC.
Lancaster HS is a traditional osu pipeline, going all the way back to QB Rex Kern.
Kyle Trout is a B-10 level player but it won't be easy for MSU to pull him away from osu.

nice - I remember the Carpenter kid. I was actually hoping he'd walk on at MSU. Thanks for the info. I had read that Roberts was excellent at MSU's camp, too.

Kyle Carpenter could have been a preferred walk-on at MSU but he decided to take the full ride @ OH U. It was a very good decision by him. In hind sight, there just wasn't going to be any PT for him at MSU.

  • On the OSU boards, they make it sound like if they offer Trout, it would take minutes before he would commit... On a side note, Bill did a hot list for '14 for OSU, and only 3 out of the top 25 were from the state of Ohio.

  • CBD, you keep saying Kyle Carpenter. I think you mean Nate as Nathan Carpenter is the one at Ohio U.

Sorry, I just seem to have Kyle in my mind. Yes, it's Nathan Carpenter. It's Hell to get old. Thankfully, the mind is the 1st thing to go, LOL.

Kyle is just starting to grow into his frame. He's about 6'-5.5" and 270-275 lbs. now. He will continue to grow as he matures and he has the frame to get much bigger. His agility and athleticism are already obvious. He looks like a future left OT at the next level. He has been working on his footwork and that will continue to improve throughout his HS career. He has a good work ethic and is always working to improve his technique.
Mike Tressel is his main recruiter for MSU.

  • Kyle is looking forward to visiting MSU. He is excited to be in Spartan Stadium to be in the atmosphere of the big rivalry night game vs. ND.
If MSU beats ND it will be even better. He says he will be rooting for MSU that night.
He is hoping to receive a MSU offer when he visits and says it would be an honor for him to be offered by MSU.
I think MSU will extend him an offer when he visits.
There's a long way to go in his recruitment but MSU has a chance with him and I think this visit will lay some groundwork for MSU with him.

That's great to hear. Do you have a good feel for how Urban Meyer is viewed by HS coaches down in Ohio right now? Do they like him? Do they think he is paying adequate attention to in-state players? Has he made any enemies, or is the support pretty unanimous? Just curious.
