2011 Michigan State commit Joel Heath Highlight

I was impressed with Joel Heath. He was always such a raw prospect. He was a dicey offer from the Big Five. Michigan State may have stole one.

Couldn't find a thread for Joel Heath so I put this here. Yeah, I'd say Coach D knows what he is doing.

  • CBD, any chance we finally see Heath this year? Or will we have to wait another? I know Shalique has been a beast, so just wondering where Heath fits in. The coaches were raving about him initially.

Joel had some injury problems last year but did get some limited reps on the Scout Team.
Hopefully, he will be ready to play in the Green & White Game.
Joel is a good athlete who can really run for his size. Although he was recruited as a DE, he could get some reps at DT. The staff just needs to see more of him on the field.

  • I admit to basically having no clue about what I'm watching, but did anyone else think he looked slow off the line/slow in general? Seemed powerful, and big, but not all that quick off the snap/in the chase.

In those highlights, that was Joel's 1st season playing DE when he was a HS Jr.. Before that he had always played DT.
His technique has improved considerably since then.

Heath's speed may be deceiving. Joel needs to work on his explosion but has long strides with his 6'6' frame. If I am not mistaken, Heath ran a 4.8 when attending our Prospect Camp in the summer of 2010.

CBD, I was high on Heath when he committed and still am, but was wondering if you think he will still make an impact in the years to come (if able to stay healthy)?

We'll see this year. He's 6'5 - 6'6 270ish right now and has always been described as "raw". Figure you won't see a ton of him till '13 because MSU returns all 4 of it's DEs in '12, as well as Tyler Hoover. Gives State the luxury to develop him; he'll probably be in the rotation in '13 and contend for a starting spot in '14, as a RS JR.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Joel probably won't see a lot of PT in 2012. The injury problems have slowed his development. He is a big raw boned athlete with good size and size potential who could really come on in 2013.
In that MSU summer Elite Camp in 2010, Joel and Lawrence Thomas really put on a show with their athleticism in all the drills. It was like they were both competing that day for who was the best big athlete in camp.
Joel ran a 4.69 forty and LT ran a 4.63 forty that day.

Ahh! That's the number I was looking for. I knew it was impressive. Thank you cbd & rocky for quick responses, figured the chances were slim this year, fingers crossed the kid has better luck with injuries.

Health looks like a 3-4 DE to me. He needs to get stronger though but he certainly has the frame to do it.

    I agree...or move inside in a 4-3

That's really Knox's future. They have very similar frames, though Heath was more an SDE and Knox a DT. Both were considered raw. I hope Knox's injury isn't chronic, because MSU could use him in the near future. State needs 1 of the '11 DTs to be in the rotation as a RS FR.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
