Breakdown By Position For The Remaining 2013 Scholarships

  • Here are the positions MSU is looking to fill with the remaining 2013 scholarships :

    QB - 1
RB - 0 or 1 (The staff would take an elite level RB like David Willaims. Otherwise, they are done @ RB.
WR - 1 or 0 (The staff would like an elite level WR)
TE - 1 (The staff may look to take 2 depending on how things develop @ the TE position this Fall)
    OT - 2
    OG - 0
DT - 0 or 1 (The staff would take an elite level DT. Otherwise, they won't sign a DT in 2013)
    DE - 2
    MLB - 0
    OLB - 1
S - 1 (The staff would like a prototype SS in this class)
    CB - 1

MSU needed DTs to step up along with White this past season. As it stands, MSU does not need a DT recruit in the '13 class.

Here's why: if you figure it takes 2-3 years to develop a DT, you'd need the '13 kids to start contributing in 2015, their RS Soph years.

In 2015, here's what MSU's DT situation looks like (all red-shirts):

    NT: Ramondo (SR), Knox (SR)

3-tech: Clemons (SR), Scarpinato (SR), Fennell (JR)

Now, MSU needs 2-3 DTs in the '14 class, but that should be a bigger class overall.

People forget that there are 4 RS FR DTs and 1 true FR in the program. In a low-# class like '13, MSU has to be hyper selective.

FWIW, if MSU went on the high end of all the positions above (i.e., took "1" when the option was "0-1"), State would have 17 kids in this class. I think that's too many. Unless David Williams wants to be a Spartan, I think RB is done.

State absolutely needs 2 DEs and 2 OTs in this class.

Not sure if a CB is needed, especialy if Shelton plays the position. MSU did take 2 CBs in '11 and 2 CBs in '12.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

    Breakdown makes sense to me.

I think looking at that list and considering the depth chart, to me the success of this class is going to be getting talent at RB, TE, OT and even DE.

RB - appears to be set already, but losing Caper and possibly Bell this year would leave a lot of unproven talent at the position. That could change this year if Hill (and to extent Langford) get some meaningful experience, but I think we're going to see mostly Bell and Caper for another year. Note: Haven't heard much of David Williams, is MSU still recruiting him hard/still in the picture?

TE - Beyond Sims, there's a lot of question marks here. I think with MSU's offense, it's important to have a play-making TE a la Linthicum and Gantt. Sims has another year or two (likely two IMO) and while MSU inked two TE's last class, I think there's still some room to build depth and talent at the position.

OT - IMO the most important position to recruit period. There's some talent there already, but with how OL develops, it is critical to continually stock up on talented tackles. MSU missed on some of their targets early this year, but there's still some talent to be had out there in Norman, Gray, Klepal, Johnson ect. that MSU can recruit.

DE - Similar to OT, I think a successful team keeps a steady stream of talent at this position. There's some real talent waiting in the wings here behind Gholston and Rush (who already have made names from themselves obviously) and it needs to continue to be here. Seems MSU sits very well with a few highly rated guys.

  • Right now MSU will have 7 DT's on the 2013 Roster, possibly 8 if Tyler Hoover is granted a 6th year of eligibility on a medical appeal. You can only play 2 DT's at a time. DT is not a major need in the 2013 class with limited scholarships available. MSU will take 2 DT's in the 2014 class.
In today's college game, with all the spread offenses, you can never have enough coverage CB's. The MSU staff wants a coverage corner in the 2013 class. They will be selective and here are the top CB's on their recruiting board right now.
AZ, Cole Luke - Already has 15 offers from all over the USA including MSU. Will be tough to pull him out of the West.
OH, Darian Hicks - MSU is his current leader. He really wants an O$U offer but that isn't going to happen even though they will continue to slow play him. He also wants a UM offer which may or may not happen.
IL, Jalen Banks - Was at MSU's Jr. Day on Feb. 25th. Has stated that he wants to visit MSU again. He may be extended an offer if he visits.
OH, Caleb Day - Heard that the Uban legend pulled his offer and made it "conditional" when he was named HC. O$U wants him to attend their summer camp to see if his offer becomes committable. MSU hasn't offered but would like him to attend summer camp.
OH, Reon Dawson - Hasn't been offered by MSU at this time.
Note : R. J. Shelton will not be a CB. The staff likes his explosiveness and big play ability on offense.

  • Focusing on DE for a minute....we lost out on Pittman, then scrambled -- and lost -- on JaMichael Winston. Seems like DE is a critical need this class. Curious on your take for early odds on Elijah Daniel, Tracy Sprinkle and AJ Natter.

Sprinkle just got a tOSU offer. I believe they offered him as a DT though . . .

I know Natter enjoyed his visit to MSU, but it's hard to pull him out of WI.

Daniel I have a good feeling about, but nothing to back that up lol

  • I really like WI, DE Alec James. He is down to MSU and Wisc. It would be a real coup for MSU to pull him out of WI.
Spartan legacy DE Kevin Robbins, Jr. also is high on MSU.

Hope you're right about Daniel. I think he's a better prospect than Pittman, and perhaps better than Adolphus Washington. The nice thing is, we have a vacancy coming up at DE for him to step right into. :)

I think Daniel is originally from the south and his brother went south and played for Georgia. I kinda have a good feeling about him also but I think he is going to end up in the SEC when its all done.

I dont feel good about Natter or James out of Wisc. though. THink they both stay instate.

How many DE's does Wisky plan on taking?

  • Speaking of Defensive ends. There is an article on rivals on Rueben Dunbar out of Chicago, he currently has us as his leader. That is great news, however he said that we are the only school he has visited thus far and he is taking more visits (including msu again). I really like his tape and would be a big time get out of a state we NEED to recruit well in.

Can't imagine too many with the size of their class.

From the looks of their depth chart, they're only losing one DE and already have 1 DE in the fold for 2013 (Watt).

That said, maybe they make room? I don't know, doesn't appear they'd need 3 DE's in this class from the looks of their chart, but maybe they have guys projecting to different positions.

Note: Keep in mind, they have an offer out to Chikwe Obasih as well. I can't imagine they'd have room for Watt, Obasih, Natter and James.

Without question need to get a kid from Illinois. He does look really good. Could turn into one of those kids you land and don't pay enough attention to and then all of the sudden you start hearing a lot of noise about his performance on the practice team. I kind of forgot about RJ Williamson, and now he's one of the guys I'm most excited about.
Reuben Dunbar is a good get for anyone.

Who knows?, but they have offered James, Natter, and Obisah and the fact that their dline has been very pedestrian except for Watt 2 years ago. They had pluggers but no real pass rush. Kinda like MSU a couple years ago.

If I was a UW fan I would want all of them at the expense of other positions, if it came to that.

edit. it appears Watt is being brought in as a TE.

I got the impression that they wanted a big body simular to Worthy. They didn't find that in 2012. Then I thought 2013 they would pick up atleast one. I also forgot about the Vandy transfer, which will help. Where do you think Reynolds ends up? OG? DT?

Norman is likely a lean towards MSU. Fou is graduating and you move France inside that would open up one tackle spot next year. Would we have to play a true freshman there? We had so many injuries there I have no idea what kind of depth and experience we will have at OT next year.

After Fou graduates there will be 3 OT's with game experience returning in 2013. Skyler Burkland, Dan France and Hank Conway. No problem for 2013. It gets a little more dicey @ OT in 2014. Hank Conway may be granted a 6th year of eligibility on a medical appeal for 2014.
Note ; Not very likely that France will ever get moved inside.

I don't know if we tell you this enough, but the information is much appreciated.

I for one am pretty excited about the start of this class and I think all ten of those spots will be filled with quality players.

The recruiting landscape is just too fluid and still too early in the process to predict which DE's MSU will eventually sign for 2013. Here are the DE's that I like best in this order :
    IN, Elijah Daniel
    WI, A. J. Natter
    NJ, Tashawn Bauer
    WI, Alec James
    MD, Kevin Robbins, Jr.
    NJ, Dejuan Drennon
    OH, Tracy Sprinkle
    IL, Josh Augusta (DE/TE/OT)
OH, Matt Miller (May also project to OL at the next level)
    WI, Chikwe Obasih
WI, Owen Salzwedel (R. J. Shelton's HS teammate)
