Being reported Madaris' LOI fax arrived at MSU football offices 7:25-7:30 am Thursday 2 Feb 2012
Monty's new nickname Ground Hog?
Not hard to understand why some college coaches strive to coach on Sundays (and not just for the $$$). The new recruiting style in the B1G now that Urban is in the mix will make this experience with Monty pretty common, I suspect. This is my first year really following the recruiting action, and not sure its something I want to do again next year. Heart goes out to the coaches who work day and night, year round, and in many cases it ends up being the coach who makes the most false promises wins. Glad this is not MD's style; sad that the system rewards the dark arts.
So much hand wringing in this thread. Monty just needed a bit more time to make that final big decision of where he wanted to go to college. I'm sure a lot of us have had some hesitation with a big decision like that (especially at a moment like sending in the LOI, where you can't go back on that decision without a lot of consequences).
Welcome to MSU Monty!
I think people need to understand something as well. People wanted him to run it down to Kinko's yesterday and pay cash money to fax it in, but why do that when you can do it at your school for free. These kids don't have a lot of extra money hanging around but a few bucks is still a few bucks and it was clear from his tweets he had not changed his mind. He said he was sick yesterday and he would get it done, and he did.
Of course maybe he did put in the fax machine when he finally went to school and wanted time to think about something. But perhaps it wasn't MSU either, the coach was upset he didn't he didn't participate in the 3pm ceremony so he could get his glory or because he didn't go to school he was not allowed to participate in the signing ceremony but the coach seemed to be upset about something. So maybe Monty said, screw it, I'll do it tomorrow or maybe I can have my own ceremony tomorrow.
He was feeling some pressure as well, in the last two days he received over 100-messages and 200-FB friend requests and perhaps someone helped redirect his path so he didn't listen to the negativity.

CBD, now that this whole thing is over can we hear what was going on during the recruitment that made it so strange?
Seems like there's a pretty interesting story here that I'd like to hear.
THIS.....just curious: welcome to MSU MONTY!!!!!!!!!!
I was a little frustrated at his inability to get his letter in on time.
But, you know, some kids are different and the idea of leaving home and their friends can be overwhelming.
Seeing as he was seriously considering Cincinnati, I'm guessing that's the case.
Monty has always had MSU at the top of his list. There's no reason to believe he, at any time, didn't love the idea of being a Spartan.
Also, he decided to come to MSU despite the fact that we had already signed a number of great receivers.
It shows he loves MSU and has a lot of confidence in his ability.
Seems like a good kid and hard worker...I'm excited to see him wearing the Green and White.
He'll be a good one.
WIth the lost of the seniors and the uncertain Arnett situation, this is huge.
Here is some background on why Monty's recruitment lasted so long. Not necessarily in chronological order but I'll try not to be too random putting this together :
Monty is basically a quiet kid and kind of shy. He is a very private person. He never felt comfortable with all the recruiting hype around him being a highly sought after prospect. When he didn't respond to all the calls from the recruiting services, the media types began to describe him as being aloof, unresponsive and uncommunicative. He had a summer job so he didn't respond to calls he received while at work. He wasn't able to attend very many summer camps because of his job. He did attend MSU's summer camp and enjoyed his camp experience at MSU and he liked the MSU coaching staff.
He is fairly close with his cousin, Rodriguez Coleman. They had always talked about playing college ball together. Coleman was at UC last season but there was some ? whether Coleman would return to UC this season and Monty was waiting for that situation to play out. Coleman is returning to UC this season and that is what kept UC in the mix for Monty for so long.
Monty did like MSU and the MSU coaching staff. The problem was his uncle and his guardian and his HS HC are big O$U fans and he was getting some bad advice from them. He was being told that he was too good a player to go to MSU and MSU wasn't good enough for him. He grew up as a O$U fan and that's the environment he was in, pro-O$U. They were telling him to wait for an O$U offer that was sure to come and not to commit or in some cases, to not even visit any other schools. That's one reason why his recruitment dragged on for so long because people around him were telling him to wait for an O$U offer.
Monty is actually a high character kid. He pretty much put his recruitment on hold in the Fall and during his HS season to concentrate on helping his HS team (Cinci Moeller) to get to the state playoffs.
He was actually sick to his stomach on NSD and didn't attend the signing event at his HS. Trying to come to grips with making one of the biggest decisions in his life that may disappoint the people around him who were giving him advice right along. That's why he just couldn't push the "Send" button on the Fax machine with his LOI already in it late that afternoon.
The next morning he felt confident about his decision to come to MSU and Fax'd the LOI. That was a major step toward him becoming his own man.
He has never had any real supportive people in his life and he really felt kind of alone in making one of the most important decisions of his life.
Coming to MSU will be one of the most positive things that can happen in his life. He will become part of the Spartan Family. Being part of a family is a feeling he has seldom experienced. Coach D and the other coaches will be great mentors for him to learn from and he will know that he will always have family at MSU.
Welcome to MSU Monty.
Thanks CBD. I am ok with him waiting for an OSU offer, but it seems so wrong that his family wasn't supporting him when he wanted to go to MSU. I hope Monty has a great career here, and I expect he will.
Thank you VERY MUCH for taking your time to relay this. It really shows the stress these kids are under, and how some of them have no support to help deal with it. I was on Monty's side before, but now I will support and follow him closely regardless of anything that ever happens on the field. Congrats again Monty!

I like to play "bathroom detective". Corn?! I didn't eat any corn!
Fixed because after sending that LOI in, he's found his family.
Photo on strike.
Thank you. All the tools who were on this young man should be forced to memorize this. Sounds like we got an intelligent kid who is very emotionally stable. It takes lots of guts to tell people you love and/or respect, "no."
Welcome to MSU
I rarely include full quotes in a reply but this is so well thought out and expressed that it deserves "bumping". I truly believe Coach D encouraged the young man to carefully consider his decision and not make the choice before he was absolutely sure and comfortable in his decision.
Welcome to MSU, Monty! I value my time there as some of the best in my life and I was a long way from my N.J. home....and am still here many, many years later.
Thanks CBD. Thats a reality of the recruiting situation. There is a lot people i these kids ears telling them what to do instead of letting them decided for them selves. Glad Monty choose us and looking forward to having him.
what are you talking about? He got it in on time. The signing period is from February 1st to April 1st this year.
If he waited until April 2nd, then you could say he didn't get it in on time.
How do you know this? Are you close with him?
Pretty much spot on, a couple things i can add, it just wasn't OSU fans who contacted him but it was UM fans as well and he received well over 100+ FB messages and 200 FB friend requests in two days and it really confused him for a while with what they were saying. They were trying to redirect him away from MSU, but he was redirected back to the right path. He was being steered toward Cincy, OSU, Notre Dame (because they lost a receiver) and even UM in the last day or so. He also was very close to some friends down there and he was unsure of leaving them behind but realized he will still keep those friends and gather new ones on the way. However in the end, he never wavered on MSU, he just needed some time to be sure.
Alot of dumb parents out there. Let the kid pick and mind your business. It's not what you want.
Please keep your trolling off these boards.

How do you know this?
Does anyone know for sure what jersey number Monte will be wearing at MSU? I'd like to purchase his MSU jersey.
Actually, I talked to Taco about this and he said the exact same thing. Brilliant insight!!
