top five of Michigan State, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC and Notre Dame
Decision coming "soon".
"@ESPN_Lo: My top five are Michigan State, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC and Notre Dame in no particular order."
"In no particular order", but we're first!
USC and ND being there even without an offer is weird. I think we win between the offered schools.
It's nice that he's eliminated OSU. I saw them as being among the biggest competitors.
Better for Lawrence Marshall to take his time on this one. Would be nice to see a kid commit 100% and not have second thoughts if a U$C would offer down the line.
USC over signed for the most part the first two years of their probation and will be taking the scholly limitations over a two year span for the most part. Look for a very small class this year and next from what I've seen.
This to me is bigger than Lawrence taking his time. From everything out there, it seems like USC offering at ANY point could sway him, no matter where or when he committed somewhere else. If they don't have the ability to offer at all, I think we're in much better shape.
So with a small class they're only going to want to take 5's and the highest other rated recruits possible, USC ain't offering Marshall so he's gonna be all MSU sooner or later.
What's the deal with USC? Has LM stated some sort of fascination about them? (Besides the smog he'd be inhaling 24/7)
I wonder if Urban Meyer talked bad about the Michigan schools and Marshall got turned off by him, because for him to commit to OSU and decommit just like that makes we wonder, and now he don't even have them in his top 5.
dunno man....Mlive article from today makes it sound like scum is making headway:
"Coach Mattison, I was with him the whole time,'' Marshall told the Detroit News. "He said I'd be like Terrell Suggs as a rush guy coming off the edge."
Can we just hire a washed up ex-NFL coach already? Kids eat this shit up.
Uh...has he even BEEN to Michigan recently? I know he went once shortly after committing/decommitting from OSU, but I don't remember him visiting Michigan any times since then.
According to his profile his last visit to AA was Feb 13 and he has been to MSU 8 times since Feb. 12. We also know he skipped their Spring game.
He could have visited without anyone knowing I suppose, or those quotes in that story are a couple months old.
Curious, do recruits realize Mattison neither drafted nor developed Suggs? Its weird how often we hear him using that line. I guess some recruits just buy it. Very Urban Meyer-like.
That article is a hilarious read. The blue wall is strong in that one. Visited State 8 times since his last scUM visit and they throw in a 3 month old qoute. That article is an insult to the entire profession.
Yea, I thought that was a recent quote first time around; I didn't know he had visited UM recently. Turns out he hasn't, just poor journalism.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Detnews, ya say?
It's wild how many kids Mattison has told "hey you remind me of Terrell Suggs".
To be fair there's a difference between "you remind me of Terrell Suggs" and (we) will use you like Terrell Suggs as a rush guy.
Here's some info I bet Mattison did not share with Marshall:
- In 2009 when Mattison was hired by the Ravens, the Ravens were coming off a #2 NFL defense ranking in yards allowed, #1 in INTS and 33 sacks.
- In Mattison's first year with the Ravens, they dropped 1 spot to #3 in yards allowed, dropped 4 spots to #5 in INTs, and almost the same 32 sacks. Basically, he rode alongside what he had inherited.
- In 2010, his second year and maybe the first year where the D was "his", the Ravens dropped to #10 in yards allowed, #8 in INTS, and down to 27 sacks. Trending down.
He was then fired...I mean "he explored an opportunity elsewhere."
Not coincidentally, the very next year, the Ravens improved to #3 overall defense, dropped to #17 INTS, but turned around the sack total to a whopping 48.
That last point is something Marshall should pay attention to: Mattison was booted, and just like that total D and especially, SACKS shot way up.
And Suggs was in the League a full SEVEN YEARS before Mattison arrived. Its embarrassing he'd claim to have anything to do with that player's development.
The world is back to normal again. Spartans Bball preseason top 3, um....not, and Tupes is VIP once more. Great post.
I think "They said I'd be like" is closer to "You remind me of" than "We will use you like".
Am I the only one that didn't think there was anything terrible about that article? The writer is a UM writer, so a slant is inevitable, but I don't think he said anything Earth shattering, or anything that makes it sound like he is loving UM any more than MSU.

Since we've been on the subject of a USC offer I'll add this. 247 breaks down their offered prospects into 4 levels; A) Top Targets, B) High Choice, C) Offered, and finally D) Scout Look. Obviously scout look prospects haven't been offered yet and Top Targets are who they're recruiting the hardest. They've got one SDE commited and another 9 offered. They've only got a few WDE offered and Marshall isn't even on the Scout Look section yet.
They've got one guy offered on the WDE with a similar ranking profile of LM, but he's in Oregon on the West Coast. It appears to me they ideally want two SDE and one WDE this small class.
