Now that 2013 signing day has come and gone I have updated the scholarship chart. My way too early projection for number of 2014 signee's is 23. Emphasis will be placed on the Oline where we need to sign 5 and DE where I feel we need 3. We will also add at least 3 LB's but obviously already have 2 in the fold. I also see us taking QB, 1-2 RB's, 2 WR's, a TE, 1-2 DT's 1 S, 1 CB, and probably an additional athlete or two and maybe even a punter.
Edit 4/20: I want to back my prediction of 23 signee's down to 20 for 2014. Some of the senior class are forgoing there last year at MSU(Gainer, Hammock, Klatt) but we have not had the attrition I thought we would by now.
Edit 6/24: I spoke too soon back in April, we lost Dat Bull and Kerrick and possibly Burkland. I am going back to my original prediction of 23, where I should have stayed from the start.

Uhh, maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I count 93 guys on scholarship based on that chart, not including Mills or Freeman.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Should be 92 counting Mills because according to Sean he is still on the roster and was given a scholarship last fall. Sean was supposed to give us some type of update as to why he was not listed on the roster for the bowl game. Obviously the staff knows something we don't as far as attrition?
Yikes, they must . . .
Another source says Conway might not be back for his 5th year.
Any chance some RS-SR's could be coming back on their own dime? I'm particularly thinking of Hoover (could explain his debate over whether to come back) and Conway (based on rumor above).
I'm anticipating some turnover at the TE position, as we have several unproductive players on scholarship there. Hoebing is a RS-SR, correct?
laconophilia is everywhere...
Hoebing is a rising RS SR.
Conway . . . all I can say is that he wasn't in the 2-deeps even after the loss of Fonoti. I don't know about anything else.
There's a bit of a logjam in the back-7 too, so I could see a couple of guys transferring.
You're probably right about the back-7. So much talent.
I know Hoebing showed more improvement last season than any other, but as a RS-SR, the staff will have to evaluate if he's really better than potentially more talented younger players.
Gleichert and Elsworth are both former walk-on who played there way into the rotation at their respected positions and into a scholarship. Usually Dantonio keeps these types of players on scholarship but maybe there are returning to walk-on status?
Conway is at winter conditioning, he has a picture in Sean's photo gallery thread.
This is just for clarification purposes, but wouldn't some attrition naturally happen after the spring period as opposed to before?
yea; these kids are in the middle of semester that they're on scholarship for.
Yeah, I just find it strange that if they had told the coaches there were gone after this semester that they would still be doing team activities. I guess it happens fairly regularly though.
That's true. Yet at the same time, several players could be waiting to see where they fall on the depth chart after spring ball before they decide. Wasn't it last year that there were rumors Jairus Jones might transfer, but he became the starter after spring ball and decided to stay?
Mills will be an OT according to a buddy who saw him at Harper's...said he was huge and a bookend.
Mills is definitely considered more of a blocking TE....but this is the first time i've heard of him being an OT candidate.
Btw - loved how we used Michael Dennis as a blocking TE later in the year. Wish we would have done it earlier.
Michael Dennis (former HS TE) was a better option as a blocking TE than any of the regular TE's including Dion Sims. Will be interesting to see how the staff uses him in 2013.
There may be some consideration to move Jamare Mills to OT from TE. A lot depends on his overall progress this Spring. He was a HS TE whose forte was blocking and then he played FB and H-Back in JUCO. He arrived on campus late last summer after finishing the classes he neede to qualify at LCC. He was somewhat out of shape because he wasn't able to participate in summer conditioning or Fall practice. He played TE on the Scout Team but he struggled in the passing game. Another player that it will be interesting to see how the staff utiliizes him.
Who do you think is the best receiving TE on the roster next year? Heard good things about Price out of high school on that front, but with Gleichert returning he might be the #1 guy if he's healthy.
The broken wrist affected Andrew Gleichert last season but I'm not convinced he will be that much of a receiving threat @ TE even if he is healthy.
Paul Lang appears to be a better receiving threat than Gleichert.
Josiah Price is very athletic and could become a good receiving TE.
Will be very interesting to see how Juwan Caesar develops at TE. He is big and fast and could be a real receiving threat down the seam or on jump balls in the end zone.
True Fr. TE Dylan Chmura could surprise. He is up to 240 lbs. now @ about 6'-6" and is very well advanced technique-wise for a HS player coming in. He may be red-shirted but he has a lot of upside potential.
Is Caesar to TE a done deal?

OG Connor Kruse was awarded a scholarship last Fall.
As it stands now, MSU will have 20 scholarships available for 2014.
Nice; I thought he was working at C, or was that Lints? Those guys were walk-ons a year apart and I get them mixed up
Kyle Lints was @ OC for the Green team after Kodi Kieler left the game with an injury.
Connor Kruse was @ right OG for the White team.
