I generally agree with you and want 3 OL per year, but we did take 4 last year so that may help soften the blow a bit. Two OL this year seems to be reasonable, but it's just such a small class it's going to be very hard to squeeze in all the kids who want to be Spartans.
It will be interesting to see how MSU gets the numbers in line for 3-4 more guys in 2013. Right now, MSU is only losing 13 to graduation this year. It seems like WG is all but penciled to go to the league after this season, so that makes 14, so either there's another 2-3 early departures (not likely IMO), or some guys are going to transfer or hang up the cleats. Couple that with transfers/walk-ons/grayshirts that have been reported and I think the staff is going to have to get creative with scholarships.
Note: Not doubting the staff wants to add 3-4 more guys and/or will, just saying it may not be easy.
I believe the 3 or 4 number is now 2 or 3 after the Finley commit
Here are the positions MSU is looking to fill with the remaining 2013 scholarships :
QB - 0
RB - 0
WR - 0
TE - 0
OT - 0 or 1
OG - 0 or 1
DT - 1 (With Devyn Salmon's commit, the staff is still looking to sign another DT)
DE - 1 (With Demetrius Cooper's commit, the staff is still considering the possibility of taking another DE).
MLB - 0
OLB - 0
CB - 0
S - 1 (The staff wants a prototype SS in this class).
K - 0 (The staff is looking to sign a Preferred Walk-on K or possibly a Gray Shirt for 2013 since Dan Conroy will be a Sr. in 2012 and Kevin Muma will be a Sr. in 2013).
P - 0 (The staff would like to sign a Preferred Walk-On P for 2013).
MSU will eventually sign 2 or 3 more recruits in the 2013 class.
Would love to get another LT and DL in the 2013 class. We don't have the headline recruits or #'s vs prior years but I'm very pleased with the guys we've got so far.
Time to shift the focus to 2014 & the battle for Malik McDowell.
Why did State not offer that Gill kid from Moeller? Seems to be getting a lot of great comments on his play this weekend.
Gall? He camped at MSU, but the staff didn't extend an offer. He projects to an OG in college, and I'm not sure the staff will take a guard this year.
To be honest, MSU clearly missed out on some guys earlier in the year they would have liked, but got a guy in Finley they've been after ever since seeing him in camp. There weren't offers going out left and right for OL once Finley was offered, which I think is indicative the staff found (and got) their guy.
Man, I wish MSU had around 18-19 scholarships to give this year. Would like to see 1 more DE or DT, another OT and 1 OG.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Or just Norman at OT - Finley & Norman for 4 years would've been nice.
CBD, the new RCR makes it sound like we want 6 or 7 more commits for this class! Is that at all accurate??
I think it jives with what he said. CBD put a few 0 or 1s up there. RCR seems to indicate that the staff is interested but the depth has gotten so good that we no longer need to take guys just to fill spots or have bodies.
I agree Natron. Apparently the staff really would like a SS, OT, and DT. It has been reported that we could take perhaps up to 5 or six more. So that indicates to me that those last 2-3 spots would only be filled by a high quality kid # 1 on the recruiting board if they picked the Spartans.
Calero's leaving? Where did you hear that?
Συν ται η επι ται! Syn tai e epi tai! Ή ταν ή επί τας! E tan i epi tas!
Rexrode (among others) reported it yesterday.
Something tells me we end up taking four more in this class. It just seems like we're in on too many kids to only be taking two more or so.
If we could finish with Knevel, Peko, Augusta/Dunbar and Williams I would piss my pants with glee.
All five are quality, quality players, but don't be surprised if there's guys that pop up this fall/winter and end up Spartans. Happens every year.
Looks like it may have opened up a spot for Andrew Gleichart (spelling?).
Other possible prospects:
Sound about right? Hoping we have four scholarships left, but I'm guessing we have three. Would love for us somehow someway to get Knevel though too.
Adams is coming on a visit. Don't count us out...
I believe we are recruiting Augusta as a DT...could be wrong. I know we would find room for Adams somehow, someway but what if Augusta and Peko want to commit first? Do we tell the 2nd of the two that tries to commit to wait? Both of those two seem like too good of prospects to just wait for us...
Adams, Augusta, Bain, Peko.....wooooooo!
You know that our program is rising when we attract these kids....I love it!
I"ll take Adams and Augusta, or Bain and Augusta...
CBD what are we looking at here? Three left?
Other possibilities (obviously) DE/DT: Augusta, DE/DT: Dunbar
Happy with this class so far.
At this point in time, 2 or 3 more.
Peko and Williams for sure.
Then possibly one of Augusta, Dunbar or Bain.
Note : Don't think MSU has a realistic chance for Adams.
Yeah I don't really think Bain either.
I'd be thrilled with Peko, Augusta and Williams. It'd be fantastic if we could make room for Dunbar, but I gotta think we'd go OT if we had four scholarships to work with.
Solid class, but next year we do need to do better on the O-line

With that- I assume this means no more OL?
Does that mean MSU needs 4 OL in 2014?
