I guess what I find completely shocking (due to just being ignorant of what's happening on the inside) is that there is not a single OL recruit on that list. We have just one right now. I read today UCLA went from 8 to 7 commits; UM has about 10. OSU has around 5 I think. The list goes on. Are we that satisfied with what we have in the pipeline already, that we are just done at OL for this class? I'm not a chicken little... I think our recruiting at pretty much every other position - especially on defense, WR and QB, is fantastic. But this really puzzles me.
I completely agree w the last poster, it is quite puzzling how far from aggressive our staff seems to be when it comes to O line recruiting in this class. SCUM has like 7 linemen and got Dawson back today, and STILL offered Knevel today, a kid I truly think we missed the boat on. I don't care how well our young scout team linemen look, you need to load up at that position, and we simply haven't. Look at the amount of injuries our team has had recently, no one ever knows.
Looks like I was right. yet, I still got 2 downvotes.
Upvoted the Dawson and this post to even out the two downvotes.
MSU will sign 2-4 more prospects in the 2013 class.
Here are the prospects who MSU has a chance with currently :
FL, ATH Justin Williams - His top 3 are MSU, Purdue and Cinci. Planning an Official Visit to MSU on Jan. 18th. Had a good Sr. year and that renewed MSU's interest in him. MSU has a good chance with him.
WI, DE Alec James - WI verbal but he is looking around. Planning an Official Visit to MSU on Jan. 18th. I like MSU's chances with him.
PA, ATH Tyler Boyd - Pitt verbal. He is good friends with current Spartan Demetrious Cox. Still may be planning an Official Visit to MSU on Jan. 18th.
GA, DL Antonio Riles - FL verbal but he is looking around. Planning an Official Visit to MSU on Jan. 11th.
VA, DL Donta Wilkins - VA verbal but he is looking around. Pat Narduzzi convinced him to schedule an Official Visit to MSU on Jan. 18th.
IL, DL Josh Augusta - Had some academic issues, otherwise he would probably already be a verbal to his long time leader, Mizzou. Scheduled to visit MSU Jan. 25th.
MI, ATH Joshua Jones - ILL verbal. May receive an MSU offer if he visits Jan. 18th.
OH, ATH Marcus Ball - WI verbal but he is looking around. Planning an Official Visit to MSU on Jan. 18th but not confirmed yet.
OH, ATH Caleb Day - ILL verbal but he is looking around. Considering visiting MSU on Jan. 18th. Has an MSU offer waiting for him if he visits.
FL, DT Jaynard Bostwick - MSU is in his top 6.
NJ, DE Tashawn Bower - De-committed from Auburn. MSU is still trying to schedule him in for an OV.
FL, ATH Lamar Robbins - MSU is staying in contact with him but looks like a real long shot.
Recruits who could receive late offers :
MI, DT Kenton Gibbs
MI, ATH Desmond King

CBD, I think youve stated you coach HS ball, maybe OL if memory serves. No OL on this list of visitors, and none on the horizon as far as I can tell. What is your take on this class having one lone OL commit? Are we really that happy with the current roster situation?
Rest of our class looks really nice, despite low rankings because it's not a "big" class. Boyd would be the steal of the crop at this point in my opinion. Thanks
Just a thought about that- MSU has had two walk-on OL in the last two years who appear pretty good, to go with some schollie guys they are pretty happy with, like Clark. I don't think our OL is in the bad shape many do. And the ultimate question mark is our top OL recruit's future... will the big fella Riley stay on the MSU track team, or walk through the door that remains open to him to join the FB team.
The other consideration is that MSU is just losing McDonald (Fonoti has another year) and lost just Foreman and McGaha the year before. They brought in 4 OL in '12, so if they brought in no one in '13, they're still +1 over 2 years in total OL. With Finely they're +2.
They should bring in 3-4 in '14 and the classes should be fairly balanced.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
There goes Peko...
Yeah.... strange. Didn't even know they were a factor.
Dorsey has been saying for weeks that Peko may not be part of the MSU class because it turned out he was not going to be a mid-year enrollee as was once thought.
A lot of strikeouts on o and d line.
"What is green and white and red all over? The Spartans pounding their chests after this bloodbath" -Mitch Albom 11/2/13
The O-Line is a disaster. No way around it. It has performed mediocre at best during the past 5-6 years, and O-Line recruiting simply shit the bed this year.
We can all rationalize our strikeouts on O-linemen with depth, good prospects available in 2014, etc., but the fact is we got our asses handed to us on the recruiting trail this year.
Oh, and save the stars don't matter talk. This isn't an issue of stars- this is an issue of not landing kids that we wanted. Will this equate to an inferior product in the field? Not sure, but there is no spinning the recruiting woes.

So it looks like Jan 18th is a big day for MSU. Close it out.
CBD - What's your take on the Peko commit to OSU ? Obviously, as of 12/15, you were pretty confident about getting him. Were you aware of what Dorsey was saying ?
Lew is right...our O-line recruiting for '13 was pathetic. Our O-line play this year was poor, & for sheer lack of numbers of kids coming in at this point,,,what's it going to look like 3-4 years down the road.....yikes !!
Other than missing out on a few guys early in the process, how is it pathetic? MSU identified and went after Dennis Finley and got him. After that, who did they make a huge push for? Dawson? Sort of, but I think it was pretty apparent he was heading back to UM once his offer was back.
People freak out MSU is 'missing' on recruits but seem to forget Hoover and Fonoti are back next year. If they weren't returning, I would expect MSU would use their scholarships on another DT and OT.
The fact is,,,,,,MSU also identified these '13 highly regarded linemen, in the Midwest, went after them, & got zero commits....
Lisle, Bosch, Pocic, Kugler, Norman, Elmer,,,add Dawson to the list.......someone else may be able to add to those names.
We're all happy to get Finley,,,,but come one,,,ONE kid, with the number of kids that were available & that we recruited. We did not do a good job of recruiting there,,,,,,maybe for '14 we will,,,,we'll have to.

Your view is too narrow. We offer well over a hundred kids at all positions. We can take less than 20 total this year. So we "miss" on most. Bama makes about a 150 offers too; they "miss" on most. Also, we offer guys like Elmer or Dawson, but they were strong leans for other teams from the start....not really a "miss" when Elmer wanted to play for ND his whole life. Not really a "miss" when Norman doesn't want to play football for anyone. UM also offers people like Harris, Bullough, Finley, Reschke, etc....with no chance of landing them. I wouldn't call those "misses" for UM either.
Its accurate to say we were disappointed in a couple kids who said they'd visit, but never did (Kugler). Its also a little puzzling why we're not going harder after other OL recruits -- but maybe we're just not in dire need of OL. Maybe all the injuries in the last 2 years gives us the impression we have a dire need, but maybe we dont. In any even, you're being much too dramatic saying its pathetic or a disaster.
I get that people are frustrated that MSU missed out on numerous prospects but at the same time you don't take a recruit you were originally iffy on just to fill your class I'd rather we wait until the '14 class instead of reaching for prospects. It is imparative that we load up on '14 prospects however.
Kenton Gibbs had a better offer list than I remembered. Would be good to keep our foot in the Cass Tech door, too.
Spot on, great post. +1
