MSU has only one California native (juco transfer Fou Fonoti) on roster. RT @CoachDuzzMSU: Headed to LA today for a little recruiting trip.

I was about to post this... Wonder who he's visiting down there...
Not sure. There's a lot of JUCOs in the area or maybe he's starting to focus on 2014.
Nearby is San Diego....Chargers looking for a DC?
Maybe a JUCO RB?
If MSU could find a talented, big back to sign, I think it would be great considering Hill, Thompkins and Shelton are smaller guys and Holmes will be a true FR. That said - it has to be a guy that will definitely play next fall and I don't know how many of those guys are left at this point.

Another site has rumblings that Darrien Harris is going to get a look at RB this spring. Let's not forget that that was his position in High School (due to some injuries, however).
Yea, and he looks like the odd man out at OLB; Tai Jones has the Star spot locked up and Ed Davis is going to take over for Denicos in '14.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.
Also Lyles and Riley Bullough waiting in the wings. We're stacked at LB for many years.
Strange though, this whole spring we heard rave reviews of Harris and not much about T. Jones, yet it was Jones who basically displaced a senior starter.
True but hes a year behind Jones, so he could get the kind of PT Elsworth gets for a couple years then start as a senior.
I would support giving Harris a look at RB. I know he filled in on the scout team a bit as a true freshman. Additionally, Cox and Delton Williams have the athletic ability and some size to play RB. Will they get a shot? Who knows, but I wouldn't mind seeing Cox doing what LT essentially did this year and moonlight on O for a season and move back to D.
This all presupposes the current RBs aren't up to snuff, and to be fair to them, they haven't had much of an opportunity to produce and showcase their stuff.
If Ty Issac actually decommits, and bell goes pro, just use the pitch that he could sart right away.
Speaking of this, I know Skip posted earlier in the thread that there was some smoke about Issac being interested in MSU or vice versa or both? Anyone have anymore details?
There is no smoke there. Are you kidding?
There was smoke that he was wavering on his commitment to USC, though he denied it (for whatever that's worth). I was more so asking if there was anything substantive about an MSU connection because I haven't seen anything. If it's not substantiated, then just say so.
There's not any smoke regarding MSU. None.
Bill Greene interviewed other recruits in the USC class and they told him they thought Isaac was gone. They then went on to tell him the schools he'd been talking about we're MSU, um and nd. I'm not suggesting he's correct, but Bill Greene is considered a good journalist.
so what does the 3 nfl departures do to scholarship numbers? any more open up for this year or were we already projected to be over a bit?
Should open it up to 18-20 total spots or so given the natural attrition of career injuries, transfers, etc.
Shouldn't open up any. MSU already had more commits than graduating seniors by five or so (I believe).
I think MSU has 10 departing scholarship seniors (could be wrong) plus these 3 guys departing.
So were looking at 3-5 over the next month and 2 days, should be fun after a relatively boring couple months on the recruiting front.
Where are you getting 3-5 more?
Martin Spartan's scholarship chart shows 93 players on 'ship for 2013, including all the 2013 verbals. That list includes Horne, Bell, Sims and Gholston, so if you subtract those four, the total is now 89. I'm not sure where guys like Corey Freeman stand, but regardless, MSU is over the 85 man limit even with these NFL departures.
Unless there's a mass exodus of career ending injuries or transfers, I don't see how MSU is adding that many more guys.
There have been rumors that MSU's class could approach 18 kids, maybe even 19 or 20. With 15 current commits, that's 3-5 additional kids. Personally, I'm excited about it, b/c it is evidence that the coaching staff is willing to reevaluate themselves and their past decisions a bit. I have no doubt that there is stale blood in the program, b/c there is in every program. As long as we aren't losing contributors and aren't unethically running kids off, I welcome attrition. I mean, at some point we have to just accept that a junior/senior backup just isn't going to achieve their potential.
laconophilia is everywhere...
MSU will sign 17-18 players for 2013.
Do you think it's fair to say that the staff is anticipating 17-18, and that any unexpected attrition is what could potentially bump it to 19-20? Or does the 17-18 include a couple anticipated unknown defections?
It seems to me similar things are being said, just some statements/predictions include the unexpected while some leave the unexpected as just that.
