The 2013 Realistic Wish List

  • This is the earliest in the recruiting process that I've ever put together a wish list. With MSU's 2013 class about 50% complete, it's time to take a look at a realistic list.
MSU has 61 offers out to prospects who are still uncommitted. Here goes :

MI, OT Riley Norman - If he decides to play college football, it will be for MSU. May announce a decision before his HS Sr. year begins.
OH, WR Trey Kilgore - Will announce his decision on Mon., June 25th. He will commit to MSU.
FL, ATH Lamar Robbins - His top 2 are MSU and WVU but about 15 other schools are still pushing hard for him.
MI, OT Dennis Finley - He is starting to blow up. MSU and ILL currently lead with o$u right behind.
FL, DT Devyn Salmon - MSU leads over WVU, Cinci and Mizzou. He has already scheduled an Official Visit to MSU on Sept. 22nd (EMU game).
WI, DE Alec James - It's between MSU and Wisc. with the Badgers holding a slight home state school lead.
CA, S Brandon Arnold - MSU and Cal are his current Top 2.
IL, DE Demetrious Cooper - As expected, he has started to blow up after Coach D offered him. MSU and ND are his top 2. MSU offered him as a DE while ND offered him as a OLB.
OH, OL Matt Miller - MSU is in his Top 8.
IL, DL Josh Augusta - Top 4 of MSU, ILL, ND and um. MSU may have a slight lead.
IL, DE Ruben Dunbar - MSU is in his Top 6 and may have a slight lead.
OH, S Solomon Warfield - MSU is in his Top 5. MSU initially offered him as a CB but may continue to recruit him as a S.
JUCO, DT Kyle Peko - MSU is in his Top 6. MSU legacy. If USC were to offer him, that's where he would go.
FL, DT Monty Nelson - MSU is in his Top 6.
WI, TE Dylan Chmura - Top 2 of MSU and Wisc. Attended Wisc's camp but no confirmation yet that they offered him.
FL, TE/WR Travis Johnson - MSU just made the cut to his Top 8.
NJ, S Reginald Green - MSU is in his Top 8.
FL, OT Richy Klepal - MSU is in his Top 8.
TX, WR/TE Ellis Jefferson - MSU is in his Top 6.
FL, S Justin Williams - Top 3 of MSU, S. Car. and FIU.
PA, ATH Tyler Boyd - Versatile player who can play RB, WR, CB and S. Hasn't named any leaders but PSU would probably be right up there.
PA, WR Jay Harris - MSU leads. If PSU offers, that's where he would go. With a Kilgore commit, MSU may stop recruiting him.
FL, DT Kyle Shortridge - MSU is in his Top 10.
OH, S Marcus Ball - MSU is in his Top 6 but Wisc. and ND lead.
GA, DE Antonio Riles - MSU is in his Top 7 but GA and FL lead.
TX, OL Caleb Benenoch - MSU is still recruiting him.
PA, ATH Delton Williams - Wait and see.
IL, WR Laquon Treadwell - MSU is in his Top 5.
PA, WR Robert Foster - MSU is in his Top 7. He's Bama bound.
MD, CB Taivon Jacobs - MSU made his Top 8. With Darian Hicks' commit, MSU will probably stop recruiting him.

Well, that's now 29 names for 7 or 8 spots.
Note : Dylan Chmura is now officially off the Wish List.

  • We are money on the skill positions but I really wish we'd be able to get some high level trench guys. I was hoping Worthy going to the NFL would draw some DT's attention.

  • Thanks CBD. Norman seems like such a key prospect given the Benenoch decommit. Can you react to the following:

    - Cooper and Augusta seem like they will take all officials and perhaps wait until Feb 1. Surprised to hear we might lead for Augusta. What is your feeling on Cooper....and your take on ND's vision of him as OLB? My ignorant take: he looked like pure DE edge rusher to me.

    - Is Khairy Bailey a possibility?

4-3 DEs can often be standup edge rushers at the 3-4 OLB spot.

If ND is telling Augusta that he will be a NT in their 3-4, then he may not be so interested. If they tell him he can be a 3-4 DE, that will be different.
UM may have cooled on Augusta.
Long way to go in his recruitment.
Cooper has more upside as a 4-3 DE than as a 3-4 OLB. He's never played LB and would be a real project to teach him pass coverage skills and find out if he has LB instincts. He could grow into a 3-4 DE but I think that would be a waste of his talents.
Bailey is a possibility but MSU sees him as more of a DT prospect.

  • Thats a bunch of players with MSU holding slight leads for. The D-line wishlist is looking good, but only 1 on the O-line that has us at a lead.

  • CBD......is MSU still recruiting FL DB/LB Matt Milano and Brookwood, Georgia DE Shaun McGee?

Why didn't the MSU staff offer Ohio OL Sean Welsh? He looks like a solid prospect. Thanks!!!

  • Did not see an Iowa commit coming this soon from Warfield

I'm sure the Hicks commitment helped move that process along.

  • I am also wondering about DE Shaun McGee. He looks really good and he comes from the same town (Snellville, GA) as Nick.Tompkins and Andre Sims (I believe). He has impressive offers That is for sure and I am assuming because Alabama offered he would be Bama bound but they offered a while a go and he has not committed yet. are we still pursuing him or is he out of the picture? Thanks in advance!!

MSU may be in contact with Milano but I don't think an offer is imminent.
MSU is recruiting McGee but they have some ground to make up.
Remember, this is a "Realistic" Wish List.
Don't know why MSU hasn't offered Sean Welsh. He may not have shown any interest when they contacted him. Also, the staff may feel they have a better chance with Matt Miller.

  • I haven't been paying super close attention, but 'if he decides to play college football' re: Riley.....I haven't heard that before. Is this old news?

EDIT: Got caught up in his individual thread. Thanks for the info as always, CBD.

Thanks CBD, this is great stuff.

So if we were to take it a step further, we can probably put together a most-likely class with the unlikely assumption that no other recruits will pop up along the way.

    OFFENSE
    - QB: Damion Terry (verbal)
    - RB: RJ Shelton (verbal)
    - RB: Gerald Holmes (verbal)
    - WR: Trey Kilgore (likely to commit today)
    - TE: Dylan Chmura (verbal)
    - OT: Riley Norman (hopeful)
    - OT: Dennis Finley
    - OG: Matt Miller (though he was being recruited as OT, but referencing an earlier article that states OG)

    DEFENSE
    - LB: Jon Reschke (verbal)
    - LB: Shane Jones (verbal)
    - CB: Darian Hicks (verbal)
    - FS: Jalyn Powell (verbal)
    - SS: Lamar Robbins, Delton Williams, or Brandon Arnold (this one seems to be toughest to call)
    - DE: Ruben Dunbar
    - DE: Demetrious Cooper
    - DT: Devyn Salmon or Josh Augusta

This puts us at 16. Coach D has stated publicly he thinks it will be 15 or 16. Some would probably call this a best-case scenario, but based on CBD's list, it is not far-fetched.

This would be a class loaded with talent. In my eyes, the only question mark in terms of talent would be Devyn Salmon, only because I haven't seen his film and his underwhelming offer list up to this point.

CBD, and everyone else: Aside from Alec James at DE and Peko at DT, do you see a more likely scenario based on the names in the "realistic wish list"?

  • I think MSU is sitting very well with some talented DEs and S. That said, I think there some work to be done at the OT and DT positions. Not saying MSU isn't going to get talented guys, but I think they're going to have some tougher battles at those two positions.

    GMSparty12

  • Thanks for the info, CBD.

Makes me slightly worried about the OL. Looks like we've got some good chances on some DEs at least.

Good points on DE and S. I would have loved Kevin Robbins but the guys we are still in on are good enough where we're certainly not in panic mode yet. As for S, not only are we in on some very good players, we've got a TON of talent as underclassmen.

The staff's hesitancy with throwing out tons of offers at DT leads me to believe that they like the guys they have, I think we should take note of that. Getting one solid DT to continue to add depth is important though.

As for OT, we continue to struggle there but there's tons of time.

  • My next favorite guy that I would like to see a commit from would be the defensive end Cooper. Just loved the fact that he slapped the crap out of scuM's OL recruits at SMSB.

With the further tutelage of Coach Gill and Narduzzi and the physical training of coach Mannie, he would elevate his skills and just be able to line up across from them on game day and just say "I owned you then and I own you now".

  • Any reason why Riley Norman wouldn't want to play college football?

Seems like he could potentially be a big time NFL prospect if he stays healthy.

Definitely #1 player I'd like to see become a Spartan.

I'd guess if he goes shot/discuss vs football it's for love of sport vs. financial factors, or possibly health concerns. It will be interesting to see what he chooses, and how the staff adapts if he goes for the gold.
