The 2013 Realistic Wish List

  • Up-Dated 6/26/12
This is the earliest in the recruiting process that I've ever put together a wish list. With MSU's 2013 class about 65% complete, it's time to take a look at a realistic list.
MSU currently has 58 offers out to prospects who are still uncommitted. Here goes :

MI, OT Riley Norman - If he decides to play college football, it will be for MSU. May announce a decision before his HS Sr. year begins.
FL, ATH Lamar Robbins - His top 2 are MSU and WVU but about 15 other schools are still pushing hard for him.
MI, OT Dennis Finley - He is starting to blow up. MSU and ILL currently lead with o$u right behind. This is eventually going to come down to MSU and o$u.
FL, DT Devyn Salmon - MSU leads over WVU, Cinci and Mizzou. He has already scheduled an Official Visit to MSU on Sept. 22nd (EMU game).
WI, DE Alec James - It's between MSU and Wisc. with the Badgers holding a slight home state school lead.
CA, S Brandon Arnold - MSU and Cal are his current Top 2. Ore. lurks.
IL, DE Demetrious Cooper - As expected, he has started to blow up after Coach D offered him. MSU and ND are his top 2. MSU offered him as a DE while ND offered him as a OLB.
OH, OL Matt Miller - MSU is in his Top 8. If o$u doesn't offer him, then MSU has a good chance with him.
IL, DL Josh Augusta - Top 4 of MSU, ILL, ND and um. MSU may have a slight lead.
IL, DE Ruben Dunbar - MSU is in his Top 6 and may have a slight lead.
JUCO, DT Kyle Peko - MSU is in his Top 6. MSU legacy. If USC were to offer him, that's where he would go.
FL, DT Monty Nelson - MSU is in his Top 6.
NJ, S Reginald Green - MSU is in his Top 8.
FL, OT Richy Klepal - MSU is in his Top 8.
TX, WR/TE Ellis Jefferson - MSU is in his Top 6.
FL, S Justin Williams - Top 3 of MSU, S. Car. and FIU.
PA, ATH Tyler Boyd - Versatile player who can play RB, WR, CB and S. Hasn't named any leaders but PSU would probably be right up there.
FL, DT Kyle Shortridge - MSU is in his Top 10.
OH, S Marcus Ball - MSU is in his Top 6 but Wisc. and ND lead.
GA, DE Antonio Riles - MSU is in his Top 7 but GA and FL lead.
TX, OL Caleb Benenoch - MSU is still recruiting him.
PA, ATH Delton Williams - Wait and see.
IL, WR Laquon Treadwell - MSU is in his Top 5.
PA, WR Robert Foster - MSU is in his Top 7. He's Bama bound.
MD, CB Taivon Jacobs - MSU made his Top 8. With Darian Hicks' commit, MSU will stop recruiting him.

Well, that's now 25 names for 5 or 6 spots. Realistically, the staff will continue recruiting about 20 of these players.

Note : The staff will now back off recruiting WR's and TE's. The staff will begin to concentate on OL, DL and a SS to finish out the 2013 class.

  • I'm hoping for:

    ATH: Lamar Robbins
    OT: Dennis Finley
    OL: Matt Miller
    OT: Riley Norman
    DE/DT: Josh Augusta
    DE: Alec James

Sounds like Norman is a no go, though. So I would gladly take someone like Klepal or Benenoch, but both seem a bit unlikely at this point.

    TerryLove

  • SS - Robbins
    OT - Finley
    OG - Miller
    OG - Benenoch
    DE - Cooper
    DT - Bailey

That would be a great end to this clss.

    Macks

  • Norman and Benenoch are gone. Time to move on.

We need two OL in this class really, really bad. It's pretty amazing that we're now hoping a Cass Tech OL commits so that this staff doesn't strike out completely with OL in 2013. Thinking they will be tapping into the JUCO ranks for OL if they miss on Klepal or Finley. Rather would go that route than take a flyer on an in-state kid. No offense to guys like Kieler, but you can't keep taking players like that year after year after you've missed on priority linemen. It will catch up to us and we'll be trotting out an O-line featuring the likes of Kamm, Deyo and Kieler.

  • I just don't understand why the staff has never gone hard after Ohio tackle Kyle Meadows. Kid is real good. Also any updates on Lovell Peterson recently? I am guessing he never got that ride up to camp last week, he would be a great player to grab considering his potential to excel on both lines at the next level.

    Jizzy2323

  • So, who is left at OT/OG?

Kleple seems to have a top five that does not include us. What about Darius Latham? Shows Tenn and Wisc - maybe the good guys can sneak back in?

Everyone keeps including klepal on a wish list but we missed his top 5. Latham has never been an option.

  • Based on the idea that we're focusing on OL, DL, and SS from here on out, I thought I'd extract the remaining guys we're still in the running for. This is based on CBD's list along with this week's news:

    Offensive Line:
    MI, OT Dennis Finley
    FL, OT Richy Klepal
    TX, OL Caleb Benenoch

    Defensive Line:
    FL, DT Devyn Salmon
    IL, DL Josh Augusta
    JUCO, DT Kyle Peko
    FL, DT Monty Nelson
    FL, DT Kyle Shortridge
    WI, DE Alec James
    IL, DE Demetrious Cooper
    IL, DE Ruben Dunbar
    GA, DE Antonio Riles

    SS/ATH:
    CA, S Brandon Arnold
    NJ, S Reginald Green
    FL, S Justin Williams
    OH, S Marcus Ball
    FL, ATH Lamar Robbins
    PA, ATH Tyler Boyd
    PA, ATH Delton Williams

I've been trying to keep a level head about the disappointing OL-recruiting news from this week, but it certainly is frustrating to see our prospect list dwindling. I'm sure our staff will find some guys, but it'd be nice to not have to think about it so much.

My confidence in the end result of DL class is certainly much higher. Getting any one of those DEs would be great. All studs.

  • Any currently committed players to keep an eye on? Specifically I'm wondering about Dillard and the two Cass Tech kids, but if there are others and especially more likely let me know. Nothing I've heard about those three makes me think they will, just guys I thought we had a chance at before.

I wonder if ND has a rough year and Kelly is booted whether or not MSU can flip Elmer.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I don't think he's going there for Kelly. I heard somewhere that he's Catholic and his religion is important to him. I think he's going for the institution, not the regime

I think his father said it would take a Sandusky for that to happen. I would like to think ND recruiting a bunch of other highly regarded OL would do it, but I just dont see it.

Helps that Michigan has filled up with OL already as well.

Kelly would need to lose every game. He's not going anywhere.

At best he's going to be on the hot seat if he doesn't go at least 8-4. At worst he'll be fired. Look at their schedule. I don't see nine wins on that schedule. I barely see seven.

This is the earliest in the recruiting process that I've ever put together a wish list. With MSU's 2013 class about 65% complete, it's time to take a look at a realistic wish list.
MSU currently has 51 offers out to 2013 prospects who are still uncommitted. Here goes :

PA, ATH Delton Williams - Drug charges against him were dismissed. Now planning to take Official Visits to MSU and Neb. MSU leads for him.
FL, ATH Lamar Robbins - His top 2 were MSU and WVU but about 15 other schools are still pushing hard for him. If the U were to offer him, that's where he would go.

FL, DT Devyn Salmon - MSU leads over WVU, Cinci and Mizzou. He has already scheduled an Official Visit to MSU on Sept. 15th (ND game). Now planning to announce his college decision before the end of July. He will commit to MSU. The ? is; Will Coach D accept his committment before he visits MSU ? We'll know on Mon. when Coach D returns from vacation.
WI, DE Alec James - It's between MSU and Wisc. with the Badgers holding a slight home state school lead.
CA, S Brandon Arnold - MSU and Cal are his current Top 2. If Ore. offers him, then that's where he would go.
IL, DE Demetrious Cooper - As expected, he has started to blow up after Coach D offered him. MSU may have a slight lead now over ND. MSU offered him as a DE while ND offered him as a OLB. May visit MSU again this summer. If not, he will take an Official Visit to MSU. If MSU would ever offer his HS teammate Khari Bailey, then they would be a package deal.
IL, DL Josh Augusta - Top 7 of MSU, ILL, ND, Mizzou, Neb., Iowa and Ind. MSU may have a slight lead. He has some grade issues which it appears he is getting resolved. Planning to take an Official Visit to MSU.
IL, DE Ruben Dunbar - MSU is in his Top 6 and may have a slight lead.
JUCO, DT Kyle Peko - MSU is in his Top 6. MSU legacy. If USC were to offer him, that's where he would go. Planning to take an Official Visit to MSU. His friend, Fou Fonoti will be his Spartan host when he visits.
OH, OL Kyle Meadows - MSU is in his Top 5. He attended o$u's summer camp but they didn't extend him an offer. If o$u ever offers him, then that's where he would go. If not, MSU has a good chance with him. He wants to take an Official Visit to MSU.
FL, DT Monty Nelson - MSU is in his Top 6. Planning to take an Official Visit to MSU.
NJ, S Reginald Green - MSU is in his Top 8.
FL, S Justin Williams - Top 3 of MSU, S. Car. and FIU.
PA, ATH Tyler Boyd - Versatile player who can play RB, WR, CB and S. Hasn't named any leaders but PSU would probably be right up there.
OH, S Marcus Ball - MSU is in his Top 5 along with Wisc., ND, ASU and PSU. MSU will receive one of his 5 Official Visits.
GA, DE Antonio Riles - MSU is in his Top 7 but GA and FL lead.
TX, OL Caleb Benenoch - MSU is still recruiting him. He may take an Official Visit to MSU.
OH, DT Donovan Munger - May be an o$u lean but he is planning to take all 5 of his official visits and MSU could get one.
FL, DT Maquedius Bain - De-committed from FSU. Recently stated that his top 5 are now MSU, Miami, Bama, LSU and USC.
NY, WR Malique Belfort - Recently offered by MSU. The staff is still considering taking a big WR in 2013 but it's not necessarily a priority and Belfort fits the mold (6'-4", 200 lbs.). He is planning to take an unofficial visit to MSU yet this summer.
MI, OT Riley Norman - Word at this time is that he will not play college football.
IL, WR Laquon Treadwell - MSU is in his Top 5 but he will eventually choose UM.
PA, WR Robert Foster - MSU is in his Top 5. Pitt may lead now due to family issues. Also some grade concerns.

Well, that's now 24 names for 5 or 6 spots. Realistically, the staff will continue recruiting about 20 of these players hard.

Note : The staff may now back off some in recruiting WR's and no more TE's. The staff will begin to concentate on OL, DL and a SS to finish out the 2013 class.

What are the chances with Boyd if PSU gets hit hard by the NCAA? I know they likely wont want another WR, but he is to good to pass on.

MSU has pretty well filled all the positions that Boyd can play; WR, RB, S, CB.
Having said that, He is too good a ATH to pass on if he wanted to commit to MSU.

  • CBD, thanks for updating this list. Really makes me wish we had 8 or 9 more spots open instead of 5 or 6. There's a lot of guys on this list that would be very tough to turn away, looking specifically at the DT and DE spots. It's tough to see us taking more than one DE at this point, yet we're in strong contention for two. If it turns out we have to turn down Cooper or Dunbar, that would be very unfortunate. But I guess it'd be a good problem to have.
