The Official 2014 Recruiting Thread

I'm not worried about them driving the fans crazy. I'm talking about a kid being allowed to make his decision and be left alone. Currently, that isn't the case. A recruit cannot elect to no longer be contacted by recruiters. He has to fend off each recruiter as he comes.

If an early signing period was put in place, no kids would be forced to signed. They still would have the choice to wait it out. But it would remove some of the 'verbal commitment to save a spot' and 'I'm a verbal but haven't decided yet' issues. With an early signing period, either the kid signs or he isn't a commitment. Simple.

This does seem like a good idea for the reasons you mention and it seems good for the coaches and good for the kids. Seems like coaching changes would be best handled by the NCAA granting waivers, not a blanket rule, because that leaves the initiative in the hands of the kid and their family. The only downside I can see is it might push the recruiting process even earlier.

When do you think it should be?

June/July before senior football season. It might push it up a bit, but it's already getting pushed up a ton naturally.

As for coaches leaving, basketball has to deal with the same issue, so I don't see it as a show stopper.

"Naturally" seems like a slightly ironic way to describe Les Miles stalking 8th graders, but you're right, that's all happening already and the incentives will tend to push coaches to get worse and worse with it. No reason to let that stop an early signing period.

New offer spreadsheet link, added updated Scout rankings. Durkin moved up quite a bit, not sure what Byron Bullough did to drop 40 positional spots...

  • OP edited. 247 sucks and always adds in the old links even when i remove them, so the link actually in the op (not the ones attached) is the most updated one.

Thanks XD....looks like a fine, strapping Greek lad. Can't quite see but is that a Northwestern tee shirt he's wearing?

    SPARTICUSS

  • Looking close, I think it says North St. Charles, which is his high school's name. Pretty sure there's a space after "North" at least.

    Now that we've solved this...

  • Seems like a lot of offers to IL kids recently, or am I mistaken? Who's got ChiTown/IL now that DR is gone?

Roushar was timid and not aggressive in pushing for offers for IL recruits.
Burton and Samuel will be much more aggressive in getting offers extended to recruits in Chicagoland and IL.

  • IL always seems to be loaded with linemen. We have not lost out on many of our big-time, super-early-offer linemen yet so the staff has to really like all these recently-offered players.

Speaking of Illinois: where are we at with Brian Allen CBD? Is Bollman going to try and close the deal with this kid or what? Now he's taking more visits elsewhere...not good

Bosch, visited 7 times and no one closed the kid. Visits scUM once and they ask him to pull the trigger.

What does a 2013 recruit have to do with my post? I meant 2014 offers.

Skip will never forgive the MSU staff for each missed recruit. He takes it personally.

It was related to an IL OL who was a plan A target we let slip away. We seem to have a bunch of plan A guys still out there for this cycle. Here's to hoping we land more than a few of them.

Not true in the least bit. While missed opportunities bother me, that one especially did because I think the prospect did everything but beg the staff to close him. 7 visits, come on man?
    Moving on.

Still not really relevant. My point is that we haven't had many (any?) of our high-target linemen slip off the board yet for 2014, so this recent round of offers to lineman has to be guys the staff really wants. There's no reason to move on to plan B yet.
