    Harris Sets Kentucky Visit

By Adam Zagoria on October 04, 2011, 11:11AM

Kentucky is in the mix for Gary Harris.

“Yes, we have an official set up for Oct. 22,” Harris, the No. 3 shooting guard in the Class of 2012, said by text.

Harris recently had a home visit with Cats coach John Calipari that went well.

“He talked about how he wants me to be a part of the program and what they had to offer and discussed when they could get me on campus,” Harris said.

Harris, out of Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern, visited Purdue last weekend and still has visits set for Indiana Oct. 15 for Hoosier Hysteria and Michigan State Nov. 5 for the Minnesota football game.

Kentucky landed a commitment from 6-5 shooting guard Archie Goodwin, but that apparently won’t deter Harris from considering the Wildcats.

“Cal has proven he can play same-position players at the same time successfully,” Harris said by text.

If Calipari swoops in at the last minute and gets Harris to commit to Kentucky I'm afraid Izzo's head might explode

It was expected that Kentucky would get an OV scheduled (at least in my opinion). The fact that MSU still gets the last OV is encouraging, and there's no reason to believe that Izzo can't bring this one home. I doubt anyone who felt disappointed not getting Harris here for MM still feels that way today.

  • I'm afraid that if the 1 and done rule does not get changed one way or the other, Cal will be able to sell the NBA pitch to every recruit for the rest of his coaching career. I hate everything he stands for and there is no doubt in my mind that MSU is the greatest school in the world but what high school star doesn't dream of playing in the league? Not that he'll beat out Izzo for Harris...but he'll be in the background lurking for almost every 5* that we recruit.

What does Cal do that makes everyone automatically get into the NBA? Nothing. He just gets good players, and then leverages that against recruits. If Izzo had the type of caliber players Cal brings in every year, he would be sending them to the NBA also

Harris will play in the NBA (barring injury) regardless of where he decides to play college ball at.

And what is the top NBA "farm club?" I think coaches whose main selling point is that their programs' main focus is getting players ready for the NBA as fast as possible instead of the traditional goals like winning championships have a distinct advantage with most top prospects. Rick Barnes has openly stated such about his own program and look how well he has done attracting top recruits to a program that does not have a championship tradtion and plays a distant second fiddle to the football program.

I think part of the allure is instant playing time as well. They see a guy like John Wall being replaced by Brandon Knight and Brandon Knight being replaced by Marquis Teauge. Then you have Doron Lamb who if he leaves is going to be replaced by Archie Goodwin. If someone like Brandon Knight would of came of MSU, he would of been playing off of the ball. They also play in the Dribble Drive motion offense. You put that together with $$$, most of the top kids are going to want to go their.

  • The goal at UK is no longer to win championships, but to assemble the best recruiting class and to place the most guys in the first round of the draft. That's why the 2010 draft was "the biggest day in the history of Kentucky basketball" and why folks on their message boards seem more interested in prep class rankings and the NBA than the team they put on the court.

Kentucky stables thoroughbreds. They are not interested in college basketball.

Oh come on, that's baloney. They certainly are still interested in the former, and the latter is a means to an end. If they are getting 4-5 of the top 10 players on a yearly basis, it's only a matter of time before they win it all. I don't like the way they're doing it, but don't say they aren't trying to win championships.

Cal has been at UK for two years. He's gone to an EE and a FF. Sounds to me like they're competing for titles.

I don't think we're going to hear much except the generic recruit-speak. If there was any serious tells or leaks, they're not public yet or widespread. The Harris camp has been pretty tight on that. Sure, you can go over to Indiana boards and read threads about when Harris was or was not smiling but I don't think that tells you much.

I've basically consigned this to a three week waiting game.

From the start of Gary's recruitment, MSU and IU have always been there. And while it does seem that Gary is giving Kentucky a serious look, the time the other schools have put in to this recruitment shouldn't go overlooked. Harris can get what he is looking for in any school that is on his list, and when you couple that with as tight lipped as the Harris's have been, it makes trying to factor who leads all the more difficult.

At the end of the day, MSU getting the final visit could be the deciding factor in convincing him to don Green&White.

I wouldn't want to put much of my money anywhere but, with gun to my head, I'd pick MSU for the same reason bmrabbitt is suggesting.

IU is a longshot at this point. He's either going to UK or he's going to Purdue/MSU. Depends what he decides hes looking for. This weekend is obviously big with his Kentucky visit.
