'12 MI PF Matt Costello (MSU Verbal)

  • Bay City Western lost in the Regional semi-final (stopping me from going to that regional final vs Saginaw...) to Flint Northwestern, . Matt had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

  • ate dinner with some folks who watched him play last night and they said they were unimpressed and said they thought he got pushed around a lot, looked slow/unathletic, and said naymick was toons better coming out of HS.

that said, my buddy whole plays pro ball overseas was impressed with him earlier this year so i will tend to side with his judgement over a 50yr old womens.

stats don't lie, right? kid puts up monster numbers as far as im concerned.

anybody else have any info on how he played last night?

  • I was there....NW shot lights out and the one thing that hurt BCW this year was quick guards and that happened against last night. Short of bringing the ball up court and passing it to himself not much Costello could do. He was fine, not his best game but certainly not his worst either. Just his guards couldn't match-up and that is the difference for BCW last year who could handle it.

  • I watched Kalin Lucas play one HS game and was convinced he wasn't going to cut it. I watched Travs Trice get pushed around in the Moneyball league last summer and thought he'd be lucky to get off the bench. I also thought Ray Weathers would leave EL as a legend. Bottom line, you need to watch a good amount of ball in different environments. Luckily thats what coach does. Costello is going to be a factor immediately (damn, I hope I'm not wrong again).

  • Give him one year of Banging with A Payne and D Nix. I think Matt kind of went unchallenged either individually or as a team most of his senior year to maximize his potential. He will grow immensely as a Spartan Freshman. Fighting for rebounds with B Dawson, Gary Harris, Derrick Nix, A Payne and company every day? He will defintely continue to improve, and that is saying a lot because he is already very good, he will just have the people around him every day to continue to challenge him. I am looking forward to having him on the squad next season.

  • Hard to say how he'll do out the gate, IMO.

He has incredible offensive touch and body control for his age, but not a lot of lift. He's also going against guys half his size, so who can say how he'll do against competition his own height and weight?

If he learns early on how to score "crafty" against shotblockers and develops a jumphook, he could play immediately. I really wonder if he has much of a chance to beat Gauna, entering his 3rd year in the system and not a shabby offensive player himself, out for the starting job.

    Gotta love competiton...

  • Learned something new today. Matt is a great thrower in high school track. He is seeded 2nd in the discus and 5th in the shotput in the D1 track meet. Shows how he is a pretty strong kid

  • Congrats to Matt Costello - named a 2012 PARADE All-American!

  • Per 247, Matt will enroll in June 28th. Based on my impressions of his character, work ethic, and skill I expect him to be a contributor off the bench from day one and have a fantastic career. Best of luck to him!

EDIT: I just saw the article somebody posted about his bro but still a good reminder!

I don't know if people know this, or if it has been talked about on here, but Matt has a twin brother John. John is 6'4, 240 lbs. 5 inches shorter and 5 lbs heaving than Matt. They have played together since they were kids, and John is an absolute beast. Along with Matt he made basketball 1st team all conference in the Saginaw Valley League his Sr. year. He was also actually a very good football player until he retired after his Jr. year:

"The 6-foot-4, 250-pound offensive lineman was a Bay City Times Dream Teamer, a first-team all-Saginaw Valley League pick and an all-state selection by the Associated Press as a junior and was perhaps the hottest college prospect in the area, drawing considerable Division I attention."

I know that John isn't the same caliber of player Matt will be facing in the B1G, but growing up and playing out in the driveway with a 'big' brother who isn't afraid to push you around has to count for something, right?

He also had a 6'9 teammate, Brandon Havercamp, that graduated a year ahead of him who went on to play for DII SVSU. Again, not as talented, but a big athletic body to play/practice/learn against.

Matt also faced some good competition in the SVL, a league that produces some pretty good athletes and teams, including the Class A State Champs this past year in Saginaw High. From what I have seen Matt is not afraid to get physical and was dominant offensively and defensively in the several games I was able to see him play, including BCW's final 4 run against some very good teams. Not saying he is ready right now, but I am confident he will be able to adjust to and excel in B1G style play.

PS- Matt is also a great ball handler for his size. BCW used him often to beat the press and he looked comfortable dribbling the ball up the floor. Can't wait to see him play again.

PPS- That is John below in the dual knee braces & Matt throwing down at the Breslin. Could get used to seeing that.

  • The whole "size and talent" argument is muted in this day and age. AAU and other basketball camps see to this. He has already had plenty of opportunities to match up against some of the best bigs in the country. He was evaluated mostly on these performances and was ultimately offered a scholarship. The good news is that he simply dominated his senior season while adding to his already substantial size.
