'12 MI PG Denzel Valentine (MSU Verbal)

Sexton is one of the best teams in the state and although I have not seen a game this year I have heard from others Denzel is really getting his teammates involved.

I'm not sure how often he shoots the ball but he is averaging approx. 7-9 points per game and 6-7 assists.

Will try to keep updatingthese threads for those interested in how a commitment is doing.

I talked to sevral people who saw the above game and they all said that even though Denzell didn't score many points he was dominant. Sounds like he is really trying to hone his playmaking skills. I look forward to seeing his game evolve.

  • @DaveTelep After Kyle Anderson, Denzel Valentine is the next most unique player in the class. Passes, blue collar. Plays a PG guards a SF

  • Nice rivals write up on Denzel from the Spiece.

    1. Denzel Valentine is going to be a hotly debated prospect
Each year there are a few guys that cause a lot of discussion among those that evaluate players. This year, Denzel Valentine is looking as if he's going to be one of those guys.
A 6-foot-5 wing who has committed to play at Michigan State, the product of Lansing (Mich.) Sexton is one of the most unique players in the class of 2012. Playing with the Michigan Mustangs in Ft. Wayne, he did a little bit of everything. When his team needed him to handle the ball, he did so. When it needed him to make some shots, he did that, too. Valentine is also a good passer and has a well developed post-up game.
On the other hand, he's not the most athletic guy in the world and the - for lack of a better description - "old man" game he plays doesn't appeal to everyone. What should appeal to everybody more, though, is that Valentine seems to win a lot more than lose, and he's a leader on the floor.

  • Interesting comment about his athleticism. Similar things have been said about Jabari Parker as well. He has matured and grown into his body and I wouldn't be surprised if Valentine did as well. The good thing is he is fundamentally sound and if he is able to gain some more lateral quickness and bounce he will be a real tough cover.

DV is a lot more athletic than people give him credit for.

What I know is that he has all the intangibles you'd wish for in a player. He has incredible court vision, a high basketball IQ, amazing leadership, and plays better in the clutch. He may never gain the athletecism of a Dwuan Anderson or Gary Harris, but he won't have to be that type of player to be successful.

I agree. His basketball IQ will help mitigate any physical limitations (and he doesn't really have any).

  • The guys watching all the AAU tournaments get enamoured with the human highlight guys. But its often the human highlight guys who show up with a tool box that needs more work because their athleticism has been covering flaws in the rest of their games.

A 6'5" widebody who can post up and pass is a headache for opposing coaches.

  • #85 in the latest Rivals rankings.

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/rankings/rank-2509

    Others:
    26. Gary Harris
    48. Matt Costello
    60. Kenny Kaminski

Thought Harris would be in the teens and Kaminski in the 50s, but these rankings look pretty good.

    Valentine: 96(-10)
    Costello: 66
    Kaminski: 77

  • Recent highlight video of Denzel. Really like his last two highlights, but seems to be a lot of pregame warm-ups in this vid too.

    Denzel Valentine 2012 Lansing Sexton

http://www.michiganprepstars.com Denzel Valentine highlights from the 2011 Best Buy Classic in Chicago. Denzel led Sexton to a Class B title in 2011 and has committed to Michigan State for the 2012 class. He is a leading candidate for Mr. Basketball.

  • I have seen Denzel play three times and love his game. He can play and defend three positions and can seamlessly change position from one play to the next. He is dynamic, aggressive, skilled and has great court sense and leadership qualities.. He seems to never let up and can really make a team go. Initially I can see him being very valuable off the bench. He has to be one of the most underrated guys in his class.

  • Some quick hitters on Denzel from this weekend in Las Vegas:

    ebosshoops Eric Bossi
Denzel Valentine so much better in a team setting. Michigan state pledge has really developed a quick release.

    DaveTelep Dave Telep
    Denzel Valentine. Winner.

    jeffborzello Jeff Borzello
Denzel Valentine is very crafty with his finishes in the lane...utilizes the floater effectively and doesn't get too deep in the lane.

    Denzel Valentine
(Lansing, Mich./Sexton) 2012, SF, 6-5, 205 pounds College: Michigan State
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo could have found himself a guy with more athleticism or size, but not with the same instincts and intangibles. Would you believe he went to the post and pulled the hidden-ball trick on one possession? He makes clutch 3s and sees the floor like a point guard. He's got no real collegiate position but he's a winner and Izzo will figure out what to do with him once he gets to campus.

One thing that I really like to hear from all the recruiting analysts is they always describe Denzel as a winner.

  • Great to hear. Two words I've always used to describe himmare "crafty" and "smart". His athleticism isn't below average as many seem to think, saw him drive the lane and put one down many times.

  • Nice comments by the self styled "cognoscenti" but I still say they underrate him.

    Familiar shades of Draymond Green.

Not the worst comparison in the world.

Both of these guys never take a play off. Watching Denzel is just a treat for the basketball purist. He plays like he owns the court. Carlton must have handed him a basketball the minute he was born.

  • Stood next to Valentine at the All Star game Saturday, he's huge for a pg. I can't wait for this kid. Can't wait!

Spartan fans are going to LOVE this kid. I have seen him play a few times, and can honestly say he is one of the most underrated players in the country. Big time talent.
