'12 MI PG Denzel Valentine (MSU Verbal)

  • From the LSJ on last night's game against Jackson. Sexton won 69-59:

Denzel Valentine had 18 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocked shots to lead Sexton (2-0, 2-0) to a CAAC Blue win over Jackson (0-3, 0-2).

  • Nice pic of his athleticism

  • Hot damn this kid is insane. Is there anything he can't do?

    Next question.

    Cuba Gooding Jr

  • He's tall, rangy, sturdy, has quick feet, is oppurtunistic and aggressive, very smart and can pass the ball on a dime with amazing velocity and accuracy to anywhere on the court - I saw a perfect quarterback.

  • Sounds like the Big Reds frontcourt took a hit Friday (Hayes injured). I wonder if Denzel will move inside (ala Magic) for the rest of the year.

Spartan fans are going to LOVE this kid. I have seen him play a few times, and can honestly say he is one of the most underrated players in the country. Big time talent.

I totally agree. He can do it all, and is way underrated.

    Its five o'clock somewhere.

No chance. Sure he'll slide down and play a little 4 on defense every now and then but he's almost averaging double digit assists. The importance of his role as a playmaker far exceeds any role he could potentially play as a fill-in post man.

But wow has his athleticism ever improved over the past year or so. His leg injury as a soph really took a lot of that away from him but as you can see, he's back and better than ever. The work he's put in with his personal trainer is starting to show up in spades.

  • I think he is the kind of kid that isn't going to really pop out at you during an AAU game like A. Payne would, but when you watch him play a real basketball game, the kid is outstanding.

You can see from the picture as well, he is extremely long with very big hands.

Hayes will be ok. He tweaked his knee but played last night. Denzel went off and had 17 points and 17 boards in a win over Romulus last night.

That would be called a "true" double-double.

  • Went and saw Denzel play Kalamazoo Central tonight, KC is the two time defending class A champion. Sexton raced out to a quick lead and at times was up by as many as 24 or so. Denzel only shot twice that i can remember, both 3's, he hit one.

KC runs a stifling full court press and Sexton primarily used Denzel to break it. He had a couple truly amazing passes and his vision looked superb. I was left wondering a couple times how he was even able to see the guy he passed to. KC tied it up at 60 with about 4 minutes to play but they stopped hitting shots and Sexton was able to hold on.

It would've been nice to see him shoot more but he really didn't need to, his teammates were all hitting their shots and he seemed content to distribute and focus on defense. I think his final stat line was close to 3 pts, 6 boards, 8-10 assists, a couple steals and 3 blocks.

No way Sexton would've won without him, every time he got a breather they seemed completely incapable of breaking the press.

  • A lot of Spartan fans are going to just crap their pants when they see this kid for the first time. Everybody is talking about Gary Harris, Branden Dawson, etc., but Denzel is kind of forgotten which just blows me away. This is the most talented kid I've seen come out of Lansing since Magic. He reminds me so much of Steve Smith. I can't wait to see him in Green!!

    Its five o'clock somewhere.

  • yeah he was impressive to watch, he threw flashy passes but they were flashy because they had to be for the situation. It was good to see, teams haven't really been able to press us since we've had Draymond, it looks like that trend will continue next year with Valentine.

  • I am not going to post about Denzel anymore - I'm getting paranoid that I might be suffering from irrational exhuberance - I love his game so much. But as a side note I am pretty impressed with K-Central coach, Mike Thomas. Three years as a head coach - two titles and a runner-up - if it hadn't been for Appling's out-of-his-mind game he would have had a third title. Now he is playing Sexton - the team most think is the best team in any class this year - tough. I have seen his teams play four times and I don't know how he gets his kids to play that intense from tip-off to final buzzer. This guy might have a future in coaching,

Hasn't Thomas only lost something like 11 games in his career? He is very impressive.

  • I went to KC and my senior year was Thomas' first season. KC had always had a lot of talent but could never make it past the first round of regionals. He came in and it's been night and day. The team plays such tough defense that regardless of the amount of offensive talent on the team they're always going to be competitive. The guy definitely has a future in coaching, he's less than 30 years old and has had way too much success with different sets of key players on his teams.

The most impressive thing about Thomas is what he did before last years state championship game:

"Three Central players -- one starter and two key reserves -- broke curfew Friday night, and coach Mike Thomas was faced with a dilemma he did not see as a dilemma.Thomas, 27, did not bench the three for the first quarter or first half. He suspended them for the entire game, a game that could make Central back-to-back state champs."

  • Why are we talking about this person in Denzel's thread?

It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Van.

I must be crazy to be in a loony bin like this.

  • Valentine went for another triple double on Friday with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. His team lost on Saturday against Pershing 81-80, but he appeared to have had a good game with 18 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals, but made a critical mistake by fouling a 3 point shooter with 15 seconds left and fouling out. Still it's pretty hard not to get very excited about this kid's versatilityhoops
