I wouldn't say they are out, but their chances took a hit with Weber gone.

I have to be honest, I'm not 100% sure that's true. I'm not at all confident that Parker was likely headed to Illinois under Weber. Groce is an excellent recruiter and doesn't have some of the problems that the end of the Weber regime was laboring under. Rocking the boat and getting someone new in there might actually help Illinois. It's an uphill battle but it was under Weber, too.

Then again, I'm sure Duke could provide them as well, but further from home..

This is my thinking as well. He has a perfect example in Green as to how he would be used. He's also just seen what an amazing year Green had. At the same time Duke can throw Singler out there as an example of how Parker would be used.

Hopefully, it comes down to location. MSU is closer to home and his road games in conference would also be closer to home than any game played in Durham (or the ACC).

I thought you could not hire a coach to get a recruit to come to your school. I thought the Beasley recruiting at Kansas State triggered the rule.

You can't hire someone to a non-coaching position. FWIW, an AAU coach on another Illinois board thinks it's down to MSU and Duke. I find it interesting there's suddenly all this love for Illinois coming out of the Parker camp after Weber's gone. Looks to me like a PR campaign to ease his way to an out of state program.

I think this is 100% correct.

  • There was no way in hell Parker was going to Illinois as long as Weber was the coach. With Groce I think the chances are much better. Groce was previously recruiting top 20 recruit from Simeon Kendrick Nunn to Ohio. Nunn is visiting Illinois this week, and if he commits (which seems to be a good bet) that would really help in getting Parker to come to Illinois. This is probably the first time I've felt good about Illinois' chances with him. Still I'd say Duke or Kentucky are probably favorites.

Kendrick Nunn is a fringe top 50 recruit at best, definitely not top 20 though.

It'll be interesting to see if this is genuine interest from Nunn and Parker or if they're just helping Robert Smith's campaign to become a UI assistant coach.

Rivals has him at #18 overall.

The Nunn interest definitely seems genuine as his father was praising Groce and said Kendrick enjoyed his trip to Ohio.

That is what all the rumors tend to be suggesting, of course they are just rumors. But based on the track record with those schools it certainly seems probable.

Sounds like it's still pretty wide open.

  • I have to admit it will be pretty amusing if he ends up at BYU.

The one thing I am hearing is that we shouldn't be surprised if he is still uncommited this time next year.

Hmmm, interesting. I've always heard the opposite (from numerous places), that the family is targeting a fall 2012 decision. Not locked in stone but that's the goal.

  • Yeah, that was the last report in the press. But that is what some people are saying, could be pure speculation.

  • Looking to make a decision in the early signing period, makes his recruitment sound a lot more like a typical Izzo recruit.

His Dad said they want to decide in the fall. I also remember him saying he was making a list by this summer.

Also, he said he wants to play for a coach he has a relationship with, a system he can fit in, and wants to contend for a national title.

Michigan State is looking good in my opinion.

EDIT: My opinion doesn't matter. This is stuff I have seen in articles, not verbatim and recruiting is recruiting so take it with a big old grain of salt.

  • Parker was named Gatorade National POY, just the 4th underclassman to win. Also the 1st ever underclassman to win Illinois' Mr. Basketball.

  • Interesting note from Dave Telep's chat on ESPN

    Q:

Washington so far has only signed one person for the 12' class, but are looking to bounce back in 2013. Do you think they end up landing Aaron Gordon and Jabari Bird or Jabari Parker?

    Dave Telep (2:18 PM)

Washington is in there with Aaron Gordon and he's got himself a list denoting serious Pac-12 interest. They'll be a factor. They've already had Jabari Parker on campus a few times. I've always said that until we know Jabari's father who doesn't fly, is cool with him going away, keep distance in mind.

Is he an only child? I have a hard time believing that his parents would move their entire family to be closer to one son.

This is some pretty odd speculation. Even by recruiting website standards.
