'13 MI PG Derrick Walton

  • Didn't notice any posts on him yet in the forum.

UMHoops had a little piece on him today from the Adidas Invitational. Said this:

"You said you are pretty confident that Michigan State is going to offer, what makes you believe that?

DW: It was supposed to be on my unofficial visit but they said I didn’t seem too excited about it. I don’t know why, so I guess they are prolonging it a little bit."

Interesting statement- seems to want to be Green, but MSU holding off for the time being.

Is anyone besides Steve Schwanda saying that? He's the only one I see thus far.

  • Looks like UMHoops has confirmed the offer with Walton.

  • UMHoops said his AAU coach confirmed. He didn't want to believe Steve either....

    And I'm late.

  • Is this what the putz on the main board was referring to? Lol. Sweet. The gap is closed. UM gets another commit w/o an MSU offer. The last thing we need in '13 is a pg. We have two ships available. One if we land Harris. If our only commit in '13 was a player of waltons stature i would be extremely worried. Best part is we will still get the top '13 in state player of we want. James Young is a 5 star mcdaa level talent.

Have you guys offered Young? I heard he had some pretty serious grade issues.

I haven't heard much past 2012 due to the Gary Harris saga. I just know we offered Jabari. I also heard some serious talk about the 2014 kid from GR. But it's been pretty quiet. I believe what happens with Harris will dictate where MSU goes with recruiting. Just not much room. I haven't heard about grade issue with Young but again I may be out of the loop.

There's a toilet in the kitchen!

Obviously it doesn't matter now, but a lot of reports that he was about to receive an offer from Izzo.

  • Honestly, I don't see that as a possiblity. Not sure if you're up to snuff on the MSU scholarship situation but if we land Gary Harris we will have 1 ship left for 2013. Based on the latest quotes from Harris he will visit MSU, PU and IU and wants to be done in November.

IU currently doesn't have room. PU was late to the game. If MSU lands Harris, which is looking better and better, and offered and landed Walton in 2013, Walton would be their ONLY 2013 commit unless someone leaves early.

MSU has ZERO need for a PG in 2013 if they only have 1 or even 2 ships. They will still have Appling, Trice, DV and BK. I don't believe any of those guys will be early entries for their respective classes.

MSU is in extremely good shape with two elite PG's in 2014 and IMO this lends perfectly to offer them big time PT as we won't have taken a true PG in '12 and '13.

This isn't meant to diminish Waltons abilities but I think this worked out well for both schools. I was really hoping we did not offer Walton or Morris. There is really no need for a 2013 PG at MSU unless it was an elite, elite talent.

The good thing is if we miss on G. Harris hopefully we can swoop up James Young who sounds like he could be even better than Harris.

Oh, and it sounds like Drake Harris will commit by summers end.

Doesn't seem like it would be anything too crazy, Young has plenty of time left in HS.

  • My two cents. Pretty similar to what GreenMonet is saying. I think that's the conventional wisdom and it's correct. Still, everything is fluid and could shake out a lot of ways.

  • What would make Walton jump at a UM offer when an MSU offer was possibly forthcoming? Maybe that UM just sent a sophomore point guard to the NBA. I think that our single biggest drawback in recruiting is the paucity of players we have sent to the NBA in the past several years. Showing that template to a potential recruit has to be very influential.

    Beastial

  • I kind of wish we could somehow get him, but with so few scholarships its hard. Ive always liked him and would have liked a harris and walton commitment this year. I would feel a little better about the loss though if harris and parker committed. biggrin

Doubt it. Walton was one of three guards UM had the spot offered to, and UM applied the heat. Walton compares in no way with Morris (way smaller, better shooter). Walton, at this early stage, does not project as a pro. 6 foot guards just don't make it very often in the NBA anymore, unless you happen to be Iverson-quick.

Your analysis (and anyone else's) of Walton's future probably is at variance with his own. I assure you that a hot 15 year old prospect that is being pursued by major programs and is being looked at by all the gurus has a far rosier (but maybe less realistic) projection of his future than you. Here's a tip for you. They ALL see themselves as future NBA players.

I don't need tips from you, thanks. Unless you are Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, or Kyrie Irving, all of whom were identified as NBA players VERY early, you aren't making it to the NBA at 6 feet. It's a league for big people now.
