Kid has really blown up lately and dominated the Nike Elite 100 camp this past weekend, and only has good things to say about MSU. He should be MSU's first commit for the 2013 class

"I’m a big fan of Michigan State," he said. "I really like the way they play. It would be an honor to play there in the future, if things turned out that way."

  • I know intrpdtrvlr views him as an either/or prospect with Harris, but if he is as good as advertised, he is no plan B prospect regardless of who else Izzo is recruiting (and I'm implying that Izzo would try to bring in both Young and Harris).

    James Young (Troy, Mich./Troy)
    2013, SG, 6-6, 200 pounds
Young is a lefty scorer who is wired to put the ball in the basket. He is an excellent athlete with very good skills to match. He is a very good slasher to the basket and is incredible in transition. He also has the ability to play above the rim and is very versatile. When motivated, Young is one of the more dynamic talents in the 2013 class. He is a good rebounder who can rebound in traffic and then push the break. He is a streaky shooter with range to 20 feet, but as long as he stays consistent he will be one of the best players in the 2013 class.

  • So if we could get a commit from Young early along with one of the many PG from the state in '13, would we do that and not worry about bring in possibly the best player in the country from Chicago?

Unless somebody transfers/leaves early, there is only one scholarship open for 2013 (Assuming Harris commits). I still think one player will leave, and Izzo will be able to sign a PG to go along with a SF. If Parker wants to tag along, I'm sure Izzo will find a spot for him.

  • If I was in charge (thankfully for MSU, I'm not) I would take a top 35 Junior, from, Michigan, who wants to be a Spartan, over a top 5, one and done talent, who is at best a long-shot.

That would leave Trice and Appling at PG with maybe Valentine, Kearney or Anderson available to help at that position as well (assuming MSU is unable to sign a PG in the 13 class).

Young with one of the in-state PG's would be good.

  • I have to agree on Young, while Harris obviously would be a prize recruit, I do like the idea of taking a kid who is dreaming of playing for MSU. Not only that but Young is still growing, he's 6'5"-6'6" now, taller than Harris. He plays a shallower position, small forward, and has the possibility of being just as highly regarded as a player. Here's another article where he states that he may grow to around 6'9"

If Izzo does bring in Harris and Young, he better have a third spot in 2013 and I hope it's someone who can give some post minutes. If that's it, that's just too many wings and not enough big men.

Curious, I haven't heard that Izzo offered Young today so maybe he disagrees with us.

I gotta think he will be offering. Maybe he is holding off until he hears what happens with Harris?

Goes to practice 25 minutes late because of tutoring. After he was ruled academically ineligible halfway through his freshman year, but really seems to have his head in the right place now. Also, he grew 2.5 inches in the past year.

Not many people are mentioning any players leaving earlier. I could easily see Appling and Payne (would be seniors) being gone by then, which would open up two additional scholarships. Given Payne's athleticism and length, I'm sure NBA GMs would be willing to take a gamble on him regardless if he's ready or not. Appling, I think will be a complete stud by his junior year and wouldn't be surprised to see him bolt for the NBA.

Another possibility, although a long shot is Dawson. I think he needs at least three years to develop his ball skills to go along with his body and athleticism before he's ready, but who knows. With a solid freshman year and a summer to work on those skills he could blow up his sophomore year.

Obviously a lot of that is hypothetical, but I think they are real possibilities. I could easily see MSU with 3-4 scholarships for 2013, assuming they don't get Harris.

  • What's everybodys take on him, very high rankings this early in the process any chance you think he will get an offer soon? Also what's are chances he will choose us?

I don't think anybody else will be offered a scholarship in this class because there is so much uncertainty in the 2012 class. You got Gary Harris who still hasn't made a choice and D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera who MSU is still recruiting.

If Young is as good as advertised, you don't hold back an offer for him because you're waiting to hear back from another kid.

Yeah, it sounds like MSU has recently been recruiting Smith-Rivera. But, MSU is not in his top 5, according to this website. I don't even think he has an offer, though. Maybe his interest in MSU would change if he had an offer.

  • From ESPN assessment of the first day of the LBJ Skills Academy

Young jumped out during the shooting drills. The long, lean lefty was extremely good in the wide pindown screen shooting drill where he knocked down midrange jumpers with a smooth, confident stroke. Young also can make plays off the bounce, but his jumper grabbed everyone's attention. He is tough and competitive, and we can't wait to check him out in a full scrimmage.

  • We may not want to get our hopes to high just yet due to the fact he may have some serious academic issues. That aside, he certainly is very highly thought of throughout the camp circuits etc. This next year could be the key to how this all plays out.
