'14 MI SG Drake Harris (MSU Verbal)

  • He was at the game today as was Bo Zeigler

  • Drake Harris was at the game today. #1 football and basketball player in MI for the class of 2014, according to those who know MI HS sports.

  • By 2014 Dawson and Harris will likely go pro. Leaving...

    Trice-Valentine-(Jones/Lyle)
    Kearney-(Harris)
    Byrd-(Young/Zeigler)
    Kaminski-Guana-(Alexander)
    Costello-(Okafor)-(Woodson?)

So we have room for Zeigker and/or Young in 2013 (or RS Woodson or Jackson) and Harris plus Jones or Lyle in 2014. Remember Parker is a legit 1 & done.

  • We need an all-white front with Byrd-Kaminski-Costello. Haha-JK

I think guys like Trice, BK, Guana & Byrd will be a sick senior class!

  • Harris was front row tonight for the game.

He sat near Dion Sims the entire game. Just after halftime Dantonio came over, talked to Sims for a little while, and the two started talking to Harris. He seemed to enjoy himself tonight.

  • I think he will play two sports and give us 13 schollies plus him!

    Applingbyrd

  • That is a perfect scenario, get a 5 star basketball player, that doesn't use a scholarship?

    Thats sick...

I can see a lot of unintended consequenses coming into play here. 1. He would not join the team until we are into the Big 10 season and obviously would take a while to get into the rotation. 2. It looks like we may actually have a surfeit of talent and any minutes he got would be taken away from guys who had worked for months and played in important non league games to get those minutes - this would not be a Trannon situation when we were very thin at the power forward position. And how does that work for team chemistry. 3. If he really has his sights (and of course he does) on a professional career, at some point he will decide to concentrate on one sport or the other - he would never realize his basketball potential by joining the team mid season.

  • I think he needs to declare if he wants to be a Football player 1st or a Basketball player, basically if he wants the NBA or NFL more. If he wants to be a football player 1st, then I could see him playing both sports, but only as a reserve on the basketball team. However, if he wants to be a basketball player, I don't think he could play both sports.

  • So instead of say Russell Byrd as your backup wing, you have a uber athletic currently 5 star kid being the back-up 2 or 3. I love Byrd, but I don't see how this is a dropoff for the team.

And I think as far as his development, basketball is actually very good for a college wide receiver, who is going to play limited minutes. He will have conditioning to provide spot minutes where he is expected provide defense, energy, and transition buckets. Wide Receivers don't need the development of the ultra intense weight lifting regimen a player like Trannon would have needed to play his position in football. He can then end in April and join the team for Spring Ball.

I think by the end of his sophomore year he will decide which sport is a better opportunity for him.

But then even if he chooses basketball, his scholarship still counts toward football, because that is how it works with multisport athletes. So we will get him full-time as a basketball player without using a schollie. Or he will be a stud Wide Receiver and help the football team by committing 100% to football. I don't see how its bad for him or for us.

I think you need to reread Trannon's bio.

  • Saw Harris play last night against Greenville. GR Christian came in with 3 losses on the year while Greenville was 15-0. Christian took a 1 point lead into halftime, but Greenville used a 4th quarter run to take a 7-9 point lead. Greenville ended up hitting a shot with 3.8 seconds left to go up 2, and Harris' halfcourt heave at the buzzer fell short.

    Now on to Harris:

I was sitting with numerous high school football and basketball coaches who have seen him play both sports and coached against him in both sports, and the talk between all of them was that Harris' future lies on the football field. One coach said he's the absolute real deal at WR. Said they had no answer for him. People asked why they didn't double team him more and he said they did every time but it didn't matter.

On the basketball court, my initial impression of Harris, his future in the college games lies at the PG position rather than SG. Very smooth handles that I had not heard about before, but not the smoothest jumper. Not a bad jumper by any means, just not totally comfortable.

After 3 quarters I had a hard time disagreeing with the football talk about him. He had been a total non factor, with 2 maybe 4 points. With about 4 minutes left Harris finally started showing something. He had a crossover, pull up 3 with a man in his face, had a couple steals and started getting to the rim at will. Brought his team back from down 9 in about a minute and a half and hit 2 free throws to tie it up.

The question everyone kept asking was, where has this been the whole game? Granted, I thought the coaching for Christian was poor. Ran almost nothing for Harris. With a player like that they should have been running iso for Harris just about everytime down the court. Harris obviously has the ability to get to the basket anytime he wants. Christian also had another sophomore that could potentially be a D1 guy. Very long and athletic. Might have had a triple double with points, rebounds, and blocks. Currently he's a post player in a wing body, but if he could grow a few inches in the next couple years, he could be solid.

Overall, Harris showed flashes of great play at the end. VERY fast and athletic. Great handles. But a non factor for 3 quarters. I'd love to watch him a few more times to get a better feel for his game.

  • The other Soph is Darohn Scott, FWIW.

    ChuckandLiz

  • Is Harris hurt? I see he didn't play against Holland Christian last night...maybe just resting up for the tournament?

    Numbers Game

  • Guys, the more I watch GR Christian play, the more I think we should be after Darohn Scott. Harris is a very good player and I would take him too, but he has a lot of work to do on his jumper. Once he gets that down, he will be tough to stop.

However, Scott is already a very good defender, and his game is noticeably improving each week that I see him. He is very athletic, a legit 6'8" already, and at this stage, has more offensive game than Marquise Gray had as a senior. He may not be a 4 or 5 star yet, but his stock is going to rise this summer. Something to keep an eye on moving forward. Perhaps he needs his own thread?

    Numbers Game

  • Harris' GR Christian team knocked off unbeaten Godwin Heights tonight 60-51 in the regional finals, and move on the the quarterfinals.

Harris had 22 points, including 12-16 from the FT line.

DaRohn Scott had 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 9 blocks. Maybe he does need his own thread.

If he plays both, would he be on a football or basketball scholarship? Or does it depend on which sport he wants to focus on?

Not sure how it all works, would love some info.
