Boy, you are taking a risk with that bold prediction on this site. I'm thinking about guaranteeing it just to one-up you! Seriously, I think the budding relationship between Jones and Alexander can only be good for MSU's chances.
Curie center Cliff Alexander didn’t play at the Run-N-Slam tournament last weekend in Fort Wayne, Ind., because he was busy with prom. While he was off trying to be a normal high school kid, rumors began swirling that he had narrowed his college list to a final three: Michigan State, Kentucky and Illinois.
According to Irvin, his club coach, Alexander’s recruitment is still wide-open, and he is going through the process of narrowing down his list.
‘‘I think that rumor got started because those were the three schools that were showing up at his games the most,’’ Irvin said. ‘‘Once [Kentucky coach John] Calipari shows up people get nervous.’’
There’s a general perception that Michigan State has been Alexander’s favorite for the last few years, but Irvin doesn’t agree.
‘‘I don’t think they have a slight lead; I think it’s even,’’ Irvin said. ‘‘I think Illinois gained a lot of ground in the last couple of months.”
Alexander seems to improve every week. He had a longer way to go than a lot of elite national recruits, but he has been making up ground by leaps and bounds during the last year.
‘‘Cliff is playing out of his mind right now,’’ Irvin said. ‘‘When it is all said and done, I think he’s going to be pushing [Young center Jahlil Okafor] for the No. 1 spot.’’

That's not good, hmm getting a bad feeling on recruiting for 14 hope I'm wrong, we really need Cliff.
I don't read into Irvin's comments all that much. He's not going to say MSU is the clear leader. It's not his place to make such a comment. The Irvin family is Chicago basketball royalty. Most great players have played for an Irvin at some point. He is respectful to the programs still involved and he wants them out watching his kids all summer.
That being said, Groce has done real solid work in Chicago. He has made peace and repaired a lot of the relationships Weber strained. Not hiring Robert Smith of Simeon was initially thought to be a mistake but proved to be very wise after Smith made a fool of himself last season on the sidelines. The thing working against the Illini with Cliff is the system and track record. Groce does not utilize bigs and coming from a mid-major never had many to work with. I am still hopeful.
Cliff seems like too much of an MSU lean not to go to MSU. I would be pretty shocked if he went elsewhere.
You should never be shocked about anything that happens in recruiting. Decisions are often impacted by outside factors that no one can accurately predict.
Also, most recruits have no loyalty to anyone or anything; perceptions often trump facts and rationality. It's just the society we live in today.
Offered by Miami (FL)
MSU now has 2 Crystal Ball projections and Kentucky 1. Don't really think it means anything besides we are still firmly in the running with Alexander.
I just read that another Illinois player has been granted his release to transfer, and that they are expected to get a transfer from Oregon State to take his place (don't have the players' names right now). The article said that if everything plays out as expected, they will have only 1 scholarship for 2014... obviously they have made Cliff their one and only priority, which explains why people are speculating that they have "made up some ground."
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
Anybody care to share what they said?
Myke Henry leaving has no effect on the 2014 class. They are adding Ahmad Starks who's transferring from Oregon St and expected to get a waiver to play this season. Illinois has one commit (Michael Finke) and will have 2 open spots.
Anyone else have a feeling we're not getting this guy?
laying in the weeds
This would be a big miss. He claimed us as his outright leader for months. It is one of those situations where leading for so long without receiving a commitment might be a bad sign. I hope we can get him though because he is a legitimate top 5 player in the 2014 class. A class of Cliff, Ulis, and a few other solid wings would be good enough for me although I would love to grab Jones and Okafor as well.
Our main competition with him will probably end up being Illinois. Kentucky is expected to get a commitment from Trey Lyles soon and that should fill them up at the 4 and 5 position.
When did he ever claim anybody an outright leader?
A lot of people may have said that or written that but none of those people were Cliff so how could anybody know if that's true.
It's clear that he likes Izzo and Michigan State but he likes Illinois and Kentucky and probably a bunch of other schools too.
I think Cliff enjoys all of the attention and is not ready for it stop anytime soon.
He used to claim us as his leader but has very much backed off that statement since then.
Cliff isn't going to choose early. Never was.
The top players don't like to do that much these days. They commit early, they get less coverage, they drop in the rankings, their "brand" suffers. The players, their coaches (AAU in particular), and their families very often want to maintain the buzz around the player for as long as possible.
These guys haven't even taken their last official visits yet. Long way to go.
That was a long time ago for a kid that says something different everyday.
If there's a direct quote from him in that article, I bet he doesn't remember saying it.
He very well could end up at MSU and I hope he does, but I don't think he's ever had a leader.

"Me, Jahlil, Tyus & Justise have talked about playing together it would be a scary sight we would win a national championship." @humblekid11

Who is Justise?
Justise Winslow, the top-rate SF in the class, out of Houston.
I assume Justise Winslow SF Houston, TX. Has offers from Baylor, Kansas, Duke, and UNC among others. No MSU offer.
Believed to be a Duke/Arizona battle. He is visiting Duke this weekend again for another unofficial visit.
