Julius Mays looking to transfer, MSU on his list.

  • "Julius Mays, a 6-foot-2 guard at Wright State who averaged 14.1 points this past season, announced he'll go elsewhere and be able to play immediately for his final campaign.

Mays told CBSSports.com that his initial list consists of Purdue, Michigan State, Kentucky, Cincinnati and possibly Michigan. "

  • No thanks.

  • It worked okay with Woods last year, but I think it was more out of need than opportunity. Dare i say out of desparation, after our backcourt logjam got clearcut. I personally don't think Izzo feels the need, nor do we have the scholarship available.

  • Next year we have Appling, Trice, Harris, Kearney, Valentine, and Byrd out on the wing. I don't think there's room for another.

  • Part of me wants to beat Purdue yet again for a player they want but I think we are set on the wing.

  • I believe there is one open scholarship available but I don't know if we need him. But he will be a fifth year senior with lots of experience and if he did come to MSU we could probably Red-shirt D. Valentine and K. Kiminski. And it wont effect are 2013 class we will still have 2 open scholarships for 2013. I don't know much about him but its possible he could be that last piece of the puzzle to make MSU a National championship contender.

  • PG. K.Appling T.Trice

    SG.G.Harris J.Mays B.Kearney

    SF.B.Dawson B.Kearney R.Byrd

    PF/C A.Payne D.Nix A.Guana M.Costello (Dawson also at PF)

    Red-Shirt. D.Valentine AND K.Kiminski.

  • Valentine is too good to not play as a Freshman, redshirts should be saved for bigs and injured players. Especially with the depth of talent we are recruiting in 2012, 2013, 2014 and beyond, I would say the program is also better served by reducing the number of 5 year scholarship players, especially wings.

  • I like having 5 year players older and more experienced but I agree Denzel may not want to Red-shirt Izzo may have promised him playing time right away and he MIGHT again MIGHT be to good to Red-Shirt but if MAYS is a good player imagine another fifth year senior added to the team there would be NO week Spots. Talent, Shooting, Experience,Defense, Inside play, Depth Just need a leader to step up! Either way are team will be GREAT next year. I just hope He does not end up you know where.

You are implying that Denzel may not be ready to play as a freshman - that Izzo may have made promises to Valentine that he may regret now that an oppurtunity for Brandon Wood Pt. 2 is available. Have you seen Denzel play? I will loosely quote Izzo on Valentine post-season - "he plays with his head up. He can play 4 positions. He has a chance to make an IMPACT his FIRST year." (caps mine)

  • Remember we are only going to have one Senior! We need a fifth year senior, even if he is average.

NO I am not implying that Denzel won't be ready to play as a freshman as a matter of fact I am expecting him to be a contributor right away and possibly a real good player as a freshman but a Senior J Mays COULD be better and already knows how to play at a high level than Denzel as a FRESHMAN. I aspect Denzel to be REAL GOOD and eventually a better player than Mays but maybe not as a freshman. We do only have one senior on the team ( NIX ) and No I don't think Izzo is regretting Getting Denzel (because he will be good) I just think if there is a possibility to add a solid senior player to MSU it could make the team even better and we would be as Loaded as Loaded can be. But again I really don't know a ton about Mays other than looking at his stats. But Izzo may at least take a look at him. I don't think you can say that he wont even take a look at Mays.

Contributers "right away" don't redshirt. I think it is easier to project how the multi talented, multi positioned Valentine will fit on next year's team than Mays who obviously would be a back up for the freshman Harris ( a role he may not like as a senior). Even as a freshman Valentine is probably far more ready for Spartan basketball than Mays would be as a senior. Valentine already knows the Spartan system and what Izzo expects of him. His Dad was a Spartan and he is a local who has already played tons with his future teammates. It would all be new to Mays.
