They will either get with the program and centralize, or they will die eventually.

I hate to rain on your parade with facts, but Detroit leads the nation in high school dropout rates, as well as teen pregnancy.

Dropping out of school is not "getting with the program", and the birth rate far exceeds the death rate. It's also hard to imagine a person who is less likely to pick up and move than a dropout with dependent children.

You don't realize it now, but you're a tourist. An idealistic, naive tourist. Detroit will break you before you fix it. I've seen this movie before, it always ends the same way.

I've brought plenty of people from out of state to Detroit and most of them come away impressed. Many of them mentioned how different it was from their expectations.

All due respect, and I don't new this facetiously, but that seriously blows my mind. Where we're these people from?

As someone who has lived in other cities and countries, and not a Detroit native so not clouded by "Detroit Pride", I can tell you that there are very few cities in America that I would say are as bad as Detroit.

I have traveled, a lot - on pleasure and business. The only major or mid major US cities that I can honestly say are as bad as Detroit are NOLA, Memphis, Jackson MS - aside from the typical Flint, Gary, Youngstown type cities of course. Even Cleveland, a city that I know well, is nicer than Detroit.

Undortunatwly Detroit is in very rough shape and it will take a long time to dig out.

I also know that those rates are declining. The city core is coming back snd expanding outward. That is a fact too. I am seeing it firsthand. I have to move away in a couple for postgrad training, but I definitely will be back and am no tourist.

I always come away impressed when visiting Detroit. Like the time last month when I was asked by only 4 homeless people in less than 30 minutes for money while eating on a sidewalk patio. I was figuring to be bothered at least 10 times. Things are improving downtown.

I was just in Ferndale not 30 minutes ago and got asked for money twice. What's your point?

His point is that Detroit is still mostly a hell-hole.

No, you don't have any idea why people stay away from Wells.

This is actually a pretty good thread compared to most of the crap that gets posted.

Last night a Nucky thread on this subject got me all riled up. It was a shitty thread, so it got deleted this morning. I still want to say this though:

This isn't about bailouts, this is about evolution. Don't invest in the old residents of Detroit, invest in the new ones. Keep coming down for games, shows, and great meals. If you are young without kids, don't be afraid to do your research and move down here. See what it's like for a year or two. There are people living down here who didn't contribute to the downfall and who want to work for the recovery. More than you realize. We do deserve hope, maybe even some help. End rant getting off soapboxHere are some relevant articles.

The City's disposable income populaton continues to decline which means that in all likelihood Detroit's renaissance isn't going to happen in your lifetime, if ever.

Maybe I don't understand all the academic reasons why this or that won't happen. However, I do know that those of us living here are going to try and prove the negative nancies wrong.
