Are YOU better off now than three years ago?

  • We all have our philisophical points of view relative to the economic approach taken by this administration and previous administrations.

We all speculate how the economy impacts the citizens of the US, but we know intimately how it affects us personally. How about we add our own personal facts to the equation?

    Here are the questions:
    - Are you employed now?
    - Have you lost your means of employment at any time during the last four years?
    - How has your company's gross sales changed over the last four years?
    - Have you been promoted / demoted?
    - How has your base salary changed? (exclude bonuses, exclude stock options, exclude benefits, do not adjust for inflation)
    - Has your benefits package changed substantially?
    - What has been the % of target bonus pay out for your company on average?
To the extent you are self employed approximate the answers as best you can. If you are retired some of these questions apply, some do not. If you haven't entered the workforce yet skip adding your data.

Same job the last 10 years
Gross sales (funding) gone downhill - public school teacher
    Salary stagnant
Benefits cost more and provide less

    House worth less
    2 used cars (paid off)
2 kids who need college assistance

Better off - no. Could be worse - much.

Who knows? But I believe the Pres has a better understanding of my situation than Mitt

  • - Are you employed now?...Yes
    - Have you lost your means of employment at any time during the last four years?...No
    - How has your company's gross sales changed over the last four years?...projected net sales of $34B 2012 vs $20B for 2009
    - Have you been promoted / demoted? Promoted twice
    - How has your base salary changed? (exclude bonuses, exclude stock options, exclude benefits, do not adjust for inflation) Increased double digit percentage.
    - Has your benefits package changed substantially? - No, but in 2005 "ish" we changed to to a high deductable insurance plan which most employees view as a take away
    - What has been the % of target bonus pay out for your company on average? - last year the company paid out 180% of short term incentive bonus target

So you are worse off, but as the "Pres" "understands" you better you will vote for him again.

    Typical union mentality.

Not intentional...those would be good adds.

Housing would be tricky for me because we've moved and upgraded. I would have lost about 10% on the previous house, but the company made me whole.

My retirement accumulation is larger....not sure about percentage, and it's difficult to say what would have happened without constant contribution.....

Pretty sad that you actually think the President of the United States can miraculously help your self apparent sad situation. Worse, is your negativeness, victim mentality and attitude you probably bring in the classroom. If you are looking for a hand out - do us all a favor - and get out of teaching mush and be a Maker - not a taker.

Are you making things up about Nimrod's post, or did my internet connection somehow drop the parts where he said the President can miraculously help him, he thinks he's a victim, he's looking for a handout, and he brings that attitude into the classroom? Because I didn't see any of that.

Golly - who is the negative one? You don't know me or my commitment to the career. My point was that I felt the Pres seems a little bit more aware of the needs of the middle class. My sad situation? I am content with my life and full of hope. No hand out needed here, except for your children. And no animosity towards you. We'll just keep workin on your people skills :)

  • Why doesn't the pres and liberals go after big education then? You have two that need assistance and I will have one soon. I was looking at tuition costs today at several universities. Holy shit. I thought it was high when I was at state.

    And to answer the questions...
Still trying to stay in business.

Would be nice if we could just address the problems, but folk like to paint it as one entity against the other. I acknowledge this is just a small part of the problem in higher ed and politics, but is what's happening now. Did not mean to derail the thread :)

  • I was promoted and my employment is secure. I would receive higher bonuses if the economy was better. My house value has not gone up, and I put money into it, so thats a loss. I dump money into my 401K, not sure where that is going.

Wreak havoc??? Are you effin serious??? The US spends 2k more annually than any other country yet rank 9th in math and science. If you don't think teacher's should accept responsibility for this that's one thing. But don't go blaming it on the gov't for lack of funding when other countries exhibit the ability to do much more with much less

Very well then - more tax breaks for the wealthy, and less funding for all of the public services you expect and think you deserve. You get what you invest in. You're funny as well - vitriol and all - I'll just take my pay cuts and do the best I can for your kids :)

All the Republican replies in this thread are a perfect example of why things will never improve. During the past several months of republican primaries, the right railed against Romney and spoke of how out of touch he is, how his policies change based on who is asking the questions, but now that 'your side' has picked its nominee, you guys will do anything to 'win' regardless of whether those things will be beneficial to the health of the country and despite the fact that you despised Romney only a few months ago.

I am not very happy with Obama (whom i did not vote for). I'm even less happy with congress, and yet even more unhappy with the ideological and corporate hijacking of the government.

Why can't we seriously discuss policies and governmental and economic theory based on prior usage and results and then choose the candidate which alligns himself most closely with those ideals? Everything now is either a popularity contest or a $ contest, but the truth of the matter is, the people will never be the winners in either of those.

What is the purpose of posting here, when there can be no rational discourse? Can't we take a few deep breaths and then talk like we are all Spartans, all humans, and most likely on a personal basis, all pretty good people?

We may disagree over many things, but in the past we were always able to hash things out like adults, make compromises, and move forward. Aren't you guys sick of how politics has turned into an all or nothing forum, where compromise is seen as a detriment?
