BHO clinical diagnosis: Sociopathy or MNPD? What say you WHOTMB?

  • Is he a sociopath or a malignant narcissist?

“Sociopathy” is a strong word, but used by many to describe Obama – not necessarily as a clinical psychiatric diagnosis, but just because the symptoms fit so darn well, as per this typical description: “Sociopaths are often well-liked because of their charm and high charisma, but they do not usually care about other people. They think mainly of themselves and often blame others for the things that they do. They have a complete disregard for rules and lie constantly. They seldom feel guilt or learn from punishments.”

    OR

"One veteran psychiatrist suggested a slightly different diagnosis for Obama, but similar to “sociopathy” in many ways – namely, “malignant narcissistic personality disorder.” The modifier “malignant” signifies the version of “narcissistic personality disorder” that may cross over into criminality.

He even reviewed with me a list of some of the major symptoms of NPD, comparing them with Obama’s behavior as president. Among the key markers: 1) a grandiose view of one’s achievements (everything with Obama is “historic”), 2) an utter inability to handle criticism (everyone criticizing Obama or his policies is attacked as extremist or racist, his White House even condemning Fox News as “not a real news organization”), and 3) lack of genuine empathy (Obama gave a televised speech on the day of the Fort Hood terror attack in which a Muslim U.S. Army major shot 45 Americans, 13 fatally. With the entire nation reeling in shock and yearning for strong, reassuring words from their commander in chief, Obama instead engaged in small talk and an inane “shout-out” for two full minutes before even mentioning that the worst terrorist attack on our soil since 9/11 had just occurred hours earlier.)

To be sure, many mainstream analysts, including Pulitzer-winning columnist and former psychiatrist Charles Krauthammer, have repeatedly pointed to Obama’s extreme narcissism. Regardless of the “diagnosis,” one thing is certain: We’re talking about a person who absolutely does not consider serial lying to be in any way immoral or problematic."

So which is it? Should we start a poll?

  • I'm not saying it's healthy but there has to be a certain level of arrogance (a massively high level in fact) in any person to even consider running for President. Just think about the premise itself. You have to believe that you alone are the most capable person of leading a country of 300 million people from all walks of life. Whether that level translates to narcissism is an entirely different debate. However I will say this. Every party nominee from the past 100 years regardless of party (and I'm including 3rd party ones) has been extremely arrogant. Anyone who has sought the nomination from either of the major parties in the past 150 years has been extremely arrogant. This personality features transcends party lines. I'm willing to bet that Krauthammer never said those things about Bush though.

Honest question...so both of you feel that all high achievers are diagnosable as sociopaths or have personality disorders?

I think "most" (never say "all") high achievers have a high degree of self confidence. And as Sprtnbrn said, "whether that level translates to narcissism is an entirely different debate."

I've been doing a lot of studying on the topic of mental preparation for athletes as of late. Those at the highest levels of their sport often believe they are one of the best, if not THE best at what they do. They have supreme confidence in their skills and abilities. I don't think it's a stretch to say that similar attitudes would apply to a situation like a governor or president.

I'm not saying all high achievers but in this case it literally comes with the territory. Again there has to be a certain level of arrogance for someone to think they alone should be the leader of a country like the US. Hell it's no secret that Clinton exhibited signs of being a sociopath (see his chasing of women). This isn't just a US president problem, either. Silvio Berlusconi was a full fledged megalomaniac in Italy. You either have to be one of two things to run for President. You either have to be an idiot for thinking you alone are the best for the job or be unbelievably arrogant. Obama isn't dumb (neither was Bush 2, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan, etc) so that leaves the latter.

Bingo and it brings up one of my favorite debates from the other board regarding Tiger Woods. Some people seemed shocked that Tiger thought he could and deserved to bag any woman he wanted. I thought the opposite. It was a natural part of being told that he alone was possibly the greatest golfer ever. When you hear that and start to believe it, of course he wanted everything including women. Phil Mickelson always thought he could make the impossible shot and at least had to try (there's always a chance). No wonder he was a degenerate gambler. Individual sport athletes are wired in such a way that they have to believe those things.

Confidence is just one hallmark of sociopathy or narcissism. Habitual lying and manipulation, along with an inability to see your own flaws or faults that are more pathological.

"For a super-ambitious and vainglorious person such as Obama, lying is a vital and creative power. Lies open doors that would otherwise remain shut. Thus in a very real sense, for Obama, lies are “magic words,” the invocation of which represents the exercise of real power – power to impress voters, raise money, demonize critics, win elections, pass legislation and transform a nation. Ordinary people don’t possess this power, as they are constrained from such brazen lying by their conscience and/or the fear of being caught. But a highly narcissistic person like Obama feels he has the freedom – indeed, the mandate – to reshape America by creatively speaking into existence his preferred version of reality, without regard for any higher standard of truth. In other words, to lie."

Performing a sport and trying to manipulate an entire nation into a "fundamental transformation" that he never really articulated are two very different things. In sport...either you are good or you aren't. The results will tell the tale. This president shows the deep tendency to hide, mislead, and force things down the peoples throat. Things that would never have had the popular support to get him elected if we would have had more details about what "hope and change" really meant. Like Mussolini, Stalin and Hitler....he was elected by, and is governing by cult of personality, not by popular mandate. He doesn't care though, because he sees himself as our ruler, not as a leader of the people who grant him his power. He feels no need to answer to us. I don't remember a president in my lifetime that was so inclined to insist on HIS way, even if it is obvious the majority don't want it his way. He doesn't care a whit. He figures HE knows whats best.

Right. I guess I was over-simplifying because to me, you can't get to that point of "I know what's best for others" without some serious confidence. You make an interesting point about politics vs. sport and the ability to determine just how good you are. O. rode a pretty big wave of support into the White House. For a politician, achieving the highest office in the land has to be akin to winning the U.S. Open, or the Indy 500, or something like that. Whether or not he ever articulated any messages would be irrelevant. To me that's like Nancy Pelosi stating that we needed to pass the health care bill in order to find out what's in the health care bill. That's some serious self-confidence that she's right, and dammit don't question me just do it I don't have time to be questioned by inferior talents.

There is no such thing as a neutral source. I was not quoting statistics. I simply read an article that was a take on the President that I have seen written about many times before in varying forms. I happened to agree with that view of the "chosen one" now that I have had 4 years to observe and learn about him. He thinks he is a genius, he is certain he is never wrong, he will obfuscate, take license, misdirect, and out right lie as if he believes he is creating the truth simply with his utterance of the words. My point is not based in any one article, the president's narcissism has been discussed by mainstream conservative guys like Will, Krauthammer, Sowell and all over the political blogosphere for along time now.

The article was by some guy named David Kupelian. It is an opinion piece. This thread was meant to be about opinions of BHO's psychopathy. I googled is Obama a narcissist or sociopath. The article came up. I read it and agreed with much of it. Since it wasn't really a statistical or historical premise, I neglected to source the few paragraphs I posted. How about this one. You know Dr. Krauthammer and National Review right?

"Americans are beginning to notice Obama’s elevated opinion of himself. There’s nothing new about narcissism in politics. Every senator looks in the mirror and sees a president. Nonetheless, has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?"

Who Does Obama Think He Is?

Charles Krauthammer writes on NRO: Barack Obama wants to speak at the Brandenburg Gate. He figures it would be a nice backdrop. The supporting cast — a cheering audience and a few fainting frauleins — would be a picturesque way to bolster his foreign-policy credentials. What Obama does not seem to understand is that the Brandenburg . . .

No. Not at all....he is going down. The funny thing is it will be to another establishment vanilla Republican candidate. Romney wins as the "anybody but BHO" candidate. The far left thought this was the end game. He was the handpicked Manchurian candidate because the silver ponytails thought the people were ready for revolution from within. They miscalculated. His attack ads reek of desperation. He has no record to run on. Hope and change fooled us once. They know it won't work again...we have seen his idea of what that means. So now it's just "fairness" and "forward" and class envy. Didn't define hope or change...now won't define fairness or forward... to what? Americans may be gullible...but not that gullible.

  • Stupid thread. My wife has worked on psychiatric wards, and she says that until you do, the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, now in its fourth edition) is just words on a page. You read half the diagnoses in there, and they sound like any number of people. Then you work in a psychiatric word, and you have an "ah ha" moment. You see that the words/definitions actually signify. They're not just little inkblots you can project on.

Having said that, there are only a few politicians who strike me as worthy of diagnosis. Many are extremely narcissistic. For example, people love to point to Newt Gingrich as someone who supposedly has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and that makes a certain amount of sense, since he is given to making statements like "People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz," but for my money he's more just a bloated, self-important asshole than someone with a genuine personality disorder (I might be wrong).

For that matter, to the degree that many--most?--Republicans believe that virtually anyone suffering any misfortune has brought it on themselves (their perverse application of "personal responsibility"), lack of empathy is almost a prerequisite for membership in the GOP.

Nonetheless, only a few politicians seem demonstrably off. Sorry, GOPers, Obama ain't one of them.

The two politicians that strike me as being odd almost to the point of nuttiness (and I don't pretend to be able to diagnose exactly what is wrong with them) are Michelle Bachmann and Allen West. As for Democrats, it's possible that Clinton had something cooking there with his sexual behavior. It went beyond Monica Lewinski, you know.

I wonder if that's still true re Krauthammer. I used to disagree with him but thought he was intelligent, etc. Of course, that's when Bush was in office. Since Bush left office, he's struck me more as a professional propagandist than anything else. Is this because he's now a member of the "out" party, or is it because that party has continued to move to the right? Can't say. At any rate, since I don't work in an office anymore where I'm among people who share opinions about people like him, I don't know if that feeling is widely shared. I'd be surprised if it weren't.

The absurdity of this charge should make you blush. Go to any right-wing website and you'll find long threads of posters decrying the terrible change for the worse that Obama has wrought. Now you say that when he claims to have made big changes, he's kidding himself to the point of grandiosity.

Take Obamarcare, for example. To hear righties tell it, it's a hair-raising detour down the road to serfdom. I'm shuddering ... and I'm thinking that such a horrifying turn for the worse must rate at least a blip on the "historic" meter.
