I'm not saying it's healthy but there has to be a certain level of arrogance (a massively high level in fact) in any person to even consider running for President. Just think about the premise itself. You have to believe that you alone are the most capable person of leading a country of 300 million people from all walks of life. Whether that level translates to narcissism is an entirely different debate. However I will say this. Every party nominee from the past 100 years regardless of party (and I'm including 3rd party ones) has been extremely arrogant. Anyone who has sought the nomination from either of the major parties in the past 150 years has been extremely arrogant. This personality features transcends party lines. I'm willing to bet that Krauthammer never said those things about Bush though.

I think "most" (never say "all") high achievers have a high degree of self confidence. And as Sprtnbrn said, "whether that level translates to narcissism is an entirely different debate."
I've been doing a lot of studying on the topic of mental preparation for athletes as of late. Those at the highest levels of their sport often believe they are one of the best, if not THE best at what they do. They have supreme confidence in their skills and abilities. I don't think it's a stretch to say that similar attitudes would apply to a situation like a governor or president.

Confidence is just one hallmark of sociopathy or narcissism. Habitual lying and manipulation, along with an inability to see your own flaws or faults that are more pathological.
"For a super-ambitious and vainglorious person such as Obama, lying is a vital and creative power. Lies open doors that would otherwise remain shut. Thus in a very real sense, for Obama, lies are “magic words,” the invocation of which represents the exercise of real power – power to impress voters, raise money, demonize critics, win elections, pass legislation and transform a nation. Ordinary people don’t possess this power, as they are constrained from such brazen lying by their conscience and/or the fear of being caught. But a highly narcissistic person like Obama feels he has the freedom – indeed, the mandate – to reshape America by creatively speaking into existence his preferred version of reality, without regard for any higher standard of truth. In other words, to lie."
Performing a sport and trying to manipulate an entire nation into a "fundamental transformation" that he never really articulated are two very different things. In sport...either you are good or you aren't. The results will tell the tale. This president shows the deep tendency to hide, mislead, and force things down the peoples throat. Things that would never have had the popular support to get him elected if we would have had more details about what "hope and change" really meant. Like Mussolini, Stalin and Hitler....he was elected by, and is governing by cult of personality, not by popular mandate. He doesn't care though, because he sees himself as our ruler, not as a leader of the people who grant him his power. He feels no need to answer to us. I don't remember a president in my lifetime that was so inclined to insist on HIS way, even if it is obvious the majority don't want it his way. He doesn't care a whit. He figures HE knows whats best.

There is no such thing as a neutral source. I was not quoting statistics. I simply read an article that was a take on the President that I have seen written about many times before in varying forms. I happened to agree with that view of the "chosen one" now that I have had 4 years to observe and learn about him. He thinks he is a genius, he is certain he is never wrong, he will obfuscate, take license, misdirect, and out right lie as if he believes he is creating the truth simply with his utterance of the words. My point is not based in any one article, the president's narcissism has been discussed by mainstream conservative guys like Will, Krauthammer, Sowell and all over the political blogosphere for along time now.

The article was by some guy named David Kupelian. It is an opinion piece. This thread was meant to be about opinions of BHO's psychopathy. I googled is Obama a narcissist or sociopath. The article came up. I read it and agreed with much of it. Since it wasn't really a statistical or historical premise, I neglected to source the few paragraphs I posted. How about this one. You know Dr. Krauthammer and National Review right?
"Americans are beginning to notice Obama’s elevated opinion of himself. There’s nothing new about narcissism in politics. Every senator looks in the mirror and sees a president. Nonetheless, has there ever been a presidential nominee with a wider gap between his estimation of himself and the sum total of his lifetime achievements?"

Krauthammer is respected by his peers as very thoughtful, reserved, and professional. Who would you put forward as a "neutral" and unbiased journalist? I submit no such thing exists.

Ooooo. You use such big words pumpkin. You know he is a tool. A pseudo intellectual blank slate. His handlers have nurtured his narcissistic self delusion to it's peak. He is now on a downward trajectory...no longer projecting hope and change...now it's just desperate bitter class warfare and divisive group politics in a hope to hang on for a second term.
