The program As grown from 800 million to over 2 billion since 2008. 41% don't meet eligibility requirements.
More Obama success. Wonder if I can get a free phone?
Well I would like a new car. There has to be an Obama program to get one for free. It's my right to have a phone and a car.
I am shocked this program was not ran efficiently. Really.
The program is paid for by the telecom companies themselves. They've evidently made a business decision to "hook" as many potential paying future customers as possible, believing that many currently unemployed w/b employed as the economy mends. They charge the existing paying base for their fishing expedition. It appears the funding incentive structure needs tweaking.
Before making stupid replies, research the history of negotiations between the fed gov and the telecom industry.
the price of votes. Get ready for all the free shit to go away.
I am glad the election is over.

Here's a quiz for you mr fish....which president was in office when the federal government approved using universal service funds to help folks living below the poverty line with their cell phone bills?
Answer: who ever did it was wrong, R or D.
You mean paid by taxes customers pay to telecom that then are passed to the fed govt. taxes that shouldn't be used on a wasted program where 6 million people who didn't provide any proof of need get free phones.

Everyone who has a phone pays a tax.
Question authority. Power to the people
"Before making stupid replies, research the history of negotiations between the fed gov and the telecom industry."
- Jack Greer -
"Who Pays for the Lifeline Program?
All telecommunications service providers and certain other providers of telecommunications must contribute to the federal USF based on a percentage of their end-user telecommunications revenues. These companies include wireline telephone companies, wireless telephone companies, and certain Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers.
Some consumers may notice a “Universal Service” line item on their telephone bills. This line item appears when a company chooses to recover its USF contributions directly from its customers by billing them this charge. The FCC does not require this charge to be passed on to customers. Each company makes a business decision about whether and how to assess charges to recover its Universal Service costs. "
- FCC -
First, they should be required to provide proof. Second, there is no federally mandated customer tax. Third, the incentive structure s/b changed to curtail telecom from gaming the agreement with the fed gov. And fourth, why do you call them Obama phones when phone communications for the poor was authorized during the Reagan admin w/ updated tech in the form of cell phones authorized under W?
Perhaps we should call them something other than "Obama phones"
Why ? Obama has nearly quadrupled the program since he got in office. Added 1.4 billion a year to it. I think those qualify as Obama phones. 6 million people who don't actually qualify got them.
Ie. fed fees are passed on to consumers ..another form of tax
Typically we hold folks who created a process or initiative responsible for the results of that process or initiative.
I find it facinating that despite the fact that the guy didn't start the program, and his administration has tightened up the requirements around the program, conservatives are willing to ignore these facts and claim this as an example of "giving away free shit" for votes.
Hell conservatives on this board claim it was Obama who bailed out the banks and bailed out the automotive industries...even though the votes happened before he took office.
So. using your logic. We can only hold the president who created something like taxes responsible for tax increases today? Or the first president who ran a debt for what Obama has done in the last 4 years by adding 6 trillion in debt. He didn't start these things after all. Sorry..I'm not buying that BS. Obama has increased every giveaway program we have and ran up irresponsible debt in the process. He gets all the credit for increasing the free phone program by 1.4 billion a year and giving 6 million people who can afford phone added to free phone program that the govt pays for and wastes billions.

poor lars is just pissed off because he didn't get his piece of it.
Of course lars still can't comprehend why we electrified the US in the the Great Depression.
Here's the deal lars, pay phones are no more. Its a new cell phone age. ATT/Verizon don't want to support copper.
So where do I apply for my free Obama phone? I am sure you got yours already.
Which thing did I say that was partially true?
Landlines require miles and miles and miles of CU wire running to every telephone in use.
Longer distances have been microwave transmission for years. Microwaves are radio signals which travel through space from satillite to ground stations...no CU wire.
Cell towers also use radio signals...distributed digital time multiplexed broadband. Other than the power lines there is little CU wire involved in the cell technology.
The maintance of CU wires running along all the post roads in the US are very expensive compared to the maintance of cell towers. By switching to cell phones and handing them out the phone companies are saving money. Being allowed to charge their customer base as a seperate line item is a bonus for the ones run by right wing wackos...anything to whip up the uninformed...

Lurking on tRCMB since 1996
It's amusing how you constantly lie about this program. Obama didn't create it, your hero ronnie the raygun did. But then the truth has never been important to you and your connie friends.
Used to go places where there were no phones.
Didn't miss them at all.
Oh I get it, by giving away phones, when some people go out and strip the wires, it's all good!
Anything to pander to the "electorate".
In the 48 states it use to be pretty hard to go to a house where there were no phones...at least no phone service available if it was wanted...
Yep, ronnie the raygun pandering to the electorate was indeed a bad thing for 'merika.
Good thing we have change we can believe in.
Obama is responsible for Reaganphones, but he isn't responsible for killing bin Laden - Conservatives will go to great lengths to avoid reality.
