A great phrase uttered years ago says:
"If you are not Conservative as an old person, you have no brain, and if you are not a Liberal as a young person, you have no heart"
This is the natural course of things, by and large. I enjoy hanging and talking with younger people (hey, this is a board largely filled with MSU students, isn't it?) because they have the energy and hope of a bright future ahead of them. Older people get stale and jaded and have a lot of worries in their lives (me included).
But as one gets older, it is really really easy to see the changes in the world. I'll tell you younger people here-there have been HUGE changes in the world over the last 40 years and it is a much "easier" place to be, by and large. That is a good thing.
But when I speak of the "lack of reward for ingenuity and hard work" now in this country..it is because it is largely true that over time, every one of us has gotten the benefit of an easier, more connected, more technologically advanced planet. We are all very lucky to be in this country. But I have raised kids and I have seen how much "easier" physically especially, things are now. That is not all good, though.
There is alot of good that comes when a kid has seen the value of good old fashioned SWEAT. This is why I admire out football and basketball athletes, by and large. I know what it takes to be in that kind of physical condition. A lot of us will never touch that sort of work in our lives. The ethic that comes out of this daily hard work is a great thing for a person's future.
I've seen how compartmentalized students are with their educations and their work skills these days, compared to how it was years ago. Now we hire people to do such mundane things as changing our oil to mowing our lawns.
There are consequences. The changes are fascinating, really, but to us older people, we can't help but worry. We worry for our kids and Grand Kids. Because we know that there are "jobs" and then there are careers. Careers are built from what you'll gain from an education at MSU, for example. Especially from an advanced degree.. The problem goes even further, though, when educational institutions are spending more and more time trying to just get students "jobs", rather than being able to promote ingenuity and innovation.
These "for profit" Universities and Colleges are largely built to do nothing more than churn out degrees for people that just want "jobs" now. A quick fix that doesn't create minds that are full of ingenuity.
I might have gotten off track here
There is romance in all of us
Everything was great in the 50s?
Well, unless you happened to be a woman or a minority. Great times.
Anyone. Anyplace. Anytime.
Oh man, that hallway thing was absurd. You could practically feel her thinking "oh my god, just talk about things. Anything. Just keep saying things to make this less uncomfortable."
I definitely enjoy the bump in monthly income when my wife hits her FICA cap but in reality we don't need that few hundred extra dollars per month. If it were as simple as eliminating the cap to fix the long term problem I don't see how anyone could be against it.
Oh and WELLS!
Yeah, I was just framing the fact that many conservatives seem to want a country that existed in the 1950's today, but without any of the costs. When the US was the most powerful country militarily and economically it was because we paid for it in taxes. Now we have sacrificed the economy so that more wealth can be concentrated to the wealthy all while maintaining a huge military. Romney wanted to double down on this trend as the Bushes and Reagan did, and I'm amazed that so many fiscal conservatives continue to buy that it will work.
I am afraid that the whole world is closer to moral foreclosure.
The GDP ratio will automatically drop below this ratio on 1-1-13 if no debt deal is reached. The Bush tax cuts expire and sequestration govt spending cuts begin on this date. This is the so-called "fiscal cliff."
It really is that simple.
Sorry, sarcasm doesn't work on the internet. The important part of that post was the 90% tax rates that conservatives like to ignore.
The ideological rationale for opposing this change is that $110,000 is the level above which you don't accrue any further benefits from Social Security. We like to have this fantasy that your Social Security contributions go to some account and then you get paid back later when, of course, that's not the way the system works at all. It always has been a pay-as-you-go system with current workers paying current retirees.
Sorry man, my bad.
I think you're confused about how pendulums work.
"i choose not to argue politics on the interwebs." abraham lincoln
No, no its not. Stop believing all the class warfare rhetoric the liberals cram down your throat. Think for yourself for once, will ya?
Problem is we "know" what social things are fair, etc. now, but they all come with a cost.
China's economic machine is great, until you look at the rights (or lack) of their people.
EVERYTHING has a cost. This is why over the years most cultures go from dictatorships (which work great, leaders and rulers are rich, the peasants get the work done, everything is in order) to controlled democracies , complete with corruption and more chaos, to Socialism where there are fewer rich and fewer starving people..
Sweden is the best example I can think of that has their shit together. They have very few "rich" people, though and no hungry people to speak of. They also have no initiative to have any fun, either. Drinks out a a bar cost about 10 bucks. They all stay home, have simple boring lives, and they live in harmony. It's strange. But their roads are beautiful and they have healthcare for all!
We are trying to have an Utopia in the USA and it's result will be bankrupcy..I don't know the answer
I think you're the confused one brah. What didn't you get? Good God man.
This sounds like the definition of a libertarian.
I've worked for years selling to the city of Chicago. The graft and corruption is RAMPANT. Yet this machine feeds itself and can't be brought down because the citizens think that it's just normal.
Chicagoans are numb to the incremental weight of increased taxation and government intrusion to support the weight of the massive Chicago machine.
No, it really is a simple matter of arthmetic. It has nothing to do with "class warfare rhetoric." If anything SS is a regressive tax, those who make less pay more FICA as a percentage of their wages.
good old honest Abe, always able to put things in perspective.
I must be crazy to be in a loony bin like this.
Glenn Beck was very somber today on his radio show.
Yesterday he was cracking up and taking calls from listeners who claimed republicans were showing up in vast numbers to vote in Ohio, VA, FL and PA.
Him and his cronies were very disrespectful towards Obama and very confident President Romney would win.
None of them were there to eat crow this morning.
Quone, to quone something. Like a patient gets difficult you quone them.
Again....You are on a board dedicated to a publicly funded, land grant institution. I'm not sure your rants against "socialism" are being made from a place of purity.
I wouldn't be pointing to Daily Show viewers as stupid as per this survey they are some of the most informed people on politics and world affairs in the country.

A Spartan Today, A SPARTAN FOREVER. Through thick and thin, low and high water I strive to be the best Spartan ever.
This is absolute crap. Republicans are angry because they work hard and are seeing someone ask them to pay a tax rate that they paid 12 years ago? While the rest of us unemployed, liberal bums nary lift a finger or have no job of consequence? Seriously, fuck off. What an awful myth you believe. News flash, true capitalism died when we stopped employing 10 year olds in coal mines for a dime a day. This nation has, and will continue to have, socialist leanings. When was the last time you paid a cop for his services? Or a toll on every surface street? Deal with it.
Conservatives always like to ignore facts that don't fit their religion or ideology!
